My friend and I have asked two wonderful ladies for a dinner double-date. we're all in our early 20's and quite frankly pretty green to this sort of thing as we all come from rural Alaska (we all live in Anchorage now, though). We don't have very many fine dining establishments in Anchorage, but the Crows Nest up top a 30-something story hotel is the nicest place downtown Anchorage has to offer.
here is the website: http://www.captaincook.com/crowsnest.php
I was just wondering what kind of attire one might wear to a 4 diamond establishment? I was thinking of doing some dark wash jeans with a blazer and pocket square with no tie... Would that be good?
One of the girls was also wondering what she should wear, as our closets are usually occupied by carhartts and XTRATUFF boots. I suggested a "little black dress." But I digress....
Any helpful tips or comments appreciated!

at minimum pants and a shirt
look at the picture on this page: http://www.captaincook.com/restaurants.php
thats what you should be wearing, probably not required (though it wouldn't hurt) to wear a tie + jacket, but shirt and pants, definitely
seems like a nice place, have fun!

I'm going to a nice place tomorrow night myself, and unfortunately don't have any decent slacks. Do you think a nice pair of jeans with a tucked shirt (and maybe tie) would be acceptable?
|
how bout a wifebeater and some short shorts? reaally though you should wear a nice suit.

Just call them and find out if there is a dress code. From the images on the site it looks like a jacket and tie place, but it is also Alaska. If Sarah Palin taught me anything it is that while snowmobiles are certainly not, ties may be optional.
After you call the restaurant to make sure you don't need a jacket and tie you want to look good. Stay away from jeans for formal dining. Even if you can get away with it at the restaurant it just looks bad. You cant go wrong with dress pants, a shirt, and a tie. Shoes are as important though.
Women have much more freedom when it comes to formal dining. As long as they aren't wearing pants and tshirt they can do dress, skirt/blouse, pantsuit, etc.

I don't think a suit is necessary. A suit is not normally formal dining wear unless there is an event attached. Do you wear a suit to a nice dinner after a concert? Sure. After a job interview? Sure. After a wedding? Sure. But on a date? Not so much imo.

Jeans send a certain message. Sometimes that message is "I don't own real pants". I am sure you will look fine, but investing in a pair of "go to" pants is never a bad idea.

Going out to dinner tomorrow night was a bit of a spur of the moment thing, but I'll definitely look into getting a good pair of pants in the future. I checked my closet and I do have a pair of dress pants, but they don't fit as well as a good pair of jeans, and also have one of those stretchable waist bands, so I'm not sure if I should go with those, or with the jeans.
As far as the restaurant goes, I've been doing whatever research I can. The attire is listed as business casual, so I should be fine without a tie. On review sites, they say there isn't a very strict dress code, but most of the comments were from 2006/7, so they might have gotten a bit stricter since then. I'll just see how the slacks look on me, and only go to the jeans if absolutely necessary.
As a side note, I'm a bit excited, the restaurant is a steakhouse called N9NE, and it's apparently a bit of a celebrity hangout (not that I care much).

That place looks good ^^ Yeah I mean it isn't the end of the world to wear jeans, and some people have no problem with it. It also depends on the reason. But for example, if you were taking out a woman and she did indeed put on her little black number, you wouldn't want to be under dressed beside her.

Tell the ladies to ditch the other guy and you'll wear them both at the same time. It will go over well, I promise. Good luck!

This is funny because it was the girl hes going with asking me questions such as "do you have a girlfriend?" and laying on my bed with her shirt off.

NICE jeans with a good shirt and NICE SHOES (!) are perfectly fine. I don't even own a suit or a tie and I'm 26... My friends also at max own 1 for funerals and stuff like this.
But I don't know, this stuff can varies pretty hard from country to country. I was in Ireland and i was pretty shocked... During the day girls look or actually are still unwashed wearing their sleeping or sport clothes and in the evening they dress up like sluts. Horrible, it's kinda similar for guys (but it does not jump you into the eye like it does for girls)...
Oh, NEVER wear a wifebeater... That’s like Instantfail.
I would go for something a bit like this (if jeans or cloth pants really doesn't matter as long as it fits): http://www.fm-siebdruck.de/catalog/images/787_00.jpg
|
I'm not worried about shoes, I have a pair of RM Williams Chelsea boots.
|
good luck mate!
have fun
|
Decent pants, dress shirt, blazer, nice shoes.
You potentially could get away with a really really good pair of jeans, but you will need a dress shirt, and a nice jacket. Or a tie.
Whenever I take a girl out to a fine dining restaurant though, its normally some of the best clothes i can find that I wear, and the girl is normally in a really nice dress.
Fine dining is upscale food, and so you should be at least appearing to be part of the regular client base.
|
just wear smart casual with a good shoe.
for god sake don't wear a tie to a date.
|
what..
i thought i was like the only TL'er from anchorage.
umm i personally haven't been there but i've heard it is amazing. as far as the clothing suggestions the advice given here seems about right.

i love fancy eating places. too bad i'm poor as fuck! come to think of it i own exactly 1 collared shirt and no formal pants or shoes, so i guess i wouldn't be able to go anyway. have fun! the % chance of getting laid is directly proportional to how much money you spend on a girl (source: SCIENCE). you're gonna be great!
|
I just want to add my support to the dress pants - its worth making the extra effort and they are comfortable anyway!

How can you not know what to wear to nice places if you made it into your 20s? Guess I was raised differently.

Because there aren't really any other restaurants as nice as this one in the whole city/area. Maybe 1-2 max that I can think of. o.o

Yeah I've never really been to a *nice* restaurant in my life. A lot of TL'ers live in bigger metropolitan areas in the united states / europe / asia where there are plenty of fine dining places. Thats why I was seeing if people with experience with this knew weather a suit might be over the top, etc.
I think I should just call them as meph said earlier.
|
|
|
A suit with no tie, and no jeans. Although it sounds like she wouldnt give a damn.
|
A suit ,if you have one, is preferable. If not, wear a sports jacket with a nice shirt. Wearing a pair of jeans or a pair of chinos/khakis doesn't really make a difference, since they are both considered a casual pant. If you opt for jeans, go for a pair with a dark wash. Hope this helps.
|
You can pull off jeans if they are a semi-decent pair, and as long as you include the most important thing: shoes. Guys don't think about shoes that much, but they are hands down the absolute most important part of your attire. Spend the most you can afford on a pair of black leather shoes, and you can get in just about anywhere with a nice pair of jeans, a shirt and a jacket.
|
|
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO JEANS. yooh kno, for most of the time, they dont even let guys wear jeans at clubs... don't wear jeans!!! and wear a dress shirt with no tie if you're really not into the formal look.
chuck bass from gossip girls should be your inspiration

Shoes are very important, as stated earlier. I'm not sure if you guys have them in Alaska but Discount Shoe Warehouse (DSW) is awesome for shoes. They have tons of really fashionable shoes (from actual brands like Steve Madden, Clarks, etc.) for good prices. I recently got two pairs of dress loafers--one black, one brown--, a really nice pair of suede hush puppies and a pair of Puma sneakers for like $350 total.
|
overdressing is never a problem cos u can always come up with a ballin' story to explain it if you underdress though, you just look like an idiot
|
nice shoes, buttondown shirt, and pants which aren't jeans. i'm not a huge fan of khakis but you can wear those if you play it safe.
if you want to go dressy-casual you can always go for a sportscoat over a polo/button down and nice jeans.

If you MUST wear jeans, for heaven's sake let them at least be VERY dark. Nothing says "I don't belong in a fancy restaurant" more than jeans and tennis shoes. (well, aside from things like wifebeaters where you probably won't even get in the door.)
I also don't think you'd be wrong to wear a tie to a nice place like this, and chicks dig a man who can dress up. But if you can't bring yourself to wear one, going without is fine.
FWIW, I wore a suit and tie to a first date at a fancy restaurant and now we're engaged and getting married next June. :D

Well, I live in LA now (I'm from Manila) and have been to a few fancy restaurants. I guess people here are more casual since normal pants, polo shirt are fine for almost all of them. Even the fancy steakhouses doesn't need business casual. The only one I remember that requires more is the Crustacean. It's business casual but khaki, dress shoes and dress shirt is fine. I think I've even used polo shirt to go there.
|
Nice(!) jeans, any shirt (maybe a tie) and a jacket is what I would go for : ) A nice pair of jeans is better than an ugly pair of dress pants. I don't think shoes matter that much as long as they're fresh.
EDIT: Dress in your own style. Originality is stylish.

it really depends on the jeans though. A pair of goodlooking jeans will take you far, as long as they are of good quality and fits you well. As for dress pants and shirt, sure, but dont wear a tie unless you wear a jacket too. If you go with that setup without a jacket the outfit looks just halfway, but that is my own opinion.
Tbh, at a date like this i would go in my dark pair of tiger jeans with a nice looking belt, my tiger shoes, a white shirt (outside) the pants - just make sure it is cut as a "wear-outside-the-pants"-shirt. its usually defined wether the bottom of the shirt is cut straight or not. Straight = inside the pants. If its cold (alaska) it wear my coat to that.
Also that - dont forget about the shoes. Wearing a nice suit will do absolutelly nothing if you cant back it up with a good looking pair of shoes...
+ Show Spoiler + The shoes The jeans The belt The shirt (color doesnt matter, just make sure u like it) The coat
But as Mani said. CHECK THE DRESSCODE AT THE RESTAURANT FIRST! No matter how good your jeans look, they wont let you in if the have a dresscode that says otherwise.
Edit: Final note - regardless of what people have written here, make sure you are comfortable in what youre wearing and that you too think it looks good. Otherwise it will shine through and it will make you less appealing

I love fancy places. We had a 4 diamond resturant here not sure if it has retained its status but amazing kitchen. got to tour it with the Chef, almost started there but they lost my resume and couldn't call me back. By the time they found it I had a job.Now I make them ice sometimes ^_^.
Ok just checked we have a few other than the above mentioned place Acacia (2)
there are also
Janos (6) Anthony in the Catalinas (3) Arizona Inn's main dining room (1) Primo (2) and The Gold Room (13)
The number after the restaurants are how many years in a row they have had the 4 diamond rating.

b-cas is usual for these places.
i remember i went to one in shorts and a black t-shirt. everyone looked at me weird.

Why don't you just call them? I mean, some 3-star (Michelin) restaurants even allow casual attire as they have separate sections for them (e.g. John Georges); but at the same time, some restaurants make it very clear that jackets are required. It's fairly arbitrary, so the best bet would be calling and and asking.
Typically, business casual should be sufficient for most restaurants -- collared button-down shirt with pants (no jeans) and shoes (no sneakers), bring a jacket just in case.
Hope you have a good time
|
|
Here is advice: Jacket: Top Button only. Undo when you sit down Tie: Optional, if you think you will look/feel awkward in a tie then don't go for it Shirt: With a Collar and tucked into ... Pants: Matching the jacket. Iron/Press them beforehand Belt: Yes. Nothing stupid with big and shiny belt buckle. It should not draw attention Shoes: Loafers will not do for dinner. Find some nice Black dress shoes with laces. Socks: do not wear white atheletic socks. black or dark navy is proper. Remove all wrist jewelry, hemp necklaces, timex watches etc.
I suggest a black jacket with matching pants. Single breasted black dinner coat. White collared shirt sans undershirt (perhaps wife-beater if u sweat) top button undone. If you unbutton the top 2 you will appear a tad too cheesy. black shoes black socks

I think a good rule in general is never show up under-dressed to a funeral. This goes for everything, not just funerals. If you are under dressed, you look dumb. If you are overdressed, you look like you work for govornment/law firm/important poeple and just got off work. This is much better than dumb.
On the other hand, if you dress up too much on a date, you risk looking uptight and making your date feel inadequately dressed.
Good luck.

I think a lot of people are not realizing just how nice a 4 diamond restaurant is. I would say slacks are definately a must and a nice dress shirt or something would be the right thing to wear. Although their dress code may say otherwise you might look weird walking into a restaurant like that wearing jeans.

I don't think its retarded. The fit of the clothes is spot on and looks elegant though a bit stuffy. By suit, do you mean blazer or jacket? As a 20 year old, dont wear a full suit if it is a casual date. Also, do not wear slacks with mismatched blazer, only older gentlemen can pull off that look. A slim dark pair of jeans (just realized you have to wear slacks) with a darker dress shirt (not black). You can wear a tie only if it is relatively slim and not a business tie thats like 4" wide.
|
As long as you do not have clothes with akward features, such as intentional rips in your jeans, and the restaurant does not have a dress code, you should be fine. First impressions are important, but I think people wrongly assume that expensive(-looking) clothes always automatically give a good impression. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with the clothes you wear. If you feel comfortable, you feel good and if you feel good, that will positively influence how people around you feel about you.
Besides, the girls you two are going out with do not seem to know what to wear either. As such, even if you end up making what would normally be an akward choice, they will probably be a little more forgiving about it.
|

Four diamond as rated by what organization? No one here, except those really into restaurants/critics/etc is fit to judge how "nice" it is. There's a difference between Michelin stars and diamonds.
|
First decide what more important impressing the ladies or wearing restaurant appropriate wear. (hint pick them)
Second think about what they would like to see you wear. What type of women are they? Would they prefer that washed pair of jeans or maybe a suit? I generally go with high end dark jeans, dress shirt and blazer, its casual but still dressed up and stylish. But like I said find out what they want.
Third think about your shoes. If you don't own a decent pair of dress shoes buy them. If you decide on a relaxed look, get a really nice pair of leather sneakers to go with it, and for God's sake don't use them for everyday wear, they will only look decent like 5-10 times. Make them count.
Best of luck!
|
I vote no jeans! Even if they are nice, the fact that you are wearing them takes your dress code down a level, whereas if you stick to something just as casual that is not jeans, like khakis and a blazer etc, you could reasonably fit in a more casual OR more formal code, and thus will be more likely to be comfortable with your level of dress no matter what everyone else is wearing when you get there. Trust me, the girl will be less impressed if you underdress than if you overdress. And for her, a little black dress is appropriate for almost any code, so good advice!
|
dress to impress (the girls not the restaurant)
|
for the love of god no jeans
|
In Canada you can just go to Moore's (fancier/formal clothing store), describe what you are going to be doing, and the clerk will go through and pick stuff out with you/do your measurements/ get everything right. There are probably stores like this wherever you are now: I'd go to one of them and get advice from people who did it everyday and do your shopping at the same time.
|
And for godsakes no jeans. I'd wear something nice with a dinner jacket or something on top and take it off if I'm overdressed.
|
Oh and shoes are really important too. Make sure they are compatible with what you are wearing. Don't get nice pants, shirt, belt and dinner jacket or w/e and wear your usual shoes.

As a side note, I'm a bit excited, the restaurant is a steakhouse called N9NE, and it's apparently a bit of a celebrity hangout (not that I care much).
N9NE is great, you have good taste--but it's best with a large group. In that case, you have more wiggle room, as the general rule is that while two sloppy people will stand out in a restaurant, ten casual (but not too casual) people will fit right by virtue of numbers.
As for the reason that N9NE is great with a large group, it's because the menu has a lot of expensive items that lend themselves to sharing. Try the caviar or the filet--you can't go wrong and the N9NE guys in Chicago were absolutely fantastic. Me and this other analyst on my floor used to go there all the time when we were working in Chicago (but back then we could expense the dinners lol.)

be real. wear your genetically endowed coat and don't sully it with commercial fabrics. at the very most kill some wild thing of appropriate size. take measures to ensure the wild thing is neither too large nor too small. wear the wild thing's pelt to your dinner. should you choose to wear a polar bear, know that it is a rite of passage to kill the beast with a swiss army pocket knife and no other assistance. to do otherwise is extremely disrespectful.

It largely depends on the restaurant. I went to Jean Georges in jeans (nice jeans, but still jeans); and Jean Georges is a 5-diamond restaurant.

No one here, except those really into restaurants/critics/etc is fit to judge how "nice" it is. There's a difference between Michelin stars and diamonds.
rated by AAA, not that prestigious. Zagat and Michelin are arguably the authorities of restaurant reviews/ratings.
A Michelin 3 star is probably more prestigious than a 5-diamond.

Where a CJ entus shirt, and a MBC Heros sweater. But seriously Manifestos advice is the best so far. Stay away from jeans. And wear a nice shirt and a some slacks, and nice shoes. No tie required no jacket required. (unless restaurant says otherwise)

Wow, what an attention whore.

Hmm. At formal events I usually wear a V neck sweater along with dress shirt + tie or bowtie. For pants I just wear some nice jeans, and for my shoes I just wear my Chuck Taylors (black) .

I lol'd at the facial expression of the guy in the grey shirt in back of the picture.
