Good points, Falcynn. I'd say as far as ground rules, just don't do anything that prevents the fortress from being taken over by your successor, and since we have a fairly good number of newbies, that probably includes adamantium. Large, grandiose projects are encouraged, but if you can't finish what you started, be sure to explain to your successor what your plans are and what is needed to complete things.

Screen shots and creative storytelling are encouraged, since they always make succession games more interesting, but feel free to write as little or as much as you like. I'd recommend against having any set time limits at least for now, provided that whoever is playing keeps people posted on their progress and attempts to get things done in a timely manner.

I'll go ahead and start up a fortress in the next 24 hours or so, so any feedback on what kind of location we want is encouraged. I don't think we should start in any haunted areas or under a goblin fortress or anything like that, but I'm open to pretty much any other suggestions.

Magma pipe.

Yeah! Magma!

Just hope the magma pipe doesn't reach to the surface like all of my other games One rogue fire imp and the whole forest goes up in flames causing one of my woodcutters/fisherdwarves to inevitably catch on fire and die, leading to everyone running outside to loot their bodies, which leads to those dwarves catching on fire, causing them to run inside to grab a drink and blow up my booze stash, setting fire to the rest of the fortress...not fun times.

Although the benefits of magma forges/smelters more than outweigh that risk

I hope it does spawn on the top.. so you can train all of your dwarves in the art of wrestling and send them against the dreaded fire demons with shields of wood and their bare hands with their spider silk cloth socks as tools of suffocation so the death of those demons shall be swift!

Screw that, first thing I'm gonna do when my reign starts is build a damn moat, with the only entrance being through a 3-tile wide corridor full of dwarven atom-smashers and spike traps set on repeat (the spike traps will be connected to a pressure plate located in a channel cut into a river, which when opened up by the flood gates will bring a continuous stream of water which will set the spikes to activate and deactivate continuously). The only thing I'll have to worry about except an army of building destroyers will be the stupidity of my own dwarves...

Unless you guys think that's being a little too cheap =/

It is in regular dorf fortress, but for my plan... i would make all the dorfs into farmers, and maybe the highest skilled into stone crafters. With this done for the first half of my year, i will trade off all of the crafts for food and seeds and with enough food and a fully functional well i will turn all dorfs into single handly godlike warriors, demanding them to train days on end without rest, and i can only hope, HOPE that something somewhere has the balls to attack me ^.^

A cool idea while they're farmers and/or crafters is to build a "gym" full of screw pumps that aren't attached to anything and set them all to manual pump. Or you can do this as a completely separate phase for a few months in between the phases you already have planned out. With enough pumps you can get a pretty decent number of dwarves to be "superdwarvenly tough" in a matter of months.

Update:
After about 2 hours of world-generation, I found a site that meets all requirements. Lots of trees, a magma pipe (at the surface), flux, fairly calm, not very evil, all the ingredients of a great fortress. The temperature is 'Hot,' which I'd rather have avoided, but I was getting sick of making maps. Plus this way I don't think it'll freeze in the winter, making a well/cistern unnecessary.

I'll dedicate my turn to getting a workable fortress up and running, with a steady food supply, decent workers' quarters, large workshop area, and so forth. More updates to come as the year progresses and significant things happen.

EDIT: Also, to avoid the fiery scenario that Falcynn mentioned, I'll be building a wall around the lava pipe, which can be deconstructed if/when a future player decides to build lava forges or whatever on the surface, or can be left in place and the tube tapped into underground.

You can just build a door into the wall and lock it (forbid it, and close it tightly) and that should keep fire imps out.

Anyways, glad to see this finally getting rolling. Excited to read all future updates

Update number 2:
We've had our first casualty already, but fortunately it was only a war dog. For the sake of argument, I'll call him Bruno, for the poor thing was a stray, with nobody to look after him. Bruno, being the ferocious beast he was, simply could not restrain his wrath upon spotting a couple of fire imps. Unfortunately for him, the imps were floating benignly on the surface of the lava tube when his fury descended upon them. In spite of being rapidly incinerated by the fiery lava, the heroic Bruno viciously tore two fire imps limb from limb before succumbing to the sweet embrace of death. Even though your body will never be recovered, you will live on in our hearts forever, Bruno.

In other news, as of early Summer, all the lakes/ponds on the map evaporated due to the extreme heat. This revealed a need to produce a more reliable source of fresh drinking water, so the construction of a canal from the river, which is some distance away from the fortress, to a nearby (now empty) pond has commenced.

A single exploratory mining shaft has been dug to the lowest level possible, and more will be constructed to aid future commanders in the locating of valuable ores, gems, and stones.

All the dwarves are now living in their own separate sleeping quarters, with plenty of room for future expansion. The bedrooms are laid out in a tesselated design, one which can be repeated easily in either a vertical or horizontal direction.

That's all for now, stay tuned for more exciting adventures from outpost Zuglarabod, or "Shipstricken" for those non-dwarves among us.

EDIT: Oh, and there's elephants too. They seem not to be incredibly hostile so far, but who knows what moods might take them in the future? Also, there were unicorns here when I first arrived. They seem to be gone now, no idea where to. Maybe the elephants ate them.

Hunt them, Then encrust them onto wooden crafts, then trade them to the elves, when the elves get angry kill them until they decide to trade with you, then trade them elf bone crafts.

Hmm. Put me down as interested/maybe, if there is an eventual group going.

I might need a week or two before I can check it out though (lol midsemester rush).

Back in my days we conquered MUDs. This 'graphics' nonsense is child's play.
