I recently read about this and was a little surprised. The American K-12 system essentially teaches that Galileo was a quirky good guy fighting for truth against the evil Catholic Church trying to suppress his ideas.
The truth of Galileo's trial is actually very different. He was, at least when he was younger, actually friends with the pope (later in life he wrote a book in which he called the pope a simpleton, which was what got the ball rolling on the whole heresy trial to begin with) and there was a lot of politics involved in his trial, in particular that many people wanted to discredit Galileo either because of Galileo's criticism of their own work -- Galileo was sort of an intellectual bully of his time, and not always right either -- or to get at Galileo's patrons, the Medici family. Fellow "natural philosophers" -- as scientists were called back then -- testified against Galileo. But even after confessing to heresy, he lived the rest of his life -- and he was already quite old, in his 70's -- in a very cozy house arrest.
I forget where I heard this but was he not friends with the pope before the man became the pope? Not that it really makes a difference.
From what I recall. He wasn't friends with the pope, but underlined the idea that neither he nor the church were wrong, but rather the bible was being misinterpreted and thus why the question heresy was completely irrelevant, because they were not clashing ideas whatsoever.
Don't get me started on the mother of the Medici family.

Pretty sure unconditional surrender from Germany and Japan made the world a far better place.
Sorry all you die hard American patriots, but gongryong has a point. There is plenty of evidence out there supporting the claim that the lunar landing of 1969 was a hoax. Also, something that might be of interest is the TV Quiz show "QI". It goes about debunking myths such as Michael Jackson being the creator of the Moon Walk whereas in actuality it was "Bill Bailey". Not the comedian, but a very talented Tap Dancer. -
You can see him demonstratig the dance-move in that video, it's at the end.
PS: Not entirely sure if this is what your looking for, but you may find it interesting.
That is REALLY interesting, thanks for sharing that.
Not interesting at all. James Brown did it before M. Jackson and he got it from Bill Bailey. The misconception is due to the common folk presuming.
Also, why has no one noted the constant lie that Obama wasn't born in the U.S or that he's a Muslim. I can't stand it when I hear people say this and it's still a common stupid lie people believe.
Actually, it usually is very interesting to alot of people as they have only known Michael Jackson to do the famous Moon Walk. Not just "common folk".
To know Michael Jackson made the moon walk famous is common knowledge (in western culture). To assume he's the one who started it is perhaps assuming without considering the possibility of someone else is something else.
Emperor Hirohito, from his own diary confirms such speculations, knew what was happening during WWII. He was not helpless in a sense that after the loss Leyte he help several meetings with government officials on the progress of the war as well as before 1945 would ask for updates and general information on the war was going in the pacific. When he decided to surrender the government followed suit. It was a group of army fanatics that assaulted the palace in search of the surrender speech. The coup was crushed on the Emperor's order. So he was not helpless.

The wikipedia article cites its sources, you know. Wikipedia might not be a legitmate academic source, (these forums are, of course, not academic, but whatever.) but which of gongryong's sources were legit, exactly?

I am the farthest from American patriot yet I think he has no point. If there is plenty evidence, please show it. He is making extraordinary claim, he should provide evidence. Against as weak argument as his wiki is more than enough.

"Small" ?! Are you out of your mind - small ?! Hitler - somewhere between 7-8 million people. Stalin on the other hand - 8-10 million people. Oh, and note - the majority of Stalin's victims, were not killed because they were considered (at that time, by few morons) to be a weaker race, but because they had free will and mind. In those 8-10 millions, a lot of people were actually bolsheviki supporters, which even when faced at the wall to be executed, did not believed that Stalin would do something like that to his own party members and thought that there were some sort of rebellion that took place that stirred things around. The Gulag being small ? Compared to what exactly ? You can't compare it with the Holocaust, because the only thing that connects them, is the time in which those things happened. Even thou that's also arguable, since the Holocaust did ended after the World War II. The Gulag experiment thou - didn't. You can compare the Holocaust with the Armenian Genocide done by the Turks, but not with Stalin's Witch-hunt.
Thanks for the support Aurocaido That post was an awesome 9th post :p Seriously, dont sweat it too much, lets keep it level-headed

@mcc, and others of the same idea: I really thought this is old topic and posted it here as a formality to discussion such as this. Hence i find it curious that people still think this is an "extraordinary claim." if this was a moon hoax thread i'd have posted it post haste. this is not, and almost everything you need is out there.

Lol no post has come anywhere close to providing anything that would be considered "proof." Yet as soon as someone mentions the lunar landing a gang of people instantly start attacking the accusation asking for "proof." There just seems to be certain no fly zones when it comes to determing historical inaccuracy; American history.

Yeah. I'm not a die-hard American Patriot. I've done alot of research on it myself and most of it is lies or hypothosese which are ultimatly proven wrong. Sorry to burst your bubble.

How are you getting those numbers, what do the stand for, that's the question. You can blame Hitler for tens of millions of deaths and even more, you can blame Stalin similarly. But what are you actually counting.
My boss actually said something really odd to me a couple months back. He said that schools were not teaching kids about the holocaust or something like that.
Can anyone confirm that people are trying to weed out history like that to the new generation? Or is that just BS.

Out there means the same to me as "the friend of a friend of a friend once told me".
The Lunar Laser Ranging experiment is a set of reflectors placed on the moon that ANYONE can use to figure the exact range from the earth to the moon. If it is there I ask how did it get there if we did not land on the moon.
You criticize me for citing wikipedia, yet he has posted 0 sources as to any concrete proof that we didn't land on the moon, he just said google it. And you question my sources, rofl.
also : http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/multimedia/lroimages/apollosites.html the Lunar Reconnaissance orbiter, a satellite orbiting the moon right now has imaged the leftover objects we have left on the moon, you can even make out the path that the astronauts walked, still visible cause there is no wind on the moon.
"No Stars Are Visible theory"
The Apollo astronauts all landed on the day side of the moon, and all the videos they shot from orbit were over the day side, so the exposure settings were all for daylight. Set your camera to 1/125 at f/8 (a setting typical of the slower films in use in 1969). Aim it at the night sky and shoot pictures. Tell me how many stars you see. Aim your camcorder at the sky and see how many stars you can film.
Even with the eye you'd have difficulty seeing stars from the daytime lunar surface unless you stood in a shadow and shielded yourself from any light reflected from the ground, for the same reason you can't see stars from a brightly lit parking lot at night.
ball is in your court, provide one piece of evidence.
also the mythbusters did it:

you continue to say "The Proof is out there" while never giving us any of this proof, I would use the exact same argument agaisnt you and say, "The Proof is out there" that we 100% landed on the moon.

Please, there is a lot of other topics in this thread that proof was demanded for. It has nothing to do with it being American. It has everything to do with him claiming extraordinary stuff without providing a shred of evidence. Also he is posting claims that has been debunked time and time again in the past, that is the reason people are even more sceptical.
