In a somewhat worrying piece of news, security firm Symantec has released the top search terms by kids in 2009. Topping the lists: “YouTube”, “Google”, “Facebook”, “sex” and “porn”.
While that result set might not be surprising in the teen search rankings, it’s interesting to note that “porn” ranks 4th in the “7 and under” category, receiving more searches than “Club Penguin” and “Webkinz (Webkinz)“. Meanwhile, “sex” is fourth for teens and tweens alike. Facebook (Facebook), YouTube (YouTube) and Google (Google) take the other top spots.
The data was compiled from 14.6 million searches made using Symantec’s OnlineFamily.Norton, which lets parents track their kids’ online activity. And while Symantec is almost certainly hoping to sell more software as a result, it’s also a timely reminder that kids are growing up fast these days.
Well they might be searching for specific google products, like google wave, google chrome etc. I know i search for google wave whenever I need to get there because I haven't bothered to remember the url or bookmark it.
I search for google like 20 times a day, by writing google in the URL bar and hitting enter, firefox automatically opens the top search on google I think, which just so happens to be google.

This probably has a lot to do with. That along with parents who need to buy this to monitor their kids online usage tend to have little knowledge about computers make it likely the results are skewed from the parents searching as well. I'm assuming the software needs to be activated and deactivated in order to record what the child is searching, so if the parent forgets to deactivate the software or simply doesn't realize it needs to be done, the results will be contaminated. Considering how huge this sample size is and how likely it is that the parents are retarded, I'm pretty sure this tells us basically nothing about what children are searching for on the internet. Also, considering how small the average child's vocabulary is I doubt they know the word porn.

The worst part was waiting like five minutes on 56k for the pictures to finish loading up. Now there's a plethora of videos for every kind of taste (no matter how strange or outlandish) that can be streamed or downloaded to be watched at your pleasure. Kids really are spoiled now.
Kids don't care about porn. It's their parents searching for it. For kids all this stuff isn't 'special' like for adults.
And searching for stuff like 'google'. 'youtube', 'facebook', apparently these are normal top keywords in searchengines. But how can they search for that? Just type the same thing in the url bar.
It's probably the parent's using the kid's computer or kid's user name to search for porn. Nobody will think to look in little Johnny's browser history.
im really glad my parents didnt have censorship software on the comp when i was a kid, not that i looked at porn or anything, just the principle of the matter.

just some days ago my sister wanted to show me some video on youtube. but before typing the "you" in the url field I remembered that youporn will show up so I just went on google and googled youtube lol :D
Anyways, why would you search any of those? All of them are among the easiest things to find or are terrible key words. Why would you google "porn" or "sex" if that's what you're looking for? Second, everything else can be found by adding a .com after it...
What kind of retarded kids are around these days? "DERRR HOW I FIND GOOGLE/YAHOO/FACEBOOK?"
I mean really who actually searches for those terms, rather than just type in the single word into your address bar. And who actually looks just just straight up "porn". I'm pretty sure if I'm going to be looking up porn I'm going to have a little more discretion than that.
in firefox it makes a search out of everything you writes in the addressbar no? So if you simply writes "google" it will process it through google and search for the highest match and then beam you up(scotty)... right?
My mom has been using a computer at her job(s) for the past 5-10 years and this past year I saw her type a url into google several times. She would navigate to google and then type the url including the 'www' directly into the search bar. Since it worked I guess she didn't see anything wrong with it?
Woah "tracking device" software...way to trust your kids guys.
Maybe they should just parent them instead. Also it's well known that kids search for that stuff..I did. Actually I probably learned most of my adult content from movies, tv , and comedy.

Normal.
I started watching porn when i was around nine and saw it when i was around 7...thx to my older brother at the time watching it with me at night since we shared the same room. But i was never caught till i was 18 so just 4 months ago lol
When I was a little kid (like 3-4) we had a video store near us that had an adult section with a door and a sign that said adults only or something like that. While my mom was looking at movies I walked in there.
What do they expect? They parents don't buy playboys or Video tapes and hide them in the closet anymore, They use the computer. Kids gotta snoop around somewhere.
PS- I think I was like 7 or 8 when my friend and I found some old playboys in some bushes.
I can't believe some people in this thread think 7 year olds dont know what porn and sex are. Of course they do. I knew those words at a younger age than that. I doubt they are searching for those words in a high volume though.

If you look at the breakdown in the actual article, only boys are into porn and sex. Girls are into Taylor Swift and sex....along with youtube, google and facebook of course.
The first time I watched porn I was 6. I found a VHS tape under my uncle's bed. It was some kind of eastern european gang bang. I thought the girl sucking 2 cocks at the same time was crazy, because no woman would do such nonsense. I mean, I pee from there and she is doing that? Ahah good times
I found out everything about sex when my mom explained me everything needed to know at the age of 8. Watched my first porn on the internet at 10. To be honest I envy these kids, discovering porn over the internet while trying to hide it from their parents, then going to class the day after and telling other little kids what they found out must be completely awesome at a little age.
Clearly alarmist and misleading statistics put out by the very company that serves to profit from the appearance of preschool debauchery. I'm sure it isn't difficult to make the mistake of browsing on the kids' account, and I'm sure most parents will want to test the software. Maybe a couple kids know of the general concept of porn and are drawn to it simply because it's disallowed, but given that 7 is too young to even have a sex drive, I would never take these stats at face value.

Yeah, I remember looking up "vagina" in the dictionary with my friend.. neither of us could spell it so it took a while, lol. now kids can google it and find out more than they ever wanted to know.

LOL, back in my day you found porn in the woods. Seriously.
When I was a kid you would find porn in the woods here to (Sweden). Most guys my generation know about this phenomena. I always wondered who it was and why they would read and dump their porn in the woods.
I feel todays kids get it served to much. When I was a kid, finding pornography was a archeological endevour, and the parents could rejoice over their active kids who loved staying outdoors and not infront of some machine. Today any 5 year old moron can go to tube8.com and watch some plastic bitch take five cocks up her asshole.

anyways, little kids shouldnt be on the internet. computer is ok, internet, no
That's like saying "Can I have some food please" when going to a restaurant.
But seriously, kids know much more than we give them credit for, especially when it comes to computers. Handling them comes as natural as breathing to kindergarten kids these days. If we thought we were a computer damaged generation, I don't want to know where today's kids will end up.

Nice, what are the goals of the life then? Other than money and escapist entertainments.
Maybe it's better to raise them in dignity and respect and make them not want to take decadent tv and internet content seriously.
Right yes. Clearly the only worthwhile goal in life is to procreate. Protecting human rights, protecting the environment for future generations (even if they aren't mine), striving to be happy, pushing forth the frontiers of human knowledge, spending time with the people I love, just to name a few. These are the goals of a worthless deadbeat.

During a family reunion this summer we got a chance to explore the old family farmhouse which had been abandoned for decades. In addition to old schoolbooks, clothes, and piles of debris, we found a 1970's porn magazine in near perfect condition. I've been trying not to speculate about which of my relatives it may have belonged to.

WASN'T ME. I didn't say a thing about porn AND I said I'd rather watch Boxer vs Yellow or Flash vs Jaedong.
and how do you know what lesbian porn is like? How are you so familiar with its audience?
Like all good English boys, my first experience of porn was through Page 3 in the Sun, which you weren't allowed to buy yourself, you had to scour trains and bus for copies that people had left behind, just to get a shot of some bimbos tits.
As for googling google, my browser has the google bar right next to the url. If you want to go to google, I see no reason why people won't google that into the google bar (I just have google under favorites).
As for the searches, I agree that it'd be the parents testing out the filter. Who would actually search for "porn" or for "sex"?
Also, how does this Symantec measure the age of the person? It won't measure the age of the user on a shared computer.....a 7 year old probably could have a 13 year old brother.....
I don't believe the statistics- particularly the girl category.
Ok, first of all; when would you ever actually search on the term google, not on google? And why the **** would kids 7 and under search on porn, do they even know what it is?

Well in firefox when you type something into the address bar without www or .com etc. it does a Google I'm Feeling Luck search on that word, that's what I use most of the time, open a new tab enter 'teamliquid' or 'google' or whatever and it will take you there and register as search item.
