Hi TLers!
I wonder how old TL users are. My guess is that early 20s would be the average, but reading the posts sometimes one would think many are 10 year olds :p
How old are you?
BTW, who among you here is old enough to know "1HL2L"? :D

+ Show Spoiler [Age Bracketing] +pyrobb Canada. January 12 2011 22:43 Why is 16-18 and 19-20 in two groups? if u add them together, its the largest demographic uNiGNoRe Germany. January 13 2011 00:58 This poll doesn't make any sense. The way the ages are grouped together makes a bar chart completely useless. Lets not sweat this fellas. I was less concerned with the instrumentation than with having a general sketch of how old TL users are. The bracketing is framed loosely on the following assumptions: <= 10 : - These are the babies who weren't even around when BW was out. For sure they may be tech savvy already, but they are still in a safe age such that their parents have considerable control over their online activities
11-15 : - late grade school, middle school, and high school students - our budding gamers
16 - 18 - - late high school and early college for some, old enough to be really into BW/SC2/gaming
19-20 : college students 21 - 25 : - late college students or early professionals. they (I included) were old enough when BW was out, but majority of kids who played then was 1 age group older (in my experience at least)
26 - 30 : - professionals already, hopefully. and coincidentally, the real children of BW! those who old enough to remember what "1HL2L" means! xD
31 - 40 : - certified adults now, and one generation too old to claim the BW was theirs
> 41 : - I'd like to know who they are too

Like I said this is informal at best. No grand statistical insight is expected out of this. Just enjoy and chime in your experience is you have some. :D Pokebunny United States. January 12 2011 23:15 15, BW first generation.
I've been playing off and on since I was 4. Seriously now? You remind me of my cousin Bruce. I'm also indoctrinating him on the values of BW. (He'll figure SC2 on his own). xD
26-30 (BW 1st generation)
I was thinking of making the 21-25 bracket as first generation, but i remember when BW was out in 1998, all PC bangs were swarmed by college and late highschool kids older than me and my friends and schoolmates. We were the pests who they'd bully to leave so they can play :D I guess it was their generation more than ours. xD
15. But I have played BW for 2 years! :D
First gen oldie here. I wish I found TL when it was formed Might have not lost interest in BW!
26. Like pretty old, losing hair, losing stamina when it comes to drinking a whole weekend etc.... :p
Im 22 and i've been played sc since 98..
26-30 (BW 1st generation)
actually 27 and did play SC
16, turning 17 soon.
Been playing BW since my younger cousin introduced me to it like 4+ years ago. I remember playing WC2 back then visiting him and seeing him playing some really awesome looking game and i asked what it was and he said "Starcraft". I just bought the game later when i saw it in a game store since it was so cheap and really loved it
21, ahhh will be 22 soon this year...
19. no BW (only singleplayer with my uncle when i was little), no real SC2 beta participation (was in from patch5-6 on but never played a lot, mainly watched), now SC2 maniac. :p
19, played BW just for a bit.

25 here, I remember when sc 1st came out my cousin showed the game to me as the "space version of wc2".

23 here. Its funny to me. After I turned 21, which took soooo long to get there from 18, I no longer have nothing left to look foward too.

21-25, but I did play BW on and off since 2000
20, soon to be 21. Played SC and BW on and off as soon as they came out.

I've been playing off and on since I was 4.

15, but I watched my dad play broodwar since its release and first started playing only during highschool. After sometime, I'm still a noob because I watch korean progaming more than I play

i hope you realize that starcraft first came out in 1998, which means you're stating that you've been involved with starcraft since you where three or four years old. that's quite remarkable to say the least.
i'm 26 this year. i used to play a lot of brood war, but not really seriously until 2005ish. i've enjoyed blizzards games ever since the glorious days of the original warcraft, where multiple building selection was a joke of the future and you could only select up to four units at a time.
it's completely diablos fault that i didn't play enough starcraft in the early years. blizzard - you've ruined my life. now days i don't really play a lot of sc2, it's all very sporadic and casual, i'm afraid. maybe soon i'll have more time and motivation to play. -_-
26 yo, played BW since 2001
People bewteen 16 and 25 make up over 2/3rds of SC2 players herre
In polls like this it's always nicer to NOT sort the results, so the graph could form a bell curve.
I was 15 when SC came out in my country, i'm 27 now, been playing it everyday ever since. SC was waaay better than age of empires and wc2...
make no mistake, I still suck tho. never even tried going pro, not worth it for me.
but man do I have fun with it! =)
Bought and played SC the day it was released and it instantly became my favorite game, a position it still holds to this day, though I only play SC2 for MP now. The manual in Swedish is my most prized possession. The translations are hilarious.
21 and just started playing SC2 in the summer. Ask Geoff...he'll tell you it shows. But I'm a 10 year+ FPS player in Quake and Counter-Strike So...I frag n00bs hardcore in those games.

24 yo, played SC (BW) between 1998-2002/2003 + occasionally on Lan parties

23, played sc on battle.net first time when i was 13. didn't play any 1v1's until 16 or something IIRC i guess im 2nd generation bw? i remember most players were older than me back then.

21, but when I was 13 I also said I was 21.

Just turned 26, I'm old. I bought wc2 when it came out so of course when I heard that they were making a new game called starcraft I had to have that. I've been playing off and on since then

I believe the demographic shifted towards younger people since SC2 came out.

got bw when it first came out when i was in middle school (actually 5th grade is when i played my first game). Played it off an on for years till i found tl in late 06/ early 07. Took a while before i made an account though.

44, I reckon I'm one of the oldest, but definately not wisest.

BW first generation representing :x

Just turned 22. I was into Starcraft before BW was released, but I definitely was one of those 'pesky kids' that the older kids didn't want to deal with when they were working on getting good.
25 but I bought Stacraft on its release date so I would consider myself Starcraft first generation.
16-18 age group, played SC Vanilla and BW, though I never got to A in ICCUP, which was my dream for all of middleschool and half of highschool. I've been playing Starcraft since before I was in school! I used to name all of my zealots and would sulk if any died....
28 here, played all the blizz RTS right through from warcraft 1. Never been serious enough to play ICCUP or anything like that, but have enjoyed all of the games.
20. played bw from 1999
19 almost 20, I'd imagine you were right when you said low 20's is going to be the average
I remember playing SC when it was new, but everyone was just using a cracked version, so we could never play online, only custom games against computer or at a LAN, usually BGH. (And besides, do you have any idea how expensive it was to go online for 30 minutes on a 56k modem those days?! I sure don't, but my mom said it was very expensive!)
And my version of starcraft had missing Corsair sounds, so whenever the corsair would try to attack, or I'd make one and click on it, the game would crash on me -_-
Kinda sad I've missed out on so much competetive gaming (considering I never enjoyed the FPS scene iether..).
24 this summer btw.

You could get good dial up for 20 bucks a month unlimited back then :p
Anyway, 28 here, got into war2 initially playing 1v1's with friends via modem (pre battle.net), and got Starcraft when it first game out. Joined TL way back in 2002, but haven't played much at all since 2003, which just shows the quality of and how addicting this site can be

15 almost 16
21, started playing starcraft around the time broodwar was released. I remember watching my friends play and I was especially intrigued by flying terran buildings, battlecruisers and burrowing hydras. :D Starcraft felt so special back then, wish I could get that feeling back.
19. Have not been keeping up with SC2 at all. Still love watching BW

BW first generation... I like the sound of it . 26.
16! First played bw when i was 6 and i feel good about that!
21, first played Starcraft back in 1998. Played mostly against computers with my cousin, and just spammed mass carriers.
26 years old. StarCraft 1998. Several thousand games on 56k dial-up. :|
17. I played BW very casually with one of my friends when we were probably 12 or 13, we tried to set up a LAN at his house but neither of us knew what we were doing haha. Played a lot of WC3 though, so I'd say that that was my first real RTS (and now of course I'm playin SC2)
25 but sometimes I feel like I am 30...
edit: had forgotten about Dial up ...I remember having to make sure no one used the phone at my house when I played SC with my friends. If they tried to dial out I would get kicked out of game , lol those were the days!

I divided each bin's amount by the number of years represented by that bin to try to normalize the results.
I left out the <10 and >40 bins as they were very tiny... and my method of normalization would also fail.

I'm actually kind of impressed by how diverse the age range is here. Course I'm 27, which already puts me in the older bracket. A lot of people still play rogue-likes, btw. I went through a period of nethack addiction... I quit after nethack killed a character randomly by having him slip as he went down the stairs. I'd already experienced the choking to death on food ending, so enough was enough.

21. Played Blizzard strategy games since WC2, but only found out about the pro scene in ~2004. Posted on here ever since.
17. Playing BW since 10.. I think. Whenever I was in third grade =P
21, but I definitely played broodwar when i was a youngin noob .
19, played some BW, but not too much.
25 here - definitely BW-gen but never played it seriously, got infected by the fascination of esports with the release of wc3
If that poll wouldve come out a month later, id be in the first generation group :D
24 here, BW gaming in a Clan (Guess which? Yeah! Clan FetT!) since 1.08...
23, played lots of BGH and $$$$ maps but no competitive sc. Also played Wc3, HoN and multiple FPS'.

Your OP doesn't even provide valid reasoning as to why you split 16-18 and 19-20 into two groups, when most of the other options were given an age range of 5 years.

My First post on Team liquid so this is a good thread to introduce myself with. I am 30, at a stage where life has started to interfere with my sc2 career I played Brood war against the computer mostly. Was never any good at it, but I do love it.

Hi. there is a spoiler in the OP about it
18, played brood war as a kid but was too young to know about the competitive scene, but when I heard starcraft 2 was coming out I started looking around... If I would of known about this community I would of kept interest in BW for longer.
23, 24 in a few months.
played a little when sc first came out, played more later on in highschool and college.
26. played bw in 2001 and 02, but never competitively.

With my vote for "> 41 (ageless babys)" it is not 0% anymore but 1% . By the way I am 16.264 days old at the moment. I wish sometimes a league for people >35, but some times not; I still can compete with some of you.
In fact I allready was >35 when I first met SC and BW in the year 2003; I was slow at the beginning now slower. One day I might be the oldest person in the world playing SC II or which ever the latest version at that time (but I am not planning to play after 88 I would be too old for that type things I guess).

Started playing as a 15 year old, and now I'm 18! Stopped :S
But I'm super active on TL and watch shit loads of streams! It's scary

20.. played BW when I was 12, but didn't stick with it.

I'm 16 and I started playing starcraft when I think I was like grade 1 or something.
20, got into SC2 beta and absolutely loved the scene.
18, 19 in february. Was acually a RPG-player untill I found SC2, but now I'm in love with rts games.
29 - so 1st gen BW (no online bnet / iccup till much later - no decent affordable internet at the time.)
I'm getting 26 years old in the upcoming march.
25 Here, but somehow that doesn't fall into BW First gen? Oh yeah, when I started playing it was still just called Starcraft :D
same as Carsto, I'll be 26 this march as well.
if your 25 now, starcraft was released when you were about 12 or 13 years old. easily old enough to start playing it.
I know I was... the game barely ran on my old Pentium Pro. but I didn't care. it was Starcraft. haha
I'm 21,5 years old, played SC & BW offline for years before I finally got internet in 05, played BW on & off untill 09, then switched over to SC2, I like to play the game but hate Bnet 2.0. And unlike BW which kept me hooked for years, I never had much interest in SC2 because it took 3 years after they announced it (kinda like with D3...) before it was finally released and so much else happened in that time that SC2 wasn't all that impressive after having played so many other games so I lost interest after like a month. I still like the game but I'm dissapointed how slowly things are being updated and balanced...it's Bnet 2.0 I want revamped.
35 - (and as most of you are too young to remember) Yes, I actually invented the wheel.
21-25 (BW FIRST GENERATION!)
I mean come on just because I was maybe 2-3 years younger (going to be 25 soon) does not mean I didn't get SC1, and later BW, as soon as they were released.
I also loved playing WC2, especially during my primary school years (kindergarden I guess for the US guys among us).
I'm 18 years old. Started playing Brood War years ago - got into it through watching my parents play against each other. Mum played Terran, Dad zerg. I thought the game looked awesome, so I started playing it as soon as I could. ^^
Never knew about iccup or anything. I wish I did - I might have actually became good at the game. xD
18 started playing bw when I was like 9 lol. I was noob though still great times xD now sc2 lover xD
Accidently clicked 31-40. I'm 26.

I'm 13 and I started playing around 5. Actually memorized 4 pool though :D

21 years old now, been gaming much since i was 15, before that runescape hehe and the good old games on my big bros PC . I'm part of the new generation wave of SC2 players basically. BW was before my time or it didn't exactly caught my interest as i was too young. But that doesn't mean i have a very rich RTS bagground has i've played Read alert 1, red alert 2, tiberium wars (which was the latest rts i bought but i think it failed), then i've played a tiny bit scbw at a friend and yeah my bro played a whole lot of RTS games and strategy in general. I forgot i've played wc2-3 too but sc2 really really got me into the new scene and interested.
20, played Brood War since a little while after release.
17. Played Brood War back in 4th grade... so when I was 9 (~2002). Mainly played single player, or Ultimate Micro Jail (anyone remember that?). But I stopped. I rediscovered it, along with the competitive scene in 7th/8th grade, and have been playing it ever since (until SC2).
22, been gaming since I was... 6 or 7... no life ftw? xD
19 , played brood war a little, but it was kinda hard for me to understand when i was younger .Now i love RTS' , and am trying to get better in SC2, though progress is slow ://
I'll vote in a couple of weeks, let me make it into the next group. It is kind of obvious which group I'm in... well I think its obvious. Been gaming ever since I was a toddler - I have a sibling 10 years older than me.
15, disregard what my profile says... Got into broodwar when I was like 8 or something, saw my older friends playing and looked cool. Only really played vs computer until I was maybe 11 then it was a lot of customs for a year and then ladder.
26, I'm old according to TL.
I remember BW coming out in 98 and having to save pocket money to buy it.
It was pretty rough playing it on modems back then.
19! Didn't play much BW, avid sc2 player :D
27 and way over my prime haha
nice I am 29.
how does aging feel?
i don't know. as a kid, i noticed grown ups doing stupid things.
now as i consider myself ready to judge, i still figure out, and now call it, whole humanity does stupid things. funny. i got the idea of humanity just refuses to grow up. and i got this idea as a kid.
hay! maybe we will meet tomorrow, if you run into a 29 y old friendly guy, maybe he just loves humanity his whole live, does not know why, hates how treating normally works, and is me. you never know.
like i would love to just jump to someones head, cry AAARGNAAARG bitch its head with harmless hits and say "are you captain picard and where is your mask?"
then i would pull a white land of magic to show im not in aggressive interest.
confirm?
22, turning 23 soon.played BW since 2002
17, didn't get into the competitive scene until late 9th grade, and even now I'm not really that serious about it. I love to watch and play, and I want to get better, I just don't put the effort in. =P
Just turned sixteen so I supposed I'm in that category now.
Why the fuck is there a <10 vote? If you're under ten then you're too young to post!
14 here.
You really shouldn't generalize, nor assume. And then there's the logical fallacy of being "too young" to post. That's like, a dicto simpliciter ad dictum secundum quid, ad hominem, and poisoning the well, all in one post.
Anyways, you don't have to post to be a TL'er. So you missed the point too

24, Been playing since 2000.

22. Starcraft came out when I was 10 and I remember getting it along with Jedi Knight as an "end of school year" present with my bro and dad
26... when starcraft came out I was stupid enough to make fun of it for being warcraft in space :'(. Played a ton of warcraft 2 with my brother and close friends not on BNet though. I regret being close minded but loving being part of SC2 now .
23. I remember playing sc when it first came out and thinking wow this is awesome I had played warcraft but this was just so much cooler. As for the 1HL2L was that the weird glitch with lings morphing to lurkers or mutas or something I really am not sure just got a friend here same age telling me thats what it is (he could be trolling me though)
I played witchcraft when I was 11
15, and played BW since I was 8.
18, played SC in '98 too.

Even then it was hard because I typed reeeaaally slowly so by the time I was done entering all the cheats I wanted to use, almost 5 minutes had passed. Also, didn't starcraft come out in 1997, and broodwar came out in 1998?

19, but I still generally feel like a young'n in the SC community.
Turn 26 in less than a month, but still voted 1-25 meaning I'm not first bw gen
16, brood war since i was 8 (2002). Never really played sc2. Now that you explain why you separated the ages the way you did i think it makes perfect sense.
20, turning 21 this March.
I played BW but never multiplayer. I always played the Single Customs and VS AI. I remember I always cheated on games, The only reason I didn't play more is because my BW kept crashing whenever I played Terran so I was always stuck with P or Z.
Might explain the reason my T sucks compared to my P or Z =\
22. Played Broodwar from 12-15 never on iccup or anywhere where decent players were playing. SCII Since Beta.
20 in 2 hours (ill be a make a transition from annoying faggoty kid to normal person ((according to people here)) LOL
18, and I played a bit of SC when I was really young, but I didn't really know what I was doing (my brother and I played it, he's 25 now btw). My bro got me into watching the Korean scene a couple of years ago, like early junior year-ish (2008), starting with Cholera and Rise (oh I miss Cholera's commentaries soo much D: . Then there was Moletrap, Diggity, Klazart, etc. too, but I really enjoyed the Cholera/Rise dual commentaries the most). And now I'm here, and I'm still horrible at BW haha. (D- oh yeah!), and SC2 as well .
18, I was like 6 years old when I first played bw. I only played single player with lots of cheat codes back then.
I only started playing multiplayer around 3 years ago.
21. Started BW back in Middle School. (I guess I was around 11? I was 1 year ahead) Found TL around 2006; didn't bother registering until 2007 when I found out that JulyZerg and Savior make me warm and mushy inside.
15, almost 16. I guess I am the budding new generation of gamer! I remember watching my dad play BW when I was three. My only regret is that I was not involved in the Brood War scene when I was younger.
