The main thing holding me back from getting a pair is not wanting to have to spend a crap ton on a amp and whatever else I need to get the most out of it. If you're not looking for some ludicrous peak output volume or some type of complementary audiophile coloration (distortions), an Asus Xonar Essence STX (or ST) is under $200 and would do the job. You could probably get by with something cheaper. In which way would you not be getting the most out of headphones using a lesser source? Does it really matter that you're not getting the best possible whatever? Does getting the most out of it involve building yourself an anechoic chamber for listening so ambient noise is blocked out? Unless you can define the goal you're aiming for, it's difficult to reach it. Maybe the goal or objective is closer in reach (or further away) than you think. This is also a curious question to me. Aren't you the one using it, so don't you know what you want out of it? Different people have different priorities for what is important and what they prefer. I personally don't like on-ear headphones or headsets of any kind. These are factors that people often look at: + Show Spoiler [I dunno why I typed all this] + Sound quality: -Frequency response (quantity of bass, mids, and treble relative to each other) -Quality of bass -Quality of mids -Quality of treble *Bass, mids, and treble are all ranges, and you could subdivide them more. Comfort: -Does it fit over the ear (circumaural) or on the ear (supraaural)? -Earpad material and quality -Headband material and quality -Distribution of headband weight on head -Clamping force and distribution of this force over the earpads Build: -Size -Can it be folded or collapsed? -Sturdiness of frame, headband adjustment mechanism -In which ways the headband can be adjusted -Length of cable -Quality and construction of cable -Cable detachable? -Cable out of left ear cup only or both cups? Technical specs of transducers: -Impedance (ohms) -Sensitivity (usually listed in dB SPL / 1 mW input power or dB SPL / 1 V rms input voltage) -Maximum input power (before it is damaged) *The impedance and sensitivity heavily influence how difficult it is to drive from different sources. Sets with higher impedance and lower sensitivity will be quieter. Many old studio monitors and high-end headphones are too quiet to be used out of most consumer sources. Sound getting in and out: -Closed (sound-isolating) or Open (non-isolating) -Active noise cancellation or not? -How much sound leaks out and how much gets inside? *If closed, you would expect less in each direction, but not all closed sets are equal at all in this respect For a headset and not headphones: -Type of microphone -Microphone positioning -Noise cancelling? -Microphone recording quality and technical specs Price: -Duh

It's just one person's opinions, but it's probably worth looking through. In terms of accurate sound reproduction for the price, the Head-Direct RE0 at $80 is a very popular high-value choice. There are many reports over the years about build quality/durability issues with it though. "Highest quality" is pretty vague, as there are many aspects of quality to consider. Most people listening to music with mostly acoustic instruments prefer a neutral (flat) frequency response, while those listening to most other kinds of music may prefer a V-shaped response (boosted bass and treble) that's usually considered more fun or exciting. Any particular preferences? The RE0 is fantastic for clarity and balance (for its price), but I would stay away from recommending it to most people because it doesn't have the sound signature most people are listening to. Even if they do like a supposedly flat response, they probably enjoy a more bassy or warm sound. Most people would be disappointed with the RE0 because it won't give them what they're looking for. Unless that person has had experience with other mid-range headphones or IEMs and knows that a very flat response is what they want, they probably won't like the RE0.

Ive looked at the Asus Xonar Essence sound card, but at the moment I only have a laptop and probably won't be getting a desktop anytime soon. I don't need the BEST possible whatever. By making the most out of it I mean being able run it the way it is meant to be run (i.e. you wouldn't buy a top of the line computer in 2011, then run windows 95 on it). The target price for me would be under $200 or so probably, maybe stretching a bit upwards if it would be worth it. I'm a noob at this stuff, (although I have done some research), so I don't really know what I absolutely need or what would be optimal. Thanks for any advice.

I currently have Steel Series Siberia Headset. I love listening to music on my computer (Mostly 320kbps mp3s, some FLACs) through foobar2000. I do not have a dedicated soundcard, I use my onboard soundcard from my motherboard ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 which has a SoundMax sound system. I don't have a dedicated pre-amp, and I've never owned on before. I'm thinking of getting my first high quality headphones and I'm really liking the AKG K 701 and the Quincy Signature series. Would cashing out $400 on a high quality headphone be worth it with my setup? Or should I be getting a better soundcard and a pre-amp first instead? Thanks for your input!

Maybe somebody else knows better, but it was rumored that the AKG Q701 is just a repackaged K702 (which is to say, a K701 with a detachable cable). I'm not sure how that story ended up, if it turned out to be true or not. What kind of music do you listen to and what kind of sound would you like? I assume you want open headphones? A K701 may be a fine choice, but I don't think it's necessarily what most people are looking for when making a first big upgrade. What features or qualities of the K701 did you think would suit you well? The integrated ADI AD2000B audio on the motherboard shouldn't be that bad, at least compared to older integrated audio chips, but with a budget of $400 you can get nice headphones and a decent source. That would definitely be the way to go if you're spending that much money. There's no reason to restrict yourself to headphones that could be powered to respectable volumes by the onboard audio and also not be too revealing of its inadequacies.

I'm hoping the open cans of the AD700 are easier on my ear drums for extended listening. The huge soundstage and comfort levels seems great for hourly gaming sessions and for ertain types of music genres, but I'm a little worried about the bass for certain genres of music like dub step & hip hop from what I've read. I am hoping I will be satisfied after some EQ adjustments if the initial bass doesn't satisfy me. If the lack of bass is a problem even with some EQ tweaks, I will buy some RX700's for 35-40 dollars and attempt to mod them so I have some decent quality closed headphones with "punch" as well. Overall, I chose this route over getting the m50 or some sennheisers in the 100-150 dollars range as a starting point.

You can grab a closed headphone later if you want something with more bass. Look at the RX900 or the XB500. It will have more bass than the RX700. If you are willing to spend a little more, look at the M50 or XB700
