Marlboro 27s are what I always buy, and those are about $5:40 with tax here, and about 50% of the time have a $1 off logo on them, making them like $4:35. I don't know how the prices are anymore on Ft. Sill, as I don't go there much anymore, but they are even cheaper there.
It breaks my heart knowing that my NY family is paying like $10/pack for 27s = '[
EDIT: I think you can go on Oklahoma Native American reservations to buy smokes for even cheaper (like $30-35/carton, IIRC,) though I have never done so myself. Every story I have heard about buying cigs from reservations have come from scumbags (but hey, if I don't act like their friend, someone else is going to and smoke their weed for them.)

yeah i'm in texas and those prices sound pretty similar to what i see, but i'm pretty much only interested in american spirits

Let's not forget that shisha smoke is very different from tobacco smoke. Most of the white smoke cloud is glycerin burning, which is used to treat sore throats or for hand creams. This is why the smoke is so soft and doesn't smell like a cigarette.
American spirit is nice, it's like taking some drum rolling tobacco and boiling it five or six times.
And for anyone who enjoys 100s:
You might really enjoy rolling your own cigarettes. A tightly rolled cig burns longer, makes less smoke, tastes much nicer (as the tobacco is more humid, has more flavour) and makes you enjoy it so much more by taking away the instant gratification factor.

I finally used omni's guide and fulfilled my pipe destiny:
+ Show Spoiler +
Spent $64 in total, on the pipe, tool, and a couple blends. One of which is a sweeter fruity blend and the other is a mild-ish english blend.

Seriously though, it sounds like you're off to a solid start. You'll be amazed how affordable it is to keep your tobacco stocked.

Yeah. I think I am doing okay so far, finding moments where it's tasting really good (in between it being too hot and going completely out, of course)
As far as cost effectiveness goes, I am more concerned about running out of matches than running out of tobacco

Is there a better way to burn the tobacco? Something similar to how you light a fancy cigar (with a piece of cedar wood)? Or maybe with a hot coal (like with a shisha) ?

In NC if you go to a major store(read not a local store) you can get almost every brand besides Marlboro Reds for like 3.50 or so a pack. Red's are like 5$ a pack no matter where you go though

Something similar to how you light a fancy cigar (with a piece of cedar wood)? Or maybe with a hot coal (like with a shisha) ? It's really all about practice. You should be able to light any pipe once and then smoke it to the bottom. There's absolutely no shame in relighting, but once you've got the hand of it you should only need to light once or twice a bowl. There are a few keys to watch for.
How tight is the pack? This is where you have the most control. Pack too loosely and the tobacco will burn itself out. Pack too tightly and the tobacco doesn't get enough air to keep an ember going. How moist is the tobacco. This one is pretty obvious. Dry tobacco burns too quickly, wet tobacco not at all.
But seriously, it just takes practice. Don't bother trying anything fancy to light your pipe and please don't put a coal anywhere near it.

Been smoking hookah for about a year now, feels good man.
I don't get withdrawl symptoms and I don't crave it. It's really nice to smoke on a cool summer night while watching a good show (gets you very buzzed). Fairly smooth until the coal starts charring the tobacco.

how did you guys get into smoking?
not condeming you, just curious because i've heard people who were 13, or people who started at parties. always wondered about that type of stuff

Whenever I drink i feel like I have to smoke. and eventually it became a habit

i would usually accept a cig whenever a friend offered me one, but at that point i wasn't addicted or anything. i became addicted when i picked up smoking cigs in order to cover the smell of weed
also it may have had something to do with being pretty close to homeless and having to walk everywhere

Had a first "try" at 10 (cigar from a friend of my brother), was terrible. Tried again when i was 12 when a friend stole some cigarettes from his mother, meh. Really started at 14/15, came along with the whole beer/weed/party thing ^__^
I roll myself now, only tobacco without additives.

I used to be really anti-smoking, but one day I tried one, enjoyed it, and smoked 1 daily. I didn't start my heavy smoking until I met a group of friends that were 'full-time smokers'. Dunno why I tried it, but I only regret the money I've spent on the habit, which is strange, because I used to HATE smoking with a passion.

Same with me. Though, i can live without cigarettes most of the time, but when i'm drinking i got to smoke some.

i started smoking at the age of 16, together with drinking. started with getting cigs from friends at the weekend to buying a pack for the weekend to smoking leftovers on sunday/monday to smoking a pack per day, 2 on saturdays.
i after 12 years, i once again stopped last sunday. i still love smoking i think, but atm i can't afford it and i want to put my money to "better" use in the future. today will be my first evening with alcohol and no cigs, it will be very funny ^^
