It's PotM, only time she makes a difference is if your ganking is pushing them against the wall which rarely happens on top tier play. If the other team doesn't panic and plays patiently, PotM's screwed

Not even, warding isn't a catch-all, if you know how to play against a PotM, you can play the bait the gank all game and just counter-gank the entire time. She's damn useless when 2 heroes are missing on the map and towers are still up. You don't even need wards and any PotM player worth anything will switch to a farming role which is subpar compared to the other semi-carries.

If a PotM is making you dump your early gold into wards, then they can pick up ultimate early and switch to a team fight supporter and try for a tower. Then all warding does is to keep you from getting railed and keeps your from farming which is all they really want anyways. I wouldn't ward extensively at all against PotM, because you effectively tied down 2 heroes with it and a PotM farmed or not isn't going to break a game in the current environment.

Ok guys, I have a few questions about HoN before I commit to buying it.

1.

I plan to play the game 90% of the time with a friend of mine. I know that team matchmaking is not yet in the game.

A big draw for me in this game is the ability to rank up to the point where people are more or less knowledgeable about the game (i.e. I don't have leavers every game, don't have "that guy" on my team OR the other team every game etc.).

If we just play non-MM Stats games, can we still eventually "rank up" or did they somehow separate the MM and the regular Stats stuff?

2.

There isn't much information in the OP. I played DoTA a VERY long time ago and was horrible trash. More recently, I've played LoL and have developed basic skills like map awareness, last hitting, teamfight coordination etc. I'm not looking for completely newbie stuff, but I would like some good information sources for things like playstyles with different heroes, basic item build strategy (what do I build against X kind of team etc.), and other stuff that is more related to game-specific knowledge. Where can I find:

a. Good replays of good games.
b. Good VODs of any kind, first person or observer or whatever.

DefMatrixUltra:

1. most people do not use the implemented matchmaking, so the "regular stats stuff" is what actually matters to get in decent games. if you still want to play matchmaking then yes, the ratings are seperated, but as said, most people do not use it and you might have trouble finding good opponents there.

2. go to stats.maide.ca and just check recent games by people with high psr to get good replays, good vods can be found at http://hon.esportmedia.com/ among others. (they are currently unavailable because of a server move, but there are livecasts on weekends and vods should be back up some time soon)

Listening to the casters is like wow, stupidity.

"I don't understand why Yaphets went SnY"

From 5 minutes ago:

"Well since BKB decreases by a second by every use, it's surprising that Yaphets didn't get Dagger"

Well hum, I wonder why he went SnY...

Then they drop the bomb that Puppey and KKY will somehow adapt and have shown adaptability in the past when they are the two most rigid and stubborn players playing.

Prediction for game 2:

Puppey will pick a dumbfuck line-up in an attempt to be "clever" and get rolled for it.

1) The MM and public (regular) game stats are separate, but you rank up in both of them, which will let you play with better players. Public games are similar to iccup, you host a game, people join, you play, and your points (rank) change based on whether you win or lose.

2) I didn't play dota. I, too, played some LoL to learn the basics. HoN is terribly more complicated, faster, and aggressive than LoL though, so dont expect the learning phase to be too easy. There are plenty of decent guides on HoNs website to start you off. As you get better and begin to understand the nuances of the game, you'll realize that guides are often a starting point for new players, and you'll be able to modify the builds you read about depending on the situation.

a) All games played on HoN by any player get saved on HoNs server and are searchable by player and hero name. Say you wanted to learn how to play soulstealer. So you read a guide on him, then search for soulstealer replays by a player you know thats good in the replay section of the official website. You can view the score sheet of the replay before you download it, which means you can decide which replay you want based on how the particular hero does.

You can also browse stats.maide.ca for good games.

b) The main source for VODs is hon.esportmedia.com

I dont know about good FPVods though. I know there are some on youtube. I'd like to watch some too.

I was in the same situation. Played dota a while back, got into league of legends, and now my friend and I decided to switch to HoN. Even with experience from LoL, it is still taking a lot of time to get used to HoN. Not only am I still having to learn all the items and heroes again, its also tough getting used to last hitting in HoN. Its also way easier to get ganked, since you can't just escape with summoner spells.

Yes, you can rank up with non-MM stat games afaik. It affects your psr at least, which is what they use to rank you. Still, I would start with no stats just to learn heroes.

By the way there is much more "basic" stuff in HoN than in LoL. I'm sure you already know about denying, but you'll still have understand how to control where the creeps meet based on how aggressively you last hit and deny. Stuff like creep pulling and creep stacking and counter-warding is also "basic" in HoN but not possible in LoL. Decision making is also often different in HoN, because hero roles are much more defined than in LoL. Anyway, I suggest you look at at least one basic/introductory guide, who knows, it might help ;p

Why go Manta with a Pugna/Lion on the board?
Why go Manta with a ES?

Manta with Blink sure, Manta with BKB is damn pointless against that line up.
