Eve is like neither of those.
Eve is very unique in the MMO world in that you gain skill points by time and that is IT. No amount of playing will help you advance your character further just by going with skill points.
Losing ships actually hurts in Eve too. People who knew my CNR got toasted due to bullshit will attest to this :p 2 bil isk vanishing in 3 minutes is not so cool. Shit happens but it's a really fun game with that taken into account.
Beware the learning curve. Eve is a game that takes awhile for you to learn and the amount you have to deal with will seem nearly insurmountable. At least nowadays they have tutorial missions so that you can learn how to play...when I started they just threw you into the game and you figured it out on your own.
I miss the old red circle damage indicators that didn't even bother to show structure...or CRUISE CROWS!

Yeah..... Except for that JF.
By the way, seem like you should come back to eve.

Wow, an EVE community here and I was completely unaware until i happened to start browsing the sports forum =p.
I've always been interested in playing EVE. If there's still an active community here I might check into getting started myself.

Most people are still that way.
I just happen to have a lot of money to throw around

This tutorial looks like it's going to take a while.. lots of stuff going on in the UI too!
Wish me luck climbing this learning curve =p.

Wowee, this condor feels soo awsome coming off the newb ship. Can't believe how much faster the missions go now, lol.
Really enjoying the relatively automated skill training. Got my learning skills up a bit while off at work, now i'm back-filling with the various necessities (missiles, and a couple other reccomended skills i dug out of a newb guide for caladari).
Still very lost in such a big world though. Hopefully finishing this little soldier ship story-line will give me some more pointers.

Do you have a 14 day trial or a 21 day trial? Also join the SCBW channel ingame for tips. And make sure you get your learnings up!
|
If you guys need a couple of million to start off the game with (to get a few more skillbooks and a few better frigates just so it goes a bit more easy), pm me on this forum. I can send you some money
|
14 day trial unfortunately, but it's quite fun thus far and I see no reason not to subscribe at the end of the trial. I've been hanging around in the scbw channel, not much chatter going on ^_^, but i'm around (or tabbed out skilling and playing sc2 beta =x).
I've read a few skill guides and what not, have the base learning skill up to 3 (i think), and i'm working on the next level in-between the mandatory skills for the various career missions i'm doing (basic combat, mining, science, etc. as I wanted to get a little taste of everything). Hope to see some of you in scbw channel tonight.

Ahhh, you're Caldari. That means you're half way to becoming a real Liquid Inc. member. Now all you need to do is crosstrain to Minny, refuse to fly anything bigger than a BC hull (unless you're going to faction fit it and lose it ratting) and send 200m ISK to Gordon Alexander in game.
EDIT: Oh, and the "little bit of everything" approach is basically impossible in EVE. Getting a decently skilled PvP sub-cap pilot will take you a year at the very least. That's not to say you can't be useful or have a lot of sucess PvPing before that, but it's a really bad idea to use one toon for a lot for different functions. If you don't want to sub more than one account, just rat on your main toon.
