Quakes aren't rare along the ring of fire. Anything this strong though in SoCal is pretty damn rare though.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/04/04/mexico.earthquake/index.html?hpt=T1 (CNN) -- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Baja California in northwestern Mexico on Sunday, shaking the ground at least as far away as Los Angeles, California, the U.S. Geological Survey and witnesses reported. The quake struck at 3:40 p.m. PT and was centered about 175 kilometers (110 miles) east-southeast of Tijuana, according to the USGS. Chandeliers swung and water sloshed around in swimming pools in the Los Angeles suburbs, witnesses reported, while posters to Twitter reported feeling the quake in Phoenix, Arizona.

It then started to shake pretty violently for a few more secs. Lasted pretty long.

In all seriousness, I think its more willingness to broadcast about these sorts of things, because it makes a good narrative to drive 24hour news programming.

From my (very limited) experiance I think the strong earthquakes usually come first and then weaker ones follow. I've never (again very limited) experianced anythin opposite to that.

I think that mostly you are more aware of them happening since you have been living the past 10 years while before that you were too young to care.

Alright so I just busted out a ruler on this map: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/US10/27.37.-120.-110.php As far as I can tell LA/Pheonix are both about 200 miles from the epicenter. Where the heck you get 800 miles from.
