w0w both vids were definitely moving indoor kite flying... thats definitely going on my to do list and the 2nd video, maaaaaaan that was great, sweet post!
sigh. its so hard to judge the kite flying thing. if a regular person had done that with no pretty music in the background it would've been laughed off the stage, it really wasn't that impressive
I mean I feel for the kid, I'm not exactly sure how hard dealing with epilepsy is, but in the grand scheme of things there's just a time and place for everything, and I think letting him on the show for a mediocre talent just because he's disabled is unfair
my sister's autistic but she can do sick cartwheels, awesome LONG handstands, and finish I-spy's in like 10 seconds, but we're not gonna put her on the show because her talent's aren't as good as other peoples.
still good for him that he was brave enough to do it in front of that crowd.
That kite video was the stupidest thing I have ever seen on a talent show. That is an exaggeration, but it was still stupid. For the record, I didn't watch any of his intro video.
The singers aren't bad really, but this has got to be one of the weakest talent pools in the shows history.
contrary to popular belief, it takes skill for that. yeah i should just remake "the best" with "my favorites" . Indeed the kid wasn't one of the best but was a pretty thoughtful and emotional act. Still think there are some other acts i have prolly miss.

This.
No offense to the disabled people, but you gotta realize that 99% of those cheers and him moving forward in the competition is entirely based on the fact that he's diagnosed with epilepsy. No discredit to his hobby or anything, it's pretty unique and I fully believe him when he says that it helps him relax and stuff, but c'mon.
This show absolutely kills me sometimes between the dance and song acts. I -really- get bored by those big group dance acts. There's already American Idol for singers and So You Think You Can Dance for dancers. This show should be more about people that can do other things (magic, martial arts, acrobats, daredevil stuff, instrumentals, uber micro, etc), in my opinion.
Also, while I'm raging, it annoys me that 95% of the acts that go through are disabled people, veterans, recovering addicts, homeless people, children or old people. The only way to make it on this show is to have a sob story the audience can feel sorry for. I still watch it though
dunno really what are some people complaining, the kid just advanced to the next round like many shitty acts that also manage to advance, he didn't win anything just an airplane ticket. So no reason to flame the guy

I've tried out for american idol 3 times. there is a pre round, before the round in front of the judges, where they weed out the mediocre people (aka THOUSANDS of auditions) then they let through the:
this kid falls in the 3rd category, there were probably better talents that didn't make it to this round, but didn't have the tear jerking properties that this kid had
otherwise it'd be 6 to 10k people filing in front of the judges, which would take MONTHS for one city

Maybe I'm just soulless but if you take away the music and epilepsy that's just a kid with a kite.
Count me in on this as well. I thought it was a moving story, but on a talent show, he's just a kid with a kite and some moving music.
My thoughts exactly. A kid with a disability trying their hand at finding something they can truly enjoy and live by is a very amazing thing. However, in this case it really isn't that entertaining to watch, and what you're really watching is a kid with a disability find himself and be happy.

the ones to blame here are the judges then, why would you bash the kid? he's doing his thing as shitty as it may be to viewers, and yes he can be a viewer magnet.considering his Background story, personality, tear-jerker act, etc. Don't really know why im defending this kid, as i say i label the act as my "favorite"s since it was an "emotional" piefce of act I didn't say he's going to win. In fact he will not.

Never thought I'd agree so much with monion. Seriously, this. Before I even scrolled down these were my thoughts...
Kite boy - Pretty sure everyone realizes this is a joke, and is 90% music, 9% sympathy/pity, 1% anything interesting.
Singing - I can't remember what show it was... maybe it was even this one, or something very very similar before... there was a guy who had a keyboard/piano keys, very large on the ground. He would play them by juggling balls into the keys, and actually played a full piece. He was up against some fat woman who sang. Guess which one won overwhelmingly? I've never watched these trash shows since.

This. So many interesting and truly unique acts get passed over for completely average singers (I'm looking at you, Kevin Skinner).
I'm really excited to see more from Fighting Gravity. Definitely one of the most unique things I've seen anywhere. (EDIT: Should've read the whole thread, didn't realize it's been done. First time I'd seen it though. I think it was still really well choreographed and had a great atmosphere though.)
To be honest I wasn't very impressed by the Maricar chick. Believe me I'm the first one to have his head turned by a chick in a latex outfit, but her actual talent didn't seem all that impressive to me, and it seems like the catsuit is just a gimmick anyway.
Not to dilute the thread but so far this has been my favorite anything from an X's Got Talent show:
This was great! Love! War! Love ones long forgotten and metallica! This is the kind of thing I'd like to see more of. Dime a dozen singers can go fly a kite.

So you try to get on a show where you would be singing in front of hundreds of thousands of people but refuse to post a video that would be watched by 10 people. Hmmmm, I still think the guy that sang, the guy who grew up poor and loves his grandma, should win!
LMAO! I thought it was something original. I honestly never seen this before. I'm changing my vote now. Thanks.
I don't know what the show is called in japan, but there is at least one where they have team compete in this kinda things, like the matrix ping pong. There are some really awesome vids on youtube from that one.
They didn't think out the whole concept by themselves, but probably the first one on the 'got talent' show I think
Other two were good singers obviously, but if they were playing a bar you'd walked into, you'd look at them say "hey they're pretty good" then buy a beer and forget about them.
Common guys, I cannot agree more with psa, we all know he's not going to win but who cares really ? It was a good performance, wether the emotion comes from music or epilepsy, it's the same. People like him, that's the point of america's got talent. Stop hating.

No, not Jennifer Hudson, she played on Dreamgirls. The Black lady that sings in the subway is the mother of Gaby Sidibe, who is the overweight star in Precious. Basically, both mother and daughter come out of nowhere and blow everyone away with acting, and now with the singing. Thats a pretty talented family if you ask me.
i agree with the general consensus about the kite-flying one... a lot of the acts are just plain stupid.... this show should be retitled, america's got problems

I'm really kind of tired of sympathy votes ruling this show. They're not even the best singers on the show, let alone the best act. I was more impressed by the kid from Lousiana and the Subway lady. Their condition is very sad and tragic, for sure, but it's kind of frustrating to see acts get into the higher levels based on how sad their lives are.

This is probably the first thing we have agreed upon.
Someone had to say it. I cannot believe some of the acts made it through to Vegas. Meh, give them their 15 minutes of fame.
The kite thing wasn't too bad. the music was awful... but!
Lets do a quick analysis. Having a disability helps in these competitions, the background story is compelling. epilepsy. it sucks. it's not fair.
Now flying indoor kites with music.
Yeah music makes stuff better, but unless anybody here flies indoor kites and can say its easy. i wouldn't discount that as a talent. it looks cool and it looks easy. a bunch of things look easy when people are good at it. still give them a chance, it might be a talent.
I don't think people here are specifically saying that it's not a talent, I'm sure it is. Hell, I have trouble keeping a kite up in the air even when I'm outside. I think it's more the fact that it felt like 90% of the reason that the kid made it through this prelim round is due to his having a disability, and it seems like it's a common trend for these types of competition shows.
omgz he's flying kites with kite magic since there is not air !!! internetzz where is your soul !!!1 i thought cute kittens with captionz was the number one internet meme 8(((
Once again im not defending the guy. I DID NOT SAID he will win, as specify BELOW the video that it was a touching performance and is up there in my personal list. I can't believe this is still going lol.
That Michael Grimm fellow had a really amazing voice. But that Fighting Gravity dancing thing was like the sickest thing ever. I didn't even know what was happening until the lights came on and revealed the people in the black.

I'm sure the whole world is laughing at Canada for America's got talent.
It's one of my pet peeves when people talk about the "whole word" laughing at a nation because of a TV show. I mean seriously? Do you think that a nation is defined by its reality shows and entertainment sector in general? If so, Japan would be one fucked up nation. Our everyday lives are nothing like what we watch for entertainment value. Do people expect the average person to watch a classical symphony and opera every day?
Just about every nation with free, uncontrolled media has retarded, jingoistic, and provocative reality shows.
In the same vein as the kite flying kid, check out this kid who sings for mentally disabled elderly people:
He may be nervous, but I still think he should stick to the elderly homes.
Sometimes I think producers train up some people and then stick them into the show. For example:
Apparently they are dirt poor and dance in the streets, but somehow they are able to come up with a custom mix of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". Plus, they are filmed in streets that are implied to be the streets that they dance in.
I don't like when people talk about their conditions before they act. Maybe I can understand after if it's relevant to the talent you're doing, but I think it sways the judges from not buzzing out bad acts. Those two little girls with the lung disease I would of definitely buzzed out if I didn't hear their sob story beforehand, but whatever.
This show annoys me so much how they spend half the show showing shitty performances, and as soon as someone really good gets on stage, they keep changing the camera angle to look at the host and the judges and the crowd. God damnit, I want to see the act for myself too!

I don't know if they will win but they should try to go to the show America's best dancing crew ( I don't know if the show is still running because I'm not from the USA and i see the show when he is translate)
Yeah no offense but epilepsy isn't THAT bad, although obviously it's more than a simple annoyance. Plenty of great figures in history have had epilepsy and they were able to do extraordinary things. The kite-flowing, honestly, is not... extraordinary at all. Grimm guy has a pretty typical skill for a singer; the only good one was the subway singer in the OP.

Two people, one of which is VERY VERY VERY close to me have epilepsy. It doesn't make you retarded or socially inept. Nothing against the kid himself, he's just doing what he likes, but fuck the exploitative people who put together and watch the show for this type of thing.
in times like this, its easy to find the person to blame

Other countries must be laughing so hard at us right now. This show is pathetic imo
I have nothing but love for the US for doing their part to keep Piers Morgan off British television as much as possible. On behalf of a nation, I thank you.
Sorry, but IMO this show is just so bad compared to Britain's Got Talent. Plus it doesn't have Simon, although it does have Piers. It just doesn't have as many good acts IMO.
But my main point with this post is about the general public. How retarded are they? There's some kid who talks all weird and stuff and plays on the emotions of people who want to believe that they're seeing something beautiful when they're not. It's a kid flying a kite. I have to agree with the posters above me that say this is in no way exceptional.
Go learn how to fly an indoor Kite, and then tell me how much 'talent' it takes compared to many of the other acts that have been on this show's history. Not only that, singing GOOD requires more talent than this, and I can already say I've seen way too many singers and dancers on these shows.
Give me more amazing acts like the quick change artists please.
i hate the camera work. i don't give a damn how the guy on the side of the stage feels, and i dont need to see the gaping mouths of audience members. its like they are trying to tell me how to feel about certain acts, instead of just showing the act and letting the audience decide for themselves. also, sometimes i can barely even see whats going on because they move it around so much >_<
oh come on. Ive seen those japanese guys years ago too but this was still really cool and very different. Japanese thingy was incredibly funny, this was pure awesome because it was a very good musical/dancing performance. Plus in this one you dont actually see the dudes in black which makes it a lot better.

It wasn't really different. It's essentially the same type of act. The only difference is that in the Japanese version the lights are on since it's like a variety show whereas in AGT they just turned the lights off and used black lights. It's still cute, but unoriginal and really not that great or impressive...
I think you're letting yourself be impressed a bit too easily. There was nothing challenging at all about the act be it the "dancing" or the choreography. Pretty much any group of people could get together and organize the same thing within a day or two so long as you give them the equipment. I don't see why this kind of act has any place in a talent competition. It requires little to no talent at all. But then again, that seems to be the case with a lot of the acts featured on America's Got Talent...
I stopped watching this show pretty much for this reason. It's way more about entertainment value and exploiting sob stories than actually focusing on difficulty, creativity, or legitimate skill. I suppose that's what it comes down to in any popularity contest, though... especially when you're trying to compare so many different types of acts. I would watch Idol or ABDC over this show any day...
I don't like Michael Grimm, he strikes me as fake.
And that hat annoyed me as well, it just seemed fake too. I was kinda surprised and glad at the same time when the woman in the jury asked him to take the hat off.

Plus, they are filmed in streets that are implied to be the streets that they dance in.
Sometimes I think posters bring up some conspiracy theory and stick them into a thread.
Really, unless all these guys are great actors and act amazingly emotional, you can see that this means a lot to them, and that's what sealed the deal of them being poor.
i dont think those two girls were really good. They were ok. But I hate it when they talk about what problems they have and get sympathy. Same with the kite kid. No offense, it gets boring but after playing the pity card, you seem like an asshole buzzing them. I thought fighting gravity was really good though.
It's a known fact that producers do this sort of thing on some reality shows. The one that really sticks out in my mind is Last Comic Standing. Now I'm not saying that dance group was planted there, but we got to be weary. I've participated in several reality shows and really, it's not all what it seems to be.

Oh I see, I'm impressed too easily lolol. I happened to like the choreography, I guess I'm kinda stupid because of that huh? You say you need no talent at all... performing it might not be hard but you gotta think of it first. You could compare that to music, most of the beatles songs (or > 90% of all music you hear on the radio really) are pretty easy to play/perform, but writing it and having the idea - that's the hard part. You say that it's essentially the same type of act... Uhm not really, one is a parody/comedy act, the other is a "dancing" act. Just because they use the same technique doesnt make it the same. Otherwise you might as well say that a musical is the same as an Opera. Also The Beatles and Metallica both use essentially the same equipment. And they might just use the same exact finger picking technique in some songs!! Guess there's nothing creative about them then.
The fact of the matter is it's been done countless times. Other than that the beat was awfully slow and that makes it much easier to get the timings right and coordinate it. There was nothing mind blowing about what they did. They kept the act fairly simple and it worked. Good for them. The thing is what are they going to do next round, and the round after that? They said it themselves, they aren't dancers, but engineers. They know the physics and math, but at the end of the day can they really mix up the pot more? Guess we'll have to find out.
If I were a judge I would move them to Vegas, but I would tell them "You guys will have to turn up the heat and show us something absolutely mind blowing."
If you only care about difficulty and about doing something that has never been done before in any similar fashion whatsoever then you have a point. But if that was the case then any of these musicians shouldnt even be allowed, there's nothing groundbreaking about their music and they can sing well but so can millions of other americans.
Did I say it completely blew my mind and was the most revolutionising thing I've ever seen? No I didnt, I just thought it was really cool to watch. You guys remind me of people who watch action flicks only to bitch about everything that is 'unlogical'. You dont have to like it but to be like that guy and tell me I'm impressed too easily just because I liked something? lol, get off your freakin horse.
Not to be a douche or anything but is it just me or is the Connor Doran video kinda... Meh? I mean, It wasn't bad, but I just don't see what so amazing about it.
Edit: yeah I should have read the thread before I posted.
I would watch that show (at least on yt) if it wasnt for that dumb wannabe ghetto nigga trying to make a joke every now and then. Seriously, his jokes are so bad they make me want to cry : (

Yeah, jesus christ, this.
Two people, one of which is VERY VERY VERY close to me have epilepsy. It doesn't make you retarded or socially inept. Hell, it doesn't really prevent them from doing much of anything, especially with the medicine you can take for it nowadays. Yes, there are certain times it will get to them... but really? There are many different kinds of epilepsy, some are very severe and horrible for the person both mentally and physically. You don't know what kind that kid is suffering from. Exploiting his condition for a cheap sob story is despicable in any case, but don't trivialize how horrible epilepsy can be.
