Hey guys, looking for some suggestions here. Skimmed the thread (ctrl+f'ed the word "comfortable") and got answers all over the place.
I'm looking for comfort first. To put it bluntly - I have a big head, big ears, and my ears stick out. Pretty image, right? So comfort is a big problem - had a pair of really tight noise canceling headphones that felt like they were crushing my ears.
Searching for something that is comfortable, has really nice bass, and is under $60 (can probably talk me into a little higher if something is REALLY good). I don't care at all about noise cancellation, and do not want anything that goes in the ear. Would prefer above the head instead of behind as well.
Was looking at these, they look comfortable, but reviews I found online don't really help it's case.
Any suggestions?

You're better off getting something else if you need something that blocks out noise. I use my portapros when I'm on the bus or metro because I want to hear everything to be aware of my surroundings. I use my IEMs when I want peace and quiet.
For best cost/isolation value, go for an IEM. I listed a few that have great sound/price/value a few pages ago in this thread.
If you don't want an IEM, a portable headphone that has pretty good isolation, sound, and comfort for its price is the panasonic rp-htx7. I recommended my gf to get them and she loves using them. I find them pretty comfortable. Isolates a ton more than the portapros (which I like), and has slightly crisper sound than the portapros. Portapros have a bassier/warmer sound.
I've heard that the jvc ha-s700 really comfortable and isolates well, but sound is average.

I don't know anything about gaming headsets... But for headphones, do you want something that sits over your ears (koss portapros), something that clips on your ears (yuin g2a or koss ksc75), or something that covers your ears (panasonic rp-htx7)?

Damn, infidels in the headphone enthusiast thread! All these posts about cheapy headphones and now headsets. Microphones on headphones--what blasphemy is this? + Show Spoiler +Though the people with the Stax, D7000, HD 650, etc. all own me ofc. x_x Sorry, I can't help either about headsets. ETT, did you check you the Best Gaming Headset thread?
edit: and as mentioned in that thread, if you are in a quiet environment and don't need a great microphone, you may be able to get away with using a normal headphone + a clip-on mic. This would expand your options, though depending on your standards of "really nice bass," I still can't think of anything comfortable in that price range.

Just got a new set up today. Ortofon's EQ-5 ---> Electronic avenues Pa2V2 Headphone amp ---> FiiO E7 USB DAC. Might do a review on head fi after 2 weeks of burn in (maybe just 1 if i get impatient)

To Evil Teletubby The headset you are looking at is TERRIBLE I used it for a good 4 months until it broke (not very durable at all) and it was horribly uncomfortable. Everyday I used it I wanted to get a new headset but since I spent money on it I wasn't just going to get rid of it. I would have to alternate after about and hour with it on because the earcups don't provide any comfort, it just feels like a hardhat is sitting around your ears. That review makes the headset sound like a dream but its a nightmare. My ears used to burn after wearing it for too long because of the lack of circulation that the headset receives.
I would not recommend this headset to anyone, especially if you are looking for comfort.
I currently own a pair of Steelseries Siberia V2 headphones and they are extremely comfortable. They have a nice head strap that conforms to your head as you put it on, and the ear cups do not close around your ears very much. You might want to try them out if they look comfortable to you.
Edit- If you don't want to spring for the V2s then you can get the regular Siberia for $50, they look to be the same headphone just probably with a little less sound quality.

Evil Teletubby: Steelseries Siberia, i was using v1 since they came out but last year my cat bite to the cable : (((((( so i would go for Siberia V2 they are so sexy and comfortable never got problem with burning ears. go to shop and try em. that was best time of my life when i own em : )

Well, I bought some Sennheiser PC161 about 2 weeks ago and I'm pretty disappointed in them. Not AWFUL, but not even close to being worth the 130$ it cost me.
Flaws : -About as far possible as noise cancelling as can be (and they are advertised as such). If anything it amplifies the sounds around me. Very annoying because the biggest reason I have headphones is noisy neighbours, which bring me to point 2... -The noise coming out of the headphones is loud to those around. If you're like me and like blasting your music at 1-2am, tough luck. I have to lower my sound considerably if I don't want everyone in the appartment complex to hear it and since I'm such a nice guy I don't like to annoy neighbours with music in the middle of the night. -The "adjustable" microphone is absolutely not adjustable. The stick is so loose, you can either keep it all the way up (IE off) or all the way down. If you try to adjust it, it just falls down by itself or with any sudden movement if you're lucky enough to get it to hold. I don't actually use ventrilo or anything so I can't comment on the quality of the microphone itself but it feels like it's too low to pick up my voice optimally. -One of the ears is already a bit loose and can be moved. Questionable durability.
All in all, the only good qualities are that they are comfy and the sound quality is good; something to be expected of ANY headphones.
2/10, don't waste your money on these.

Uh, the Sennheiser PC161 is advertised as open, i.e. intended to let sound in and out. The "noise canceling" refers to the microphone. Granted, it seems like Sennheiser's headset lineup is mostly underwhelming considering the price. I'm not a fan, but I don't have any substantial experience with them.
On a side note, Canadian prices for these kinds of things are . They're going on Amazon for $59.15 now.

Thinking about getting asking for/getting some headphones this christmas to use with my desktop/listening by myself. I already have some klipsch image s4s for traveling so i'm looking for something for an upgrade from my hd201s for around the house. I wanna keep it under 75$ and i listen to a lot of trance/electronic music as well as hip hop. I also love bass. Any recommendations?
|
Btw, if I want to split the headphone and mic duty, what would be a high quality way to go for the mic?
|
Alright TL, you're my source of all information.
I have 150 bucks for any headphones, any brand for Christmas. What do I get?

Does anyone own a Sennheiser HD 650? If so, how're you liking it? New headphones are kinda on the top of my Christmas list

Any new recommendations for something in the $100-200 range with an emphasis on comfort I imagine with glasses, heavy-clamping headphones with stiffer pads would be problematic? In general, these are good headphones in the price range that are widely regarded to be comfortable. All have pretty huge ear cups: Beyerdynamic DT-770 (c), DT-880 Denon AH-D2000 (c) Audio-Technica AD700 (o), AD900 (o), A700 (c), A900 (c) AKG K501 (o), K601 (o) (c) denotes closed, i.e. sound-isolating; (o) denotes open. In terms of sound, the Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro/80 ohms is regarded as the best edition. Other than that, get the lower-impedance version of Beyers unless you have a powerful source (amp). A few of those listed may be over $200 sometimes or usually, but you can sometimes find deals for them to be in budget. The ATH-AD700 is the cheapest, and is usually under $100 by a little. The AT models clamp pretty lightly, so light that some people complain they fall off easily. I tried the AD700 before, and it would start sliding slightly if I leaned my head back all the way. edit: Show nested quote +On November 27 2010 15:18 Blind wrote: I recently bought the HD555 and they're working great so far on my mp3 player. They're very comfortable. But when I use them on my desktop, I hear a low humming/siren noise when I'm running sc2. Any ideas? This noise persists even when I mute my computer, as long as sc2 is open.
Could there be some kind of interference? I'm plugging into the headphone jack in front of my tower. Any ideas on how I can fix this? Try the back connection. It's very common for the wire from the header to the front audio jack to pick up interference, which is what you're hearing. Does the sound occur when playing other games or otherwise stressing the GPU? My guess is it may be caused by GPU activity. Of course, you may still pick up interference off of the back connection too, regardless of the cause. If you're currently listening at a pretty low system volume level, you could try using an impedance adapter, or adding resistors to the line. This would make everything quieter, including the noise. Then you would up the system volume to compensate for that being quieter. (Normally people only do this for sensitive IEMs, which are a lot louder than the relatively easy-to-drive HD555.)
Wow thank you so much

I currently have Sennheiser HD280 Pros. I have used Shure IEM's, but currently I just want headphones. I listen to electronic/indie/alt/classic rock. Bass is not that big of a factor for me. These will only be used at home. Comfort is pretty important since I will be wearing these for a long period of time. Isolation isn't really a big deal.

@Stoids: See my above post for headphones in that price range that are comfortable.
On a related side note, how does everyone feel about getting headphones used? Aside from finding the occasional great deal from quick sales or retailers going out of business and liquidating, you can find decent deals at head-fi's "for sale" subforum, for example. It's usually something like 75% of original retailer price (which is usually way under MSRP of course, or you're getting ripped) for something in mint or near-mint condition. I figure that the head-fi demographic is likely to own several headphones and treat them all well, so I've bought from a user there in the past.

I've got Shure 440s...love it to death.

I have the new 650's that have the super bright treble. BTW the 650's need a good amp to drive them. (not the one's with the bundle , they'll sound terrible) The HD 650's are a good upgrade if you've been in the headphone scene for quite a while and have been dying for an upgrade. There're several amps that can drive these but MOST of them are a bit expensive. I'm currently using a darkvoice 336i tube amp and for me , it's the way to go. I bought them for about 400 bucks for my birthday and I'm not regretting even one bit.
K about the sound. The older HD 650's don't have harsh trebles but we , the buyers of the new distributed hd 650's noticed that they sound different with the old one that were released a few years ago. Generally , the HD 650's treble is a bit too bright and sometimes it really hurts your head from the imbalance distribution of the quality of sound. Mid and Highs sound perfect but for me , the mid sound kinda laid back on some songs or generally on some genres. But if you're ready to buy a good headphone with a decent headphone amp I assure you that you wont get wrong this these.

Pinkie/NIIINO - Thanks for the suggestions backing each other up. That actually looks like a pretty good set, if not a little higher than I wanted to pay. Any chance there is anything comparable for a little less, or is that really my best bet?
