Thread Rules 1. This is not a "do my homework for me" thread. If you have specific questions, ask, but don't post an assignment or homework problem and expect an exact solution. 2. No recruiting for your cockamamie projects (you won't replace facebook with 3 dudes you found on the internet and $20) 3. If you can't articulate why a language is bad, don't start slinging shit about it. Just remember that nothing is worse than making CSS IE6 compatible. 4. Use [code] tags to format code blocks.

on a related topic... It is fascinating the lengths to which organizations will go to stop creators from getting officially credited for their work. They do this to shield their employees from lucrative outside offers. As far back as the 70s Atari and Intellvision did this. A dispute over game makers receiving credit for their work is how Activision was born.

With lockdowns and remote work getting popular I logged in to my LinkedIn for the first time in 2 months and I've had ~70 job offers... Previously it would be like 3-5/month. Job offers or interview invites? I think of those differently.

I don't really, it's been 6 years now since last time I went to an interview and was not offered a job (I did decline some, but wasn't refused myself). But I mostly choose stuff that's interesting to me and have no desire to work at FAANG or FAANG like place (what I have now is the closest I want to comfortably get to this kind of stuff and I'm not sure yet if I like it or not).

Especially with random recruiters there is a big difference. A job offer after an interview that is well below market rate is just a waste of time.

I never respond to offers without rates. Most offers I get have the rates and it seems they've been going up recently.

I don't respond to offers without rates either, but it appears to be by far the majority. And usually just headhunters trying to collect scalps. Pretty irritating really. In general, I am not very impressed by Linkedin. But I also haven't put a lot of effort into my profile.

Most people who message don't even say where/what the job is and half the time it is an admin or PM related instead of an architect/developer position that I wouldn't even want. I don't think I've ever had someone include a rate, but I don't pay much attention to them anymore either because it was a waste of my time. I'd vote StackOverflow as my favorite job posting place when I was looking.

I do get a lot of spam headhunter stuff but there are plenty of legitimate offers I'm getting too.

Since we didnt have rises last year (due to covid) i am expecting a large one this time. If i wont get it i am changing employer. Going to refresh LinkedIn today. My company froze salary increases for this year (with exceptions for those who changed roles), but replaced it with bonus payments at 6 and 12 months that are supposed to add up to what you would've got as an increase anyway. CEO even said at an end of year meeting last year that if the company does well over the next 6 months, he wants people banging on his door asking for bigger bonuses haha. My boss put me forward for a pay rise anyway though, which I got! And I still get the bonuses this year! And then a week or two later my boss had a major stroke so mixed end to the year. :

Google told me I need to change the settings to "allow less secure apps" in order for me to actually use this script successfully (and granted, it worked). However, now I'm in this wormhole I barely understand where I'm trying to figure out if I can make my script a bit more talkative with the gmail servers so that it will think it's a "secure app". I'm guessing I need to encrypt my username and password when I'm sending those to the server? If not, what would be the thing I need to do - if it can be done. I'm using python, code is very simple: #some code before the sending of the email with open("file", "r") as the_msg: server = smtplib.SMTP('smtp.gmail.com:587') server.starttls() server.login(username, password) server.sendmail(fromaddr, toaddr, the_msg.read()) server.quit() If this code could be made less ugly (or safer) please say so, I'm a total noob and I don't know if I'm setting myself up to be vulnerable or not. Edit: ok, seems like the starttls bit secures the connection, is that all it takes? Even if I'm working secure, the larger question about secure app verification still stands.

Just because you *send* the data through an encrypted connection (which as you noted, starttls() does), doesn't mean your app is secure. It's clear that you need to save your username and password in clear text for this to work, which means anybody with access to this app, has access to your username and password. That makes it insecure. I am not sure about what Google's API offers for regular accounts, but there's google's oauth library which allows you to connect it more securely. I just haven't a clue if that is only for their cloud platform stuff, or also for email. A quick google seems to indicate you should be using that for email too: https://mailtrap.io/blog/send-emails-with-gmail-api/
