bala had visa issues or something along those lines. Romance has been winning most recent tournaments from the results i glanced at.
this EVO is a little bit different for me because of all the upsets and results being far more than i could have predicted. for example, i'll be pretty heartbroken if neither tokido or daigo make it to/past the semi's. having all those wrenches thrown in, i'm still looking forward to the finals day and i'll personally be watching the entire day for each and every game.
watching m2k go 10-0 against ken in friendlies and 4-stocking most of them was brutal though. it as like waiting for ken to just stand up and get sick of playing like that, especially with waffles mouthing off on stream so much.
My personal 'cinderella' story would be for a japanese player to win ssfiv. i feel like the entire community as a whole has gotten so much bigger and more professional but at the same time the values may have changed ever so slightly over the years.
Pretty weird definition for a 'cinderella story', considering the 4 Japanese players in Top 8 AE are the 4 of the 5 Original Fighting Game Gods of Japan lol, though I think I understand what you mean. The Japanese have pretty much been doing it the same way for years now, grinding it out in the arcades compared to how it is in Korea. E-sports made Tekken huge there, and CafeID's team support system allows for AE and KoF to thrive without the arcade culture that exists in Japan.
Either way, I want Daigo to body Infiltration like he did in Winner's Final of the SF 25th Anniversary Tourney. Maybe Laugh not being in Infiltration's corner actively coaching him makes him more vulnerable. (Anyone know the specific details? Most people just know that they had a falling out.) Sako vs. Xian I think is the game that determines the winner for AE.

if haitani won playing makoto all the way i'd consider that a kind of cinderella story
that douchebag behind him deserved more than a middle finger. Talking smack right behind someone whilst they're playing is a dog move
That's the FGC. That happens literally every game
Don't think it's like this outside the US.
I saw it happen a few times in Europe already :p And even when I lived in Japan, I heard some people say some disrespectful things about players right behind their backs.

Akuma-matata.
sf4 has ended EVO for pretty much the last 3-4 years now hasn't it? It's pretty much the final bang and nod-off to the most iconic fighting game franchise.
i say cinderella story as a tiny joke. whenever i cheer hard for daigo and the likes at majors, they end up getting knocked into a tough loser's or lose convincingly in the finals despite all the effort getting there. ): but this really goes for anyone out there playing competitively, i just happen to root [more] for the oldschool gamers like valle, choi and many of the japanese players---just like i was hopeful for boxer and much of OGS for starcraft 2.
no matter how hard i wanted daigo to take sf 25th, infiltration winning sfxt (over tokido for the CAR and 25k) and ssf4 was just sick.
i've read lots of what people are saying about laugh and infiltration, but none of it really sounds legit. i guess one idea was that infiltration had a disagreement with laugh about staying on Western Wolves and left while laugh would want to stay, except he had to leave as a result of it because he was part of the infiltration package for WW. that really doesn't make any sense considering the announcement and their parting words with WW.
I don't know. if you're friends, you shake or have some words after a game no matter how bad it went. i can't think of any culture where it would be more respectful to not even congratulate one another. they can save words for after the fact, but showing good sportsmanship on the main stage is pretty important too.
for the ID "Laugh" that was pretttyyyyy much well... might as well have been named LaughAngrily for that game. because his ID was pretty much an oxymoron in conjunction with how he reacted (before, after, and off-stage).
BTW if any mods are reading this thread, i went over the schedule again and i'm pretty sure sunday championship day kicks off at 10am PDT, unless they're doing something for 2 hours before KoF finals?

They were less loud though xD
Literally every game? In what kinda tournaments?
I remember distinctly peoples dissing me during the Guilty Gear WGC 2009 semi-finals :p Or KoF players shouting «you're bad and you should feel bad !» at a Stunfest a few years ago.
In Japan I didn't see this kind of comportment in tournament though, being it rankings or the Tougeki, but in the arcades... xD

That's only two times though
Yeah, Japanese arcade are definitely different from tournaments. I can get loud in there. Mostly it's all fun but sometimes...happens, when you are hours and hours in there.

CVS2-days Laugh was a dick. It was cool he did shit back then like translation articles, guides, and videos for CVS2, but he's always seemed like someone I wouldn't particularly enjoy in company outside of moral support/giving me tips before/after matches.
But anyway, AE top 8 is going to be wild. Xian/Sako, Tokido/Rog, Daigo/Infiltration. Three huge storyline/rivalrys right there.

The EVO schedule says it starts in an hour and a half. http://i.imgur.com/v6ZqPaZ.png Apparently someone assumed it was starting same time as previous days.
