"The agency also claims 60 years of US sanctions have caused a loss of $US13.7 trillion by 2005, while property losses were estimated at $US16.7 trillion."
Sanctions were brought upon by themselves, tbh. I can't say we had a true purpose there for the war, but without us being there who would know if anything starcraft related would exist if we didn't intervene?

Surely Sfydjkim isn't suggesting that the sanctions against North Korea, and therefore the United States, are responsible for the terrible terrible damage done to the Korean people by Kim's government.

Yeah, I initially was going to write Stalin since they do have alot in common, but Kim Jong-Il's military policy makes me think Hitler pre-WW2. Ultimately its apples and oranges comparing any of the three, and it was intended to be inflammatory/funny rather than a serious scholarly comparison lol. The whole declaring himself "Supreme leader" thing also makes me think Hitler more than Stalin for some reason.

Given that it's still war between South and North Korea (a war that North Korea started) it's pretty natural that US, being an ally of South Korea, has sanctions against North Korea.

I wasn't defending anything, it's merely a cause/effect relationship where North Korean leadership made a choice to ignore the threat of sanctions. It was their own mistake. The US is the big dog in this situation, and you don't piss off the big dog unless you want to get bitten. The big dog is going to do whats best for itself anyways because its the big dog and whether or not the big dog is an asshole or doing the right thing is subjective.
I don't really know enough about the entire fiasco to defend sanctioning a country to the point of people losing their lives. All I do know is that I believe in democracy and the market economy and am not overly fond of a leader who is willing to let his people live in poverty while he dumps money into the military.

I agree that (non-military) sanctions tend to strengthen isolationist regimes rather than weakening them, Kim Jong Il will smuggle in his luxury goods anyway. Some contact with the world would make it more difficult to brainwash the north koreans.
This doesn't excuse the leadership of the country, they are people who know very well what they are doing to their population in exchange for power.
Korea is USA+Russia broken toy. I don't find this funny, because probably the estimate loss is accurate. A whole country with a frozen development because of 3rd parties. Serious crap.
My marketing professor did one of those once-in-a-life-time North Korean tours. We spent a lot of time in class talking about what's going on over there.
Really, the whole country is so far behind everywhere else, but the citizens don't know it. Cell phones? Yeah right. Kim Jong Il has them completely brainwashed with all sorts of false facts about the US. Most of them are convinced that we're constantly considering invading them because we're some sort of axis of evil that's jealous of their prosperity.
It's gonna be really interesting when Kim dies. One of his sons has already defected out of the country, and there's speculation that his son still in the country might be along the same mindset. It'd be crazy to see a whole nation suddenly exposed to all the technological advancements of the past 15 years.

when I started to check information about n. korea I tought they must have some sort of hi-tech labs and that they must have some advanced technologies because of the nuclear research. But then I saw some documentary movies and saw eg. their hospital in capital city - there were no medical machines (only shitty beds) altough I would expect some - I didnt realise until then that they are in such a poverty.
I wonder if the university professors in n. korea are aware of the fact, that there is something wrong or that this ideology is so fucked up.

It would probably sound more like reparations. The essence of the story is "you've done something wrong but we're strong and we're not afraid to call you out on it in front of everybody".
I don't know why people are quoting GDP and stuff. It's obviously a calculation of damages that have occurred since the war and they definitely aren't expecting to receive it. They just wanted to make a powerful statement to the international community. It's a reaction to the blockade and all of this talk about imposing more sanctions.

This "why me, officer" stuff doesn't help. Foreign powers created the situation in Korea. You can't divide a country with that strong of a national identity and expect there to be no repercussions. Kim Il-sung and Syngman Rhee both wanted, first and foremost, to reunify and rule the entire peninsula.

Your statement was true 50 years ago. But the stubborn actions of their dictator are the reason why N.K is still isolated, underdeveloped, poor country. When you spend a higher percentage of your GDP on the military than the US and Russia, while your people are dying because of the lack of food, than you have clearly set your priorities wrong. When you have a cripple economy, taking actions that piss off some of your biggest potential trading partners is certainly wrong (like building fucking atom bombs). And when you intentionally make your citizens poorer than they already are by wiping out their savings, you obviously don't give a fuck about your people. So blaming 3rd parties about the situation in N.K. is simply out of date.
This claim is both logical and rightful. I am so tired of people talking down on my country when they have no idea what they are talking about. How is sending chinese ppl to world cup for nk relevant to sanctioning nk?
Way I see it is why is the weakest country in world got sanctions on them? what possibly can they do?
Americas war against communism costing lots of lives :/
I wonder if you even clicked the spoiler.
They're NOT the weakest military country. Sanctions are design to punish a country for outrageous behavior. WHATEVER the country does in response is the countries FAULT, not others (that not to say North Korea behavior towards it's own population is a guilt game..). Trying to somehow put the blame on the UN (NOT THE US, I don't know why some people are picking that country out when the UN has to agree on sanctions, and guess what that INCLUDES CHINA).
Some countries have taken a lesson from WW2 in that you don't appease a rouge nation, into letting it do anything it wants.
Kim Jong-il has destroyed almost every opportunity to help the population, he doesn't care. It cannot be exaggerated on how that government has treated and brainwashed their own population.
Oh by the way, China a communist Nation and shows disapproval of North Korean actions, but its not like that government wants a exodus of North Koreans coming in.
In any event North Korean actions are all a game for them.

This is an insane demand from North Korea, it's not like they had any interest in trading with other nations anyway so the sanctions are pretty much a formality because they have no money to do business and (almost) no other countries are willing to do business there. If they're gonna be mad they should be mad at Russia for setting them up with communism and royally screwing them over these past 60 odd years -_-
Why do people actually believe that guy who posts is from North Korea and respond to him? There are probably only a few thousand North Koreans who have computers let alone have an unfiltered internet connection, a copy of starcraft and the time to come post on these forums.
Why was the 2nd guy banned, but misrah not? Didn't they do the same thing? Seems completely unfair. Whatever.
North Korea needs to stop being insane already and admit they're in a complete shit hole, they can not sustain them selves like this forever, it's bound to fall out and fail completely eventually. They need to grow up and quit torturing their own people.

The estimate is probably accurate? You do realize that 75 trillion is more money that all the countries of the world have -- COMBINED! -- don't you?
And if the North Korean government was sincere in its efforts to create a peaceful and prosperous state...then don't you think 50 years is an awfully long time for them to remain so poor and broken?
The shit that happened in Vietnam in the name of stopping the spread of communism was probably more destructive and was certainly more recent, yet their economy is 7 times larger (even though the population is only 4 times larger) and the life expectancy is 8 years longer.
Surely you don't think the North Korean government is saintly, do you?

North Korea is so ridiculous. They make constant demands even though nobody is going to enforce it. Even China's patience with the damn place is wearing thin.
And North Korea would have money if they didn't spend it all on a hideous hotel (in their completely closed to the public country) and more recently a hideous statue in west africa.

Uh, if you're talking about the African Renaissance statue in Senegal, a North Korean company was paid by the Senegalese government to build that. And the Ryugyong Hotel only ended up being a waste of money because construction halted due to lack of funds. An Egyptian company started working on it again a couple of years ago. The country isn't really closed but as a tourist you would only be able to go to a handful of places.

that's it. I hope this gets out and we can talk about it.
very interesting, I won't begin to act like I know anything about being inside NK but from what we are all told they wouldn't have access to outside world. Of course there has been crazier things.
I googled North Korea Chat and all these channels came up for people to chat with NKs but none of them had any NKs in them.
I have a book called Pyongyang; a journey in North Korea by Guy Delsie, a cartoonist who worked there for a while and in that he tries to get one of them to read 1984 and they won't talk about it.
Well, if that dude is North Korean, this is of course interesting. I have my doubts though, which make it really hard for me to comment on it. Assuming he is actually from NK there's one thing that strikes me... You seem to carry out the conversation as a monologue where you're basically telling him your point of view. While it may be correct, it is like a slap in the face to the North Korean. You're bascially ripping away everything he thinks as evident, which is a way too offensive approach to achieve any kind of conversation.
edit: Not to say I wouldn't do the same. It's basically like briefly meeting an alien for the first time - You have so much to tell and so little time.
I'm sorry man, I got really excited, I have a BA in poli-sci and I have been studying NK for years, you're right that I was too agressive, but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that you can't strip away years of indoctrination in a 20 minute chess game. But if I give him a glimpse of the comparative views maybe he can go to linktv.org and see his news channel up against the others.
Edit: my ip comes up international for some reason, I'm close to the border

USA would do well to take your advise aswell lol
Anyway, just because Korean leaders are dickheads does not mean that the sanctions should be implemented. By creating the sanctions they are isolating the people from the rest of the world an thereby making it very hard for the citizens to overthrow the government since they truly believe that they live in one of the better countries on this planet.
Haha. Nord Korea is so weird. I highly recommend the documentary "Det Røde Kapel" about a journalist, a comedian and a spastic that travel into Nord Korea. It is a bit to much but extremity funny and so Fucked.

I disagree with your logic. Stricter sanctions would push the country to the edge of collapse faster, while reduced sanctions would reward a racist, tyrannical regime by relieving it of the immediate threats of rebellion and of its own military disbanding. The accounts of North Korea are strongly reminiscent of 1984 and most other apocalyptic, totalitarian novels you could name. At this point outright invasion of the country would probably still be better for the people of North Korea than allowing North Koreans to be ruled by there own government.

I play blitz chess at chess.com to pass the time at work and for the first time ever I came into contact with a North Korean, the locations are based on IP so it can't be faked. But do you think this guy is genuine? the convo is very freaky.
I tried to bridge the gap with sc2 and he spoke again, lol.

Well I read an online article about a german who had an IT-company residing in NK (only german but I'll link it anyway: http://www.taz.de/1/archiv/print-archiv/printressorts/digi-artikel/?ressort=sw&dig=2010/06/22/a0004 ). He said that he, as a foreigner, was allowed to have global internet/telephone at home (costing 250euro/month). He was forbidden to get something similiar at his company (the employees werent allowed to possibly have access to it). Maybe it was someone like this.

Interesting, but this definately sounded like a national, unless German businessmen say things like, "Nobody wants war, South Korea wants it"
It's just another ploy to make the americans seem like bad guys and of course they know that we'll say no to that and look even worse to the NK people.

The USA doesn't have half a nation of people starving, although yes I agree military budget needs shrinkkkkkk.
N. Korea is like a little kid. Cries foul and threatens. Everyone sighs and facepalms and gives a little. N. Korea shuts up and goes back into a shell. Repeat this process every couple months/years.
In my opinion they do actually have a legitimate claim. So do the Cubans. American foreign policy is a bunch of bullshit. But of course giving them the money would be ridiculous and impossible.
Great...another temporary North korea crisis. Wait for them to launch a missle over Tokyo or something like that then we give them some rescource so they won't try anything stupid. Happens every year, and it will happen every year until we decide to do terrible terrible damage to them.
This instantly reminded me of an episode of The Sopranos where some blacks went after a Jewish recording company for "compensation", and the owner looked at the guys and said, "What are you talking about? My people were being oppressed while yours were still riding Zebras. Get outa here!"
Anyone see the episode of "Colbert Report" where he addresses this issue? I found it very funny that he said "I will give you the money if you come here to America and come on my show to get it." Of course he was joking, but i believe that even if he was serious (and had the money) Kim Jong Il would never do so...
couldn't find the video on youtube, so i can't link for reference =(
