At first i was going to buy the HD280 but now i got some extra money so im looking for something a little better, a step above this cans. Any advice? I've looked the Audio Technica M50 and Sennheiser PX360.
My friend is going to buy for me at bestbuy and its a little expensive there.. but its my only option.
Just to make sure, you want passive noise attenuation through a closed-back headphone with good isolation, not active noise cancellation, right? All the ones you listed just are ordinary closed-back headphones.
I'm not familiar with the PX360, and I can't find much information on it either--maybe it's unpopular, maybe because it's not that great? Some headphones just tend to be overlooked though, so it's hard to say. ATH-M50 is pretty popular and should be a safe step up from the HD 280, but the HD 280 isolates a little better. It's sometimes possible to find Shure SRH840, AKG K271, and Beyerdynamic DT-770 for $150, but probably not at a Best Buy. Shure SRH440 and Koss Pro DJ100 would both be around the original HD 280 price, but maybe they're worth looking at too.

i was thinking about getting some siberias (the first one not V2)...can anyone give me info based on experience? i've heard they are quite comfortable
|
I owned ATH M50, Senheisser PC150, PC135, Steelseries V2...
ATH M50 is the best un-amped headphone.
Steelseries just SUCK in general compared to other decent headphones. Break easy too, (one headphone always slightly louder than other, and I had 2 pairs). Steelseries doesn't even specialize in audio. They just market to those "bronze" gamers who think it's cool to have headphones from a "gaming" brand.
Senheissers are decent with an quality amp.. but a good amplifier costs $300.
ATH M50 best bang for buck...

in my possession: - ultimate ear 700s - head-direct RE0s - klipsch S4s - audiotechnica ATH-M50 (my friend just dumped it on me)
the RE0s are nice but fragile. i wouldn't take them anywhere but use them occasionally. i really don't like the klipsch much since the flanges are oval (wtf?) and the plastic rubs against my ear for an overall uncomfortable experience. the bass is a little bit too powerful too and the sound comes out a bit too muddled for me.
(edit): i've heard shure olives provide a better fit for your ear but i didn't bother since the sound isn't to my liking. the overall build quality seems a bit shoddy too compared to my preferred IEMs (/edit).
the audiotechnicas are collecting dust.
i cannot advocate the UE700s enough though. they are so so comfortable and the passive noise cancellation is excellent (one of the tip sizes fit my ear oh so perfectly). the sound is super clear and i like the way the mids are pretty strong. don't overlook logitech warranty either, especially since you guys seem to have so many stories of ripping out your headphones accidentally. they are willing to replace everything in a heartbeat and even offered a full refund months after i originally bought the pair. super low-hassle, free shipping, and they even let me keep the accessories so now i have two sets of flanges, two sets of COMFY foams even though i don't like them too much, and two carrying containers.

These are AMAZING earphones for $18 shipped. I got them for $13 for myself and my wife for Christmas, and I can't believe the quality. First, they come with 5 sets of tips (2 double-flange, 3 normal rubber) and carrying case, which is cool. But more than that, the sound quality blows JVC Marshmallows out of the water. The bass actually has some definition and depth, and the mids-highs are nothing to complain about either.
Definitely recommended as portable earphones that you can not worry about losing or whatever. I'll be using these every day during my walk to/from/between classes the rest of this year.

I love my klipsch. I find the oval tips to be very comfortable, i've been wearing them all day at work for ~6 hours and had no problems. And i prefer the bass :D And i just got the m50's and they have collected no dust as i have not taken them off yet! Then again i'm sure the ue700s are phenomenal, i just prefer overear headphones when i'm at the computer and such.
Just threw on my HD201's for a laugh. Immediately put my m50's back on.

I also think the Kilpsch oval ear tip design works fine, though it wasn't specifically on an S4 that I tried it. Maybe it won't please those with circular ear canals.
I'm not much a fan of the kinda bloaty bass on the Meelectronics M9, but for under $20 I'm not sure what else compares. The sound signature is on the fun side (V-ish IIRC, but it's been a while) and pretty inoffensive overall, especially for those accustomed to bloaty bass. I think it's a great cheap pair to not worry about babying. Also, it's probably a great product to recommend to the so-called average consumer--or "uninitiated," whichever you prefer.

Mid-Fi all the way.
Have Vsonic R02Pro II's for public, ATH-AD400's for FPS Gaming, Alessandro MS-1's for Music, and Beyer DT250's whenever its noisy around the house.
Also have a Maverick D1 DAC/Amp coming in the mail in a few days =)

i might give the M50s another try. can't quite remember how they sounded after all. just remember them being obnoxiously heavy compared to IEMs so dunno maybe i was just made for IEMs.

I'm of the opinion that build quality matters. Telling someone "be more careful" is not going to change the user behavior. The solution is to get a more durable product or change the usage processes/paradigm fundamentally in a way that does not stress them as much. e.g. if you're breaking straight-plug IEMs by leaving them wrapped around a portable player, get a short extension cord with an L-shaped jack to plug into the player (of course, leaving them wrapped around is still not ideal, but if that's what you want to do, that's what you're going to do).
How have you broken them and where have they broken? Also, which models have you broken, as a reference? IEMs are just pretty small, so they're often not very durable. Some are considerably more durable than others because of better materials or superior strain reliefs, but I'm not sure if you could call any model a tank.

Do you prefer buds or IEMs? Imo, look for brands with a low warranty rate (Not UE >.>). Find out how your phones break and it'll be easier to find a pair that'll last. Find ones that have good strain reliefs in the buds and get ones that have an L-shaped plug.
If you want buds, you can try the Yuin PK series, they're good sounding and they're cheap enough

IEMs or ear buds would be fine. they usually break on the cord. sometimes they break at the bud, they crack etc. i am a very careless person. ive tried very hard to "take care of them" but they always seem to break.
so durability, isnt something that is measured when talking about audio devices?
