The government's are making a mockery of, as you say, a serious crime.

While some level of skepticism is healthy due to the whole wikileaks situation, I think the outright denial expressed in this thread is a massive over reaction. He should face his day in court over this, to do otherwise potentially denies justice to victims of sexual assault. This is a serious crime, and no matter how important the wikileaks project might be there should never be a free pass just because someone is famous (see Polanski, Roman).
Furthermore for all the bleasting about corrupt governments and heroic acts by wikileaks against them, I ask you what kind of just government is it that does not act to protect half its populace? Assange is accused of using his body weight to hold a woman down and forcibly have sex with her, and having sex with another woman while sleeping, both of which are reasonably described as rape. Cut the crap about "surprise sex" so it can be treated as no big deal, any reasonable government has a duty of care to its female citizens to prosecute any man accused of such acts.
Assange's guilt isn't the issue here, he should have his day in court to determine that. What's the issue is people who want to paint him as a martyr and enable him to avoid that day in court.
Actually. If you read the case you would understand they have no case against him. Not even the woman who are accusing him. Because it was consensual sex. Even glenn beck is against his Detainment for what they are charging him. Thats how retarded the charges are. Additionally the punishment for this crime is a mere 7k$ or something (as previously said in this thread... somewhere). It's not as serious of a crime as some would like you to believe, yet an international arrest has been made and he is currently in prison, something that he couldn't be sentenced to. It's a crime i've commited more then once actually. Feminist should not be allowed to make laws. Feminist should actually not be allowed anywhere near the judicial system. And i thought it was around $700?

Yea, this sounds about right.

The crime he's currently being charged with carries a fine, if found guilty, of $715 US dollars IIRC.
Yep, that sounds like a serious enough offense for Interpol involvement, #1 most wanted man in the world, an international manhunt, and threats of extradition. Makes perfect sense.

GOD DAMN IT. I knew we had some fanatical feminists in this country but this is going to far.

hmm he probably should've just went to Sweden to face the music, have a little fun and dance with the authorities over the smear campaign, get a top lawyer or pay the woman off and when its all over and done with he'll emerge more immune to similar accusations.

I'm pretty sure if this guy was Arab he would been caught like 5 months ago. While I do agree with what he's doing with wiki links, he could very well be considered a terrorist.

It's amazing that in the US even people that support wikileaks think he can be considered a terrorist. The propaganda going on there must be tremendous. It harken back to the days where the US media convinced the US population Saddom Hussain was behind 9/11.
Anyway, anywhere in Eurupe saying that Assange should be executed or that he is worse than Bin Laden would be illegal. And an argument can be made for that. And you don't get fined just 7000 euro for that. I saw some compilation of like 7 US talk show hosts that would have broken the 'seeding hate'-law.
Freedom of speech is important, and I actually agree with the US interpretations. But that doesn't mean those people aren't immoral. Also, what about Assange's freedom of speech? What law did he break?

I don't think I've heard anyone say he should be executed or is worse than binladen and your description makes it sound like Europe has some freedom of speech problems of its own.
Also, lets talk about this whole situation without saying it's the U.S. government: George and Larry own the company "Awesome Corp." They communicate in private, confidential manners about business competitors and allies(sometimes in negative lights and sometimes revealing their strategies for dealing with individuals). Bob works for Awesome Corp, is privy to the information, and decides to give the information to his friend, Joe, without authorization. Joe releases the communications publicly. George and Larry can and will successfully sue Joe and Bob along with Joe and Bob possibly receiving criminal charges.
Joe and Bob are "Heroes", right?
The "surprise sex" charges are a completely different story and I'm extremely confident he'll receive a fair trial in that case.
Finally, why was he hiding? The U.S. government couldn't do anything to him if he was staying in the public light and hadn't done anything illegal. There would be an enormous outrage. Politicians wouldn't get re-elected (which is all they really care about). The reality: what he did was possibly illegal. He was afraid of the fact that he might not be protected because if it's simply illegal, people can't be that outraged if he's punished according to the laws that he knowingly broke.

I think they were Glenn Beck and O'Reily but the only time I hear about them is if they did something completely crazy again so they are ridiculed all over the world and appear on tv here.
And yes, Europe has a little freedom of speech problem, although most would disagree. It's just that free speech has a bit too many limitations, like when you offend religion. But that's really minor to the US going to war all the time and destroying the international economy.

Joe and Bob are "Heroes", right? Only Bob is guilty of anything.

Joe and Bob are "Heroes", right? Only Bob is guilty of anything. The information is confidential and owned by Awesome Corp. Joe is therefore not allowed to spread the information. Unless Bob had made him believe he was authorized to share the information, Joe is still going to be in legal trouble.
EDIT:switching stupid hypothetical names

That analogy is not applicable at all. If the business practices done by george and larry turn out to be illegal or quite unethical then Joe and Bob can turn out to be heroes in the eyes of the public. Whistleblowers can walk a fine line between being heroes and villians

I have a feeling that this whole publicity isn't "the US paying off the Swedes to get their hands on him," but rather, something to tarnish his reputation as a trustworthy individual. I don't buy it for a second, but I know there's masses in every country involved (especially the U.S.) that couldn't critically think their way out of a cardboard box, who probably have large mouths. This stunt is for those people.

iv been following this as its been going on reading articles such as these , news reports and threads just like this one. I really hope somehow they come to agreements or actual legal action against this person for the things he has done. Being a alleged rapist, molester, and coercing a minor is already a horrific thing. On top of that as we speak after releasing US military documents that are putting some of our most important diplomatic relationships at risk. Iv read reports that a group of US senators we're wanting to charge him with espionage charges saying that the legal definition of such charge would and should be used in this case. I don't know what is going to happen or what they should do but i only feel that someone like this should be stopped alone on the base of national security issues.
As i type this tho things are probably already changing and working out from a couple google searches i was already finding new information about the status of the rape charges and what not. I just hope he doesn't trying to make this much worse on himself tho by hiding and threatening to release even more documents, its just sad and i feel really bad for him and the people he is affecting.

Dont hate on the nutcase woman, shes small fry. Rather, it is particularly curious as to why her case was picked up by the prosecution in the first place, since the charges are so obviously baseless.
In other news, does anyone have anymore info on why VISA/Mastercard copped out? I know and have read Amazon's statement, but cant seem to locate something from the creditcard companies.
4Chan's jumping on board in defense for assange is amusing, i wonder how much of an impact it will have in the course of this piece of history, since 4chan is such a wild card.
Also, with note to the cables and the war logs, neither batch of sensitive information seem to be very threatening. Sure, there has been debate over the war logs and names released, but since wikileaks, prior to releasing the war logs, has reached out to 3rd parties to protect exactly what people are now accusing it to have failed to protect, i am leaning to conclude that the info in the war logs was harmless. With the political cables, i dont see why it hurts diplomacy if that other obnoxious asshole thinks you are a horndog chasing after hot nurses all the time. I'm sure anyone in the politics game already assumes you are being gossiped about by the other players, so releasing those emails wont destroy industries or start wars or anything. So i dont see what the big fuss is. Wiki leaks is just a shield and a platform for those who have information but need protection.
Rather, the people trying to shut him up are further fanning precisely the flames they will later get burned by.
Edit: To further expand on my 2nd last point,
taking down assange is stupid. He has stated publicly in interviews that his role is to be the lightning rod. Wikileaks as a foundation, as a collection of individuals, will still continue to exist even if assange does get taken down. It is like trying to silence 4chan by throwing dirt at moot's name.
You cant escape the fact that there are people from the inside who, out of a sense of public duty, want to leak sensitive information, and there are people on the outside who want transparency and want to air the dirt of usually untouchable institutions.
Additional Edit: Kudos to TL, lots of good links to sources in this thread :D

I am reminded of a speech I once heard by JFK. I think it speaks to the truth of what is going on here. There are many very wealthy and powerful people who want this guy destroyed, a perfect example of governments silencing people who expose truths that you won't hear on the news. Anyway, if you've never heard this speech I think you should take a few minutes and listen very carefully to the words of a great man and think about what is going on in this situation with wikileaks.

The TSA, wikileaks, etc...are not about terrorism. They are about making the American people submit. And to arrest a guy for not using a condem is ridiculous, especially without even offering him bail. Let alone when the women is a feminist and has CIA ties, then hosted a party the FOLLOWING DAY AND INVITED HIM!
