Combat in this game is so fantastically random, but in ways that completely make sense. I was a bit scared of a monkey province (atavis/markatas) just because the numbers were so high, but attacked it last turn. A stray arrow landed on the head of the chieftain on my first volley, killed him, and the whole pack ran away.

Newbie question: If you've got a mercenary company hired and you re-bid on them on the same turn that you use them in combat, if you win the bid are they back up to full strength? What happens if they're wiped out?

Nope they do not get back at full strength. If they get wiped out I'm not sure about your bid (I forget but I believe it doesn't go through) but otherwise you get whatever is left.

I hired a pack of longbowmen on turn 1 that wound up being scarily good at killing things, until their commander derped forward and got his head cut off and they all ran away.

Now I have some cut-rate pack of militia who will hopefully soak up phantasmal warrior hits long enough for the real troops to hack them down...

Wait for 7,5 hours - and vote on Steam for the 4x-bundle to be discounted in that time =) . You might get it for -75% if the 4x-bundle wins vs FP-shooters.
