Yes, check out this book called "The Easyway to Stop Smoking" By Allen Carr. It basically dispels the illusion that smokers enjoy smoking, that smoking relives stress, and a host of other illusions that people have been brainwashed into by the tobacco companies. I checked it out at the library and I don't even smoke but I read most of it but 2 chapters and it is highly enlightening.

Those books are funny actually. And guys not smoking talking about brain washing and how to quit somking lol. Smoking does relieve stress, "tickles" the brain in a good way, makes you more calm. Also nicotine IS a drug. And as any drug, when you use it you develop dependency.
I managed to quit because I wanted to do it and just decided that "if others can, am I weaker? wtf". It wasn't easy, and the first 2 weeks are a pain (with peaks around 3-5th days). No, not because of the brain washing tobacco companies did on me. You just PHYSICALLY feel a lot of stuff. You find yourself getting nervous about almost anything. You can't sit down for 1 seconds. You go through a lot of anxiety periods. But with strong will you can do it.

Smoking does not relieve stress, it causes stress. How does smoke going into your lungs relieve stress? It does not. You are suffocating yourself when you smoke, is suffocation not stressful? Isn't it stressful that your muscles and organs can't get the air that they need? I don't know about you but I wouldn't feel too calm if I am suffocating. Smoking is a drug addiction, not a genuine crutch. It does not help anyone but in fact destroys lives.

You are aware that nicotine is pychoactive though, right? With psychoactive substances all kinds of shit can happen. What you should be feeling and what your brain makes you feel are not always the same

I am not saying your brain is telling you to stop smoking, I am telling you your body is telling you to stop smoking. The thing is people have been fooled into thinking that they are actually missing something if they don't smoke. Others think that the brainwashing that tobacco companies use isn't working. If the brainwashing didn't work then people wouldn't smoke. If someone remembers their first cigarette, is it enjoyable? Most people probably coughed and had to "train" themselves to believe they enjoyed it. People need to remember nicotine is filling the hole which it itself has created. People actually believe that non-smokers are having a harder time dealing with stress and that they have an easier time because they smoke.

I'd like to point out a few things.

1. You came to the tobacco smoking thread to rail against tobacco. This makes very little sense.
2. You keep bumping a thread which discusses the joys of smoking, of which you disapprove. This all but guarantees more views, and again, makes almost no sense.
3. You're here to impart your unwanted wisdom upon us. You gained this wisdom after never having smoked tobacco, and after reading "most" of one book by one guy. This isn't much information on which to base an opinion, and it certainly isn't enough cause to come to a thread of smokers to tell us we've been brainwashed.
4. The TL quit smoking team is over there. Perhaps they would be more interested in what you have to say.

There was no need point all that out, I am well aware of what I am posting and where I am posting it. I already posted in the thread you directed me to previously. If you look back this all started with me recommending the book to someone who wanted to stop smoking and he just happened to post this in this thread. Second off I directed them to the book because one of my friends quit smoking right after reading the book. Do i need to have an experience of misery to know that I don't want anything to do with it? I mean really? I need to smoke to see how miserable smokers are?

I personally don't care who Allen Carr is or what he does, smoking relieves stress. Maybe not in a direct head clearing way marijuana does, but when you smoke you can usually see and start chatting with other smokers which distracts you from your stress and thus relieving you of it. Also if you are smoking after an extended break or starting you feel a very strong headrush which relieves stress headaches.

Who are you trying to convince you or me?

But there is nothing good about smoking, all it is is an addictive drug that keeps you coming back, because it makes you feel good.

That's why I dont like the idea of this thread, and I dont like that TL.net allows it. Bur obv. they cant just close it, because then they would have to close both the alcohold threads and the high thread, which would be pretty bad.

But let me ask everybody here.

Who here is actually glad that they started smoking?

I am.

Look, I'm not suggesting children should be allowed to smoke, or even that I'd recommend for adults. It's a personal choice that calm, rational, intelligent people can make. I made my decision, and I'm glad I picked up my first cigar, pipe, hookah, and yes, even cigarette.

It's not popular to say, but it's true. There are plenty of posts in this thread which suggest I am not alone.

We know it's bad for us. Don't think for a minute that we don't. We knew before we even thought about starting (except perhaps those who got started as children, which should never be allowed to happen). I've been a casual smoker for years, mostly socially, but sometimes alone. Even at the rate I smoke (which is relatively low), I know there's a reasonable chance it will kill me. For me, as a rational adult, it's worth it.

You only smoke when you're with people, and not everyday? Then I hope you wont become a real smoker someday, but when you do, you will regret it.

Anyway I'm not talking about party smokers, but people who smoke every day (the real smokers), and not just some wannabe's who want to tell me there oppinion of smoking, when they arent actually smokers...

And just for the rekord, most poeple who starts smoking late are people who were party smokers to begin with.

I have a fairly nice pipe which I bought in Italy, and I had a great time learning to smoke it and such but I think I've got a problem now because now that I'm back I just don't have as many oppurtunities to smoke - it's just not something I can 'fit in' like I could when I was travelling.

But I don't mind smoking less, the main problem is that my tobacco completely dries out before I can get any decent use out of it. Also, I've had to experiment once again with different tobaccos, which is annoying because there are many I don't like.

anyway, I was wondering since I am pretty much self taught; are there any protips that somebody can lend me which might for example increase the life of my tobacco? also, is there anyone from melbourne (australia) who can point me to a good pipe place? (tobacco, accessories etc)

pipes are the best ^_^ coffee makes me a better person, and pipes make me a more relaxed one

I have plenty of friends and work with plenty of people who are pack-a-day or more smokers. Some regret it, some don't. There are plenty of posts in this thread from people you call "real smokers" who don't appear to regret it, and plenty who do.

There's always the risk of real addiction. I average smoking a few times a week. I've been smoking at about this pace for probably 6 years, but I know there's a risk it will become more. I know I don't necessarily have control over that. I'm completely ok with it.

You need to realize that even with all the serious health risks, including an almost 100% chance of early death for regular smokers, and the chance that any time I smoke I increase the chance that I'll become dependent, it can still be worth it.

Look at it like a basic cost-benefit analysis. It's the same thing you do every time you get in the car to drive, every time you have a drink (if you drink), and every time you go skiing/skydiving/etc. The cost here is a chance of addiction and early death. The benefit is the joy of smoking. I've made the calculation, and for me, it's worth it.

Again, I'm not recommending it. I've made my decision, and everyone else can do the same.

If you have a humidor or any air tight jar (even ziplock bags are ok, if you're not storing it really long term and your use more than one), you can get a pretty cheap humidification system that will maintain proper moisture. Most decent tobacco shops sell gels, crystals, or little foam blocks (that you soak in solution) that can maintain humidity. Here are some.

While they aren't particularly expensive ($5-$10, unless you really go all out), it's not necessarily worth it for pipe tobacco. That is, these are designed to keep humidors full of cigars, which can very easily reach hundreds of dollars in value, at the proper humidity for a very long time. If you're only trying to maintain a small amount of pipe tobacco for a month or two, you probably don't need anything like this. Simply keeping your tobacco in a sealed container can help. You can put a shot glass of water inside if you're still having problems (careful not to spill). Some people recommend adding a slice of apple or other fruit to a tin or bag of tobacco (preferably an aromatic), though I've heard some people claim it makes the tobacco smoke differently. I've never tried it myself.

The key is to keep your tobacco humidified, not to rehumidify dry tobacco. I mean, feel free to rehumidify it if it's already dry, but this can damage the flavor, and is not ideal.

Been smoking for close to six years now. Started at fifteen/sixteen because... hell I can't remember why. First smoke was a Red. Loved it. Smoked another the next day. Bought a pack couple of days later, never really looked back all that much. Its just a thing that I do. Sure I regret it sometimes, but the fact is: the only thing keeping me from stopping is the simple joy of having a smoke.

A lot of assumptions in this thread. Does smoking make me happy? What kind of question is that? Yes and no. I am happy when I taste the smoke and feel the burn of it in my throat. I'm not so happy when I'm gasping on a run. Should I quit? Probably. Do I care? Not really. There are a million and a half things that people do every single day that are more unhealthy, and frankly, more disgusting; I don't see why smokers have to be the ones preached to and acted like we're six years old with our hands in a cookie jar.

Fact is, I as a stupid kid when I started smoking. Did a whole bunch of other stupid stuff. But as it stands, I'm an adult who is fully aware of the decision that he is making and is fully aware of the harmful nature of the product. Tobacco companies aren't brainwashing anyone. You know who funds those anti-tobacco commercials? Tobacco companies. Seriously, there are plenty of crusades that will yield much greater results.

That being said; the concern is inevitable and appreciated; however misplaced. If you don't like smoking, don't smoke. Don't assume you know anything about it, though. It ain't food and water, and it ain't comparable to any other drug. It's what it is and that's it. And now, I will have a final smoke before I sleep. Goodnight.

I recently quit smoking about one year ago, give or take a few weeks. Anyway, I have tried a large selection of cigarettes but I had two favorites that stuck for a long while. Camel Turkish Royal is an amazing full flavored cigarette. Peace lights the BEST smoke I have ever had, it is a Japanese blend and it was a joy to smell and smoke.

I have a question. How much does a pack of cigarettes usually cost in the US? This is coming from a scandinavian, where it's freaking expensive, and everybody just (have to) buy(s) the cheapest ones.

How expensive it is in Denmark then? In Finland, most of the packs cost from four to five euros. I've heard NY is really expensive place for a smoker..

~$9 per pack, depending on what you get. The cheaper stuff like Winston and Next go for ~6, and imports such as Benson and Hedges go for double that price.

If you buy by the carton it's usually a lot cheaper especially from discount e-tailers, usually $~30-50 for 10 packs (200).

It made me quit, in a heartbeat.

I think people who smoke absolutely NEEDS to make peace with cancer, before they even start.

I don't want to be a negative downer either, but something like 1/4 (or was it 1/3?) of ALL people develop cancer at some point in their lives, and put decades of radiation and tar into your body probably doesn't help your chances.

So why do I still smoke? Because I made my peace with dying from suicide, the day that I start suffering horribly from smoking would be the day that I put a bullet through my brain. I figured with my good diet and exercise regime I most likely won't have seriously debilitating consequences from moderate smoking until I'm past my middle ages, I'm happy with living to just 50, that's just about enough time to outlive my parents and since I won't have any kids either, it's not like I would be missed. Less personal suffering, less burden on the overloaded healthcare system, and a happier life before death. Win, win, win and win.

I love these ones. Besides them, I smoked almost every kind of tobacco. Cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, hookahs, handmade ones...

Thanks. The cigar part was very, very interesting! I'm defo gonna check out some of the brands you mentioned because I really like to smoke after eating, and I hear that smoking a cigar after food is amazing.

For the record I smoke marlboro silvers.

Karelias personally tastes better but it's much more expensive here (per gram), while Bali Shag Yellow is the perfect bang for your buck, at least for my taste. I also sometimes smoke Bali Shag White, but that's "halfzware" (half-dark tobacco) and I always prefer brighter, Virginia-like tobaccos.

Even though in winter I often buy regular ciggies (I'm too lazy to roll at home and smoking at college breaks and waiting at bus and tram stops can be pretty hard if your hands turn to fucking ice everytime you go rolling one). The only cigarette I would say I actually fully enjoy smoking are red Lucky Strikes - these things are fucking delicious.

Normally, I prefer roll-your-own by FAR, as it's cheaper and tastes a gajillion times better. I would say I smoke cigs primarily cause I need a junkie fix and I smoke tobacco cause it tastes great to me (AND cause I need a fix, ofc ).
I don't like flavored bullshit like Vanilla Choice or Black Devil black tobacco (Black Devil white tobacco is actually pretty cool, although it can sometimes taste a bit sour) cause the artificial perfumed taste sticks in my mouth and makes me sick - it's okay to smoke like 1 in 10 flavored for variety, but if I smoke them constantly, I feel like throwing up.
I also prefer rolling my spliffs with rolling tobacco, easier to roll with, burns slower cause it's moist AND gives a much smoother smoke, but most of my friends don't agree with me so w/e.

For everyone hating on smoking: How is it less disgusting than any of your other habits like eating without washing your hands, sleeping on a bedpillow that hasn't been washed in 24 hours, or standing within 5 meters of an operating motor vehicle (heavy CO emissions) ?

The truth is, anything is moderation can be helpfull to your lifestyle. If you smoke a pack a day, you WILL get sick. If you smoke 4 cigs a week when you go out to drink friday nights, you won't.

Same goes for alcohol, marijuana, fast food, bacon, whatever. If you work out 7 days a week you will hurt yourself too!

I like to roll my own for two reasons: They handle so much better (burn longer, taste so much more humid and soft) and plus it looks classy as fuck when I bust out my pack of Drum and roll one up while chatting up a girl or whatever (what I'm saying here is rolling looks cool, not necessarily the actual smoking!).

And what do I get out of it? First of all it's relaxing as hell. You know that feeling of meditation where you slow your heartbeat and limit your oxygen intake? Yeah, that happens. How about the pleasure of getting fresh air and walking around outside? The natural relaxation you get from putting something in your mouth? (oral fixations are natural for anyone who enjoys eating, kissing etc) And of course, the excuse to set aside 5 minutes of my over-stimulated time.

Of course, if you abuse smoking, you can forget about all that. This is where nicotine (An alkaloid, very similar to caffeine) is the deciding factor in your brain chemistry.

The following is standard issue for pretty much any night:

I have a question. How much does a pack of cigarettes usually cost in the US? This is coming from a scandinavian, where it's freaking expensive, and everybody just (have to) buy(s) the cheapest ones.

Where I live a pack of Marlboro 100's or Newport Reds will go for between $5 and $6 depending on that specific store.
As long as people believe in absurdities they will continue to commit atrocities.
