After hearing a rumor that WCG only planned to announce 2 more Xbox titles and 1 more PC title, I followed up to figure out the source of the information. Turns out the source is fairly credible as it has been listed on the US WCG site. Specifically, the amount being 8 games is mentioned in the FAQ here and the game breakdown is pictured here.
Of course, this is still not 100% official, but would appear to be the final game count and system breakdown for this years WCG. The development should not be unexpected due to the whole global economic downturn, and I am happy to see that any games are being added myself.
As part of another rumor (coming also from the same location as the first one, located at the comments at: http://www.wcg.com/6th/fun/news/news_view.asp?keyno=C09020610002&page=1 ), no EA game will be used in this years WCG. The only source for this is just the NFS community learning their game will not be used, and I've seen threads were RA3 was having difficulty getting into this years WCG. I'd theorize such a thing would likely be due to problems getting EA to pay for last years sponsorship (this last part is completely and utterly baseless in terms of facts, but just a logical theory considering the amount of time it took to pay finalists).
Sad to see how much gaming continues to hurt - but hope WCG comes out of this recession strong and that WCG Ultimate Gamer continues to do well. After all, they are one of the last major tournaments still standing, and most importantly, they have consistently delivered on their promises to be a first rate event.

is WCG ultimate gamer doing well?
|
Having less games at a huge tournament like WCG is a good thing, at least in my eyes. WCG TV will show more bw and you don't have to follow 32423 tournaments simultanously if you're interested in the overall event. I doubt EA had payment issues, they probably decided to no sponsor future events and the WCG organisation will only pick games that are supported by either a huge fanbase (like bw) or sponsors.

Inc isnt signed up for either qualifier...hmm

I'm disappointed it's still Guitar Hero over Rock Band, but what are you gonna do?

To echo what most people have said here, less official games is definitely for the better. Evolution, the major fighting game tourney, only officially has 6-8 games each year.
The community generally supports side tournaments for a ton more games (just like I'm sure people will be playing rock band at WCG), but keeping the official competition to a few games makes for a much better tournament.

I thought Tougeki was the major fighting tournament?

Yes, Tougeki's the one in Japan and thus more prestigious (better competition overall) and has a little more international representation than Evolution, the US-hosted one. Both would be considered really big and major though. On a side note, Tougeki runs 8 games, so it's in the same range.

No more boring racing or sports games?
Sounds good to me.
Now if they just get Street Fighter 4 into the line-up and two more good, entertaining games, and they'll be on the right path imo.
Street Fighter 4 is FAR FAR bigger than Virtua Fighter 5 right now. Case in point: in March, there was a 243-man SF4 tournament in Atlanta, Georgia. The brackets alone were more than 6 feet high:

Wow thanks for posting this. I didn't realize WCG USA qualifiers were coming up so soon. For all the info they have it's pretty hard to navigate to where to actually register. And I wish I could find out what maps are going to be used...

hmm doesnt look like the fighting game thing may extend to WCG Worlds oh well http://qualify.us.wcg.com/fighterclub btw theres a site and its for 4 different fighting games
sf4 sc4 doa4 vf5
|
why not put dota
and put SF4 while its super popular
|
SF4 does seem like a likely candidate for WCG since it is so popular, but is Capcom willing to pay to sponsor? I always felt that Capcom's effort in USA has always been halfass. It is usually the SF community that kept the game alive.

The list looks better than ever. Fuck, SFIV would be awesome indeed, but isn't it a bit too early to include it? Even though the it seems really well balanced.

It's been out since at least August in the arcades. In Japan's national tournament a few months ago, the top 8 players used 7 different characters (only character repeat was Sagat). For that matter, the Korean national tourney champ won with a different character than those 7. Almost all of the new console characters are among the weaker characters in the cast, so they're not an issue.
As a testament to the game's competitive popularity, a lot of previously retired or inactive players are playing SF4, as well as top guys from even 3D fighters and the King of Fighters (not to mention previous Capcom games). Some players who generally play the more modern 2D fighters are also spending a significant amount of time on SF4, and it's not like they still can't find nonstop competition on GG/BB/whatever. Tournament entries are huge all over.

Maybe they'll use PES instead of FIFA this year then! One can only hope considering how much luck/randomness plays in FIFA.

well, if some people don't know, the WCG Europe site reported that Carom3D and Red Stone would be back this year.
I did hear early this year that there wouldn't be any EA games this year, I guess that must be true
here is the article (In German): http://www.wcg-europe.com/de/news/25950.htm

I wonder the other PC game will be. TF2, Company of Heroes, World in Conflict, CoD4? Do those games even have a real competitive scene any more?
Yeah hopefully SF4 will get on it, I really want to see that game become more popular.

CoD4's competitive scene is still around, but I think it's dying because lack of leagues and tournaments. This is common considering how there's a new CoD game every 1 - 1 1/2 years.. heck, they even announced a Modern Warfare 2 recently. TF2 is also in the same boat as CoD4.
|
Counter-Strike is generally more played and having more than one team game is very expensive, not many countries would send, especially for a game like TF2 that requires a large team
|
Despite EA being horrible in general, RA3 is better than a lot of other trash games out right now :l and it's becoming relatively balanced with the last patch 1.09.

CEVO Season 3's finals were this past weekend for CoD4. TF2 also has a fairly competitive scene as well.

The WCG USA site is more recent than that post however - so as their is only 1 more PC game to be added, perhaps only one of those two actually made it in as the last slot? Or I suppose WCG USA could have decided to skip doing one / both due to low attendance for them last year.

I hope WCG will be worth watching again. Last year I didn't watch a single broadcast.

looks like my sources are all a bunch of idiots
Final Games List Counter-Strike 1.6 (PC) Starcraft: Broodwar (PC) Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne (PC) FIFA 2009 (PC) Trackmania Nations (PC) Red Stone (PC) Carom3D (PC)
Virtua Fighter 5 (Xbox 360) Guitar Hero: World Tour (1v1) (Xbox 360)
Asphalt 4 (Mobile Phone) Wise Star 2 (Mobile Phone)
As well as another MMORPG named Dungeon and Fighter (I'm not familiar) as a promotional game tournament
good call on trading NFS for TMN. And that's coming from someone who played NFS at the Grand finals before. Other than that, nothing too big. Interesting that Halo 3 or GoW 2 didn't make it in this year...

As the WCG 2008 Silver Medalist in Asphalt 4: Elite Racing, I must say, this list is a big relief to myself.

Disregard this post

WTF is Redstone
and Camrom3D... is a pool game?
Wat in the world is going on..someone reassure me D;
|
zizou21 - Red Stone and Carom3D were both used last year.
Red Stone had a whopping 4 teams at the World Finals (the US finals had 3 teams, only one of which had ever played the game before).
So those titles are no worse than last year, albeit not games picked for their competitive scenes. :p
|
Oh, Trackmania. Interesting.
|
FIFA 2009 (PC) Trackmania Nations (PC) Red Stone (PC) Carom3D (PC) Asphalt 4 (Mobile Phone) Wise Star 2 (Mobile Phone)
Do these games have large competative scenes that Im not aware of? Or is there some big sponsership deal bringing these games in?

FIFA has big followings in certain countries, they take it very seriously. Especially in South America and Iran/India. Also, Europe has some leagues for the game as well.
Trackmania has (arguably) the largest competitive following for racing games. It was made for the ESWC competition.
Carom3D is Samsung owned or something. It has an underground following, especially in Eastern Europe and Brazil.
Red Stone is a Korean MMO and does not have much of a following outside of Korea (I believe there are deals in place to get this to the WCG grand finals)
The other two are there because Samsung Mobile sponsors WCG.
All except Wise Star 2 and Trackmania were at WCG last year.
|
Trackmania has an absolutely massive competitive scene. Before ESWC went under, the prizes they gave out for TM were staggering.
