YO! massdrop.com is having a huge discount on a first edition AKG k7xx. A collaborated designed headphone from massdrop and AKG. It's supposed one of the best from the AKG line up, maybe except for the K812pro. Here's project86's review: http://www.head-fi.org/t/743280/new-release-the-k7xx-massdrop-first-edition-an-exclusive-from-massdrop-and-akg Best part is, it's well below your budget: $200 You need to make an account to purchase stuff from their site though, but I have been buying stuff from their sites for sometime now and the only complaint I have is the long shipping time. Since I have heard the AKG k712 and AKG q701 before, and own the dt990 premium and hd650, I'll give a short reply: The AKGs have good soundstage, but lack bass quantity, which isn't really fun. Maybe because the frequency is a bit flatter compared to the other headphones, which some people consider a good thing. The bass is well extended, but I would like it to be raised a few db. The k7xx should be perfect though, since the bass is raised by 3 db. Should be good for gaming and movies also. The dt990 just doesn't get much head time. The treble was a little too much at the beginning, but I've gotten use to it. I would also like a little bit more quality in the bass region from the dt990. A bit too much bass for me. The hd650 has just the right bass. It's fun and the treble isn't so high. I only pick the hd650 over the others because it sounds fun without going overboard. Plain and simple. For a more accurate headphone, I'll go for the k7xx, and I just don't listen to the dt990 much. If it matters, I think the HiFiMan he500 sounds better and is the current headphone I listen to, along with the hd800. Massdrop also have the dt990 premium on their site right now, although the dt990 pro is cheaper. Sennheiser had a 35% of all products last week and I assume there will be some discount before Christmas. Some people were able to get the hd700 for around $350, more or less. FYI, all these headphones will require an amp to sound good.

Edit: I'm considering the FiiO E12, it's a little more than I was considering spending but seems like a decent portable amp.

They (the interwebz) say that the 650's scale well with better amps, so invest in a decent one if you can. Have you personally auditioned the HD650's on multiple true desktop amps?

I've never really been that interested in Senns except for the 600 (I really don't like the HD800). It'd be cool to compare a true SS amp like a burson vs a tube amp from woo audio. There isn't a place around me that carries WA products though. This says that the e12 and hd650 can work

Anyway, I auditioned them a long time ago so my memory of the signature is fuzzy. But I think the description is pretty accurate, i.e. bass heavy, "fun", and slightly boomy. I will say that the biggest thing I remember about them is that they're -much- more comfortable than the m50s. The 80 ohm version does not require amping but they're a little too big to be "mobile" so office use is probably best.

I currently have ath-m50s (kind of, the headband is bent out of shape making them relatively unuseable without sending them in to get fixed). Thinking about just going for these. I am a big fan of bass and apparently these excel in that area. Anyone have any experience with these vs the m50s? http://slickdeals.net/f/7453652-beyerdynamic-dt770-pro-80-ohm-headphones-129-99?page=2&rpid=72401590#comments if you can go up to 199, sennheiser momentum is on sale which is almost 1/2 half

I'm curious to hear what other people think but I wasn't very impressed by the sound of the momentum. Now I did auditioned them under less than ideal conditions so maybe they're better than I remember. It's just that in general I'm pretty underwhelmed by Sennheiser closed cans.
