Age Of Wushu is a f2p sandbox PvP-oriented Martial Arts MMORPG developed by Snail Games, hugely successful in China and currently in beta for the western world. It takes place in ancient China during the Ming dynasty, and players must master techniques from various schools of martial arts to protect themselves and forge their destiny in the....

No really, what is AoW?
Star Wars Galaxies + EVE Online, set in China, with Kung-Fu styles/schools instead of Jedi/Bounty Hunter/etc. You can PK anybody, kidnap players and sell them to the black market + Show Spoiler +
When you log out, your character wanders around the world like an NPC doing various jobs. Offline players can be kidnapped and sold for in-game currency to shady dealers
, get thrown in jail, get publicly executed, burn down enemy guild halls, rob player-escorted caravans, grief your heart out or form alliances and hunt criminals. Basically, It isn't just another "lol Chinese MMO" game. It is F2P with microtransactions, but very little to no "pay-to-win" aspects. It is very complex, so I will try to keep this short and skim over most of the details.

Schools:
+ Show Spoiler +

You can choose from one of eight schools, but you have the ability to eventually learn every skill in the game regardless of your starting class.

Shaolin
+ Show Spoiler +
Shaolin are warrior monks who have given up their life posessions in order to become spiritually at balance with themselves and to learn the arts of shaolin kung fu. They specialize in Palm and Staff style combats, consisting of huge damage output and an impressive toolkit of AoEs, stuns, knockdowns and knockbacks.
Long Style Boxing: This is their primary PvP set, a Palm style that consists of AoE stuns, knockdowns and a very powerful charged knockback. It has strong combo capabilities and is easily capable of shutting down small groups for short periods of time.
Bhodidharma's Stick: This Staff style specializes in doing AoE damage and being the most annoying Shaolin set, juggling enemies in the air with short-cooldown knockbacks.
Weutuo Stick Skill: The most damaging set, this Staff style focuses on a single target with amazing charge capabilities, but gives up a lot of versatility for pure output.

Wudang
+ Show Spoiler +
Residing in the Wudang Mountain range, members of this sect ascribe to the tenets of internal balance. Using Single Sword and Double Sword styles, Wudang incorporate buddhist and taoist teachings to form a defensively dominating style that can drain opponents and make themselves impossible to kill.
Taiji Sword: This Single Sword style is the Wudang's most defensive, focusing on single-target damage and large Rage attacks while being nearly impossible to kill. They are capable of trading out their health and internal force, as well as regenerating internal force at will.
Yin Yang Sword:
Breeze Sword:

Emei
+ Show Spoiler +
Considered one of the 'Three Large Doors' of Wushu, the Emei is a sect that only accepts female practicioners. Through the use of Dagger, Palm and Double Dagger style, Emei are masters of retaliation, punishing enemies by draining them, knocking them down and finishing them off with a single lethal blow.
Rosy Cloud Stab: This Dagger style is their defensive "turtle" style, punishing opponents by draining away their internal power, leaving them useless in combat.
Golden Diamond Soft Palm: Focusing on ranged, this Palm style slows opponents and knocks them down, while giving the Emei crazy amounts of damage reduction.
Departing Sting Manual: The most popular style, this Double Dagger "berserker" style builds stacks of buffs to unleash damage that can kill players in a single slash.

Scholars
+ Show Spoiler +
Good-guy smartypants, similar to Wudang in appearance.
Strong AoE (spin2win). Single-sword.

Beggars
+ Show Spoiler +
No matter where you come from, there will always be beggars. The Beggars' Sect is a school devoted to taking in poor people and teaching them the ways of kung fu to defend China from outside invaders. Using Stick and Palm styles, beggars brutalize their opponents with knockbacks and air denial, while turning any battle hilarious by spitting alcohol in their faces and getting them drunk.
Crying Stick: The most infamous of the Beggar styles, this Stick style focuses on becoming increasingly more drunk as the Beggar fights. Using this style, a Beggar is capable of spewing wine into the faces of their enemies and rendering them too drunk to fight, as well as snare them and drain their internal force.
Lotus Palm: Widely considered to be their most effective style, this Palm style is a Beggar's most direct combat style. Utilizing several knockbacks, this style will keep opponents in the air and primed for a brutalizing aerial groundslam.
Spirit Snake Stick: This Stick style utilizes poisons and toxins to give Beggars an upperhand in dungeon combat. Using a combination of knockdowns and poisons, a Beggar is capable of quickly stacking poisons on large groups of enemies to clear a room fast.

Tangmen
+ Show Spoiler +
Tangmen are a mysterious sect run by the Tang Family, a group of assassins who specialize in highly toxic contact poisons. Specializing in Daggers and Hidden Weapons, Tangmen are the most reviled school in the game for their ability to utterly kill at range or demolish opponents with single target damage.
Golden Snake Sting:This Dagger style focuses on single target damage, using ranged stuns and speed boosts to keep out of danger, while closing in for the kill with a powerful Rage.
Vertigo Dart: This Hidden Weapon style is the Tangman's most infamous style, using entirely ranged attacks to break blocks and kill targets. Tangmen are fully capable of moving while attacking, making them extremely difficult to chase down and kill in this style.
Shadow Chasing Sting: This Dagger style is mainly PvE. It uses poison clouds to damage enemies while increasing teammates' dodging and damage, while having decent damage output and an AoE finisher.

Royal Guards
+ Show Spoiler +

The Royal Guards are the secret police whom serve the Emporer and follow his instructions to rid the world of all martial artists. They are adept at chasing people down and preventing them from fleeing with the use of Chains or their Eagle Claw style. They are also able to put out reliable DPS using their Sword style.
Soul Chasing Claw: A long-range Chain style that relies on stunning their opponents or pulling them towards them.
Eagle Claw: A Palm style mainly used for PvE due to their ability to put life steal on an enemy. They also can life steal for themselves, chase others down, and have several knock downs with a powerful followup attack.
Soul Losing Blade: This Sword style is mainly melee with a reliable ranged DPS ability. The majority of this style is based around being able to disable their opponent by knocking them down.

Wanderer's Valley
+ Show Spoiler +
Lead by a doomed man, a headmaster destined to die of poison at the age of 40, the Wanderer's Valley is a school dedicated to taking from everyone what was denied to them. Utilizing Palm, Twin Blade and Twin Dagger styles, Wanderers mix in lethal poisons and flesh-eating insects they breed in the flesh of their arms.
Wind-Catching Blade: This Twin Blade style specializes in keeping enemies locked down with Shock, unable to use abilities or block for 5 seconds. It can also knock enemies back from a large range and has a very strong ranged DPS attack.
Bone Corrosion Palm: Dealing a mix of single target and AoE damage, this Palm style disables enemies, throwing down fields of stunning poison and firing off short-range cone attacks and debuffs. This style mainly focuses on being a punishing PvP group style.
Perish Blade: Dealing mainly in AoE damage, this Twin Dagger style reduces their health drastically to increase their damage two- or three-fold. They inject themselves with poisons to increase damage by 100%, add lifesteal or increase movement speed.

(Credit to the SA thread for these descriptions.)

Life Skills (Crafting)
+ Show Spoiler +

As with most sandbox games, a plethora of crafting is available. All gear is player-crafted, and the market is entirely player-driven.

Gathering:
Mining, Hunting, Farming, Woodcutting, Fishing

Production:
Tailoring, Chef, Poisonmaker, Blacksmith, Craftsman. Herbalist,

Social:
Musician, Weiqi (Go) player, Calligrapher, Painter

Market:
Beggar (this is hilarious by the way), Divinator (fortune teller)

Combat:
+ Show Spoiler +

AoW has a rock-paper-scissors based combat system consisting of Blocking, Attacking, and Feinting. Every style of martial arts has different skills in these categories.

Combine this with air-dashes, ground-dashes, walking up walls and across water; you have a very complex system in a deceptively simple package.

Here are some videos to illustrate what a typical duel will look like:

Waiting for the wiki to update to add nicer, more detailed info.

In-game, add "IU" (capitalization matters) and I'll answer any questions.

Closed beta won't be wiped. Might as well start now!

However, during closed beta, free players only have 10 hours + 1hr per day allowed, so yeah if you want to play a lot as a free player open beta might be best.

Your character works as a slave for the shopowner that you were sold to. You don't earn money while doing this.

When you log on, you can pay a small amount of silver to get rid of this status, allowing you to once again log off and earn money from legitimate jobs again.

This seems very cool. I've always loved HK-movies and find this setting of chinese history especially intruiging. I also like the sound of the market being player-driven and the gear player-crafted.

I also find it hillarious and awesome that players are turned into NPCs who run around doing NPC stuff when you're offline, however, I'm sure that'll be avoided through some perma-online bullshit or something by most of the players. I feel the "Right, time for bed, gotta log." *logs on the next day, in slave market* "What the hell?!"-thing would be hillarious to experience.

But yea, definately checking this out.

this game is quite completx and very different from the average MMO but is not noob friendly at all. It doesn't help that the translation is spotty. If anyone is going to give it a try, play on Red Phoenix server as that just opened up so there aren't any player characters from the beta with a head start on there.

Quests arn't that important the only ones that matter atm are the storyline quests and the school quests after that its about doing spy missions, Team Practices and working on your profession and skills while cultivating your school inner to progress try doing some of the events like script defend and forbidden instances to keep you busy 2.

Also goto chengdu if you're looking to merchant and try to make money, youll start to learn prices and get an idea of what s always in demand and how much to sell things and what may be more profitable items to have.

I just started playing this when red phoenix server launched and im really impressed. This is a sandbox game, meaning not everyone will enjoy it. I almost quit after 2h, then again after 8h, i had 600ping for the first day so everything was just warping around and i didnt like pretty much anything. 6 days later I'm really glad I didnt quit.
just watch this video, for backgroundstory:
http://www.twitch.tv/excessiveprofanity/b/391733592?t=213m55s
straight into the chase:
http://www.twitch.tv/excessiveprofanity/b/391733592?t=219m55s

here's what i think about it:
pros:
+ f2p but not p2w. the VIP service does grant you 30% more exp, which means you wont get to the very very top without it but you can still get really high because:
+ levels dont matter that much. even a group of lvl1 guys can stunlock people.
+ no hc grinding. anyone who just does daily spy quests and does teampractices will stay up in levels. (this takes 1,5h a day if you know what you're doing). grinding does give you more meridian exp but they dont make THAT much of a difference
+ lots and lots of pvp
+ pvp is skillbased
+ pvp
+ really complicated. there's so many things to learn about this game

cons:
- really complicated. some of the things arent taught anywhere so you just have to find them out yourself. also some of the translations are really bad. this makes the game really unfriendly for beginners.
- ui looks and feels bad (graphics are great tho)
- really high number of goldsellers and they spam most of the chatchannels. you can create custom chatchannels to help but you cant completely block them
- main story isnt ready yet. some skills havent been implimented yet. the whole game isnt ready yet. this is also a good thing because we know that theres tons of things left to come

it has potential to be the best mmo i've played. right now its buggy. its not ready. im still enjoying it.

Iam playing this game for a couple of days now, and i agree with myti that this game is not that beginner friendly and the ui is kind of strange, but that should not be reasons not to play this game as I really enjoy it.

If anyone has a guild opened on red phoenix server pm me please

Well especially when they're using bots to try and bypass marketing the game through proper channels.....shady.

Personally I'll hold out for Blade & Soul's launch outside of Korea which looks fairly similar.

I play it as well since Red Phoenix launch. But I'm about to quit since I learned that an EU version is in the works and it will be released "soon". And I prefer playing with under 500ms ping in a PvP game.

i think ive seen myti in game a few times haha.

currently rank 1 constable on Red Phoenix, ill give some of my pro's and cons of the game so far.

Free to play. full stop this is amazing, you get to play the game for free. however a f2p player has to make some effort to keep up with VIP players. but i remember a post on official forums i dug up that did the math, that even a VIP player putting 100$ into the game a week will have no more then a 20% leveling speed advantage.

second point which could be seen as bad and good. Buying gold in this game (30 gold to vip, this is $9 US) can be directly changed into Taels (trade able currency) one good thing about this is there is a potential incentive and a potential income for snail through this. The bad thing.. basic economics, if u print enough money shit gets real expensive. GOOD THING HOWEVER 1 gold = 10 liang. that's 300 liang for 9 dollars. that's a somewhat reasonable exchange rate considering i can get 200 a day doing bounty hunting + kidnapping. The kidnapping aspect however is really only considered a reliable income for VIP players though as iirc f2p players get less tael per kidnap.

now another good and bad thing. 1 man cant take on more then 2 with reasonable chances of success. Myti said levels dont matter much.. well they do, i can burst down 1-2 people in a 3 man group before their group advantage becomes too apparent but thats only when level difference is huge. the bad aspect of it would be for players used to games such as RIFT. where a certain spec could just tear through 3-4 people and come out more then 80% hp.

BIggest concern on server atm is school balance (essentially like classes but ofc u can learn anything in the game with time). since the server is still at 1st inner stage, Royal guards wreck face, that is arguably the most devastating school at the current level. Why? because they have a ranged chain attack. no wait 3, 1 that pulls u, 1 that stuns u AND breaks guard, and one thats just regular. At the moment only a relatively small few have the flying skill to compete with RGS (goose step ground dash essentially). Anyone without it is just at a huge id say instant 60% less chance to win just because of it.

Though this balances out as the server gears up. Royal guards sorta get outclassed at higher inners etc so nothing will change about the class.

Only other balance squabble is Tangmen. but a nerf was layed down on china server for them so eventually it will trickle down to us. But for those not in the know Tangman can run dash etc whilst hitting u from long range whilst slowing u down so if u decide to run u cant. king of open world pvp atm, though u can wreck them so bad if u catch them.

another Good|bad point. Sandbox = do whatever the fuck you want. Good because...i can do whatever the fuck i want. sometimes i spend 3 hours straight hunting criminals across the whole world, for no less then 10 liang haha. the other day we decided to lock up guild escorts for 30 minutes, essentially just whatever we want and its fun fun fun fun. BAD however. because those players who dont have that motivational drive to do something and need content spoon fed wont enjoy the game. lets be honest though...isnt that a good thing <3

As myti said. bugs bugs bugs bugs bugs. so many bugs. but things are being ironed out. some can be a hude distraction but rarely game breaking. and if u do encounter one of them, contact gm support ingame load up an alt and do some gathering to pass time. multi clienting IS allowed.

another bad thing as myti pointed out. THE UI O M F G though for myself i feel its fine EXCEPT ONE CRUCIAL THING

we play MMOs to talk to people. WHY THE FUCK IS THE CHAT SO BAD. its just so hard to read, even when u set to 100% transparency it just goes back to 0 randomly. u cant change colors its just terrible.

i have so much more to write but i feel this is completely void of grammar so ill stop here. ill make a post every nown and again of my constable huntings <3

If anyone wants to play with me I'm KtheZ on the phoenix server. I am going to farm/tailor.
I am a beggars sect member.

I have no idea what prices are but I enjoy merching

Teamliquid guild has been made! Pm me or Slow Motion for an invite.

Personally I think this game has many flaws (especially its comically poor localization) but if you get over that the game mechanics are relatively solid. I like how there is always something to do, and you can do other things while you play the game, since it doesn't require a lot of attention.

Merching is fun too but the market is pretty small.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/the-art-of-wushu-the-right-stats-for-each-style/ neat little article I found to figure out some of the quirks in the translation/game mechanics stat wise.

I like this game. It's got bugs, quirks and the localization is hilariously bad but the fighting is fun, the open world is fun and I've been more interested in it then anything else of late.

Answer me this please. The only way to get food is to buy it from other players with unbound currency. (or be a chef) Getting unbound currency seems really hard though. I have to kidnap people, which is not good for me since I'm on a good school, or sell items myself, but why would anyone ever use their precious unbound currency to buy garbage items of me?

Is there a way to get unbound currency without having to go on the market?

To answer your question sash the ONLY ways to get unbound silver is Kidnapping/Bounties/Buying Snail Gold.
although you want to avoid the market, if u need small time little money, go chop trees or mine iron for an hour, sell all of it at player stalls in chengdu which should give u enough to fund food for a few days. As you start running more Tv instances you'll start getting more items to sell etc. Though i would HIGHLY recommend you do school script stealing events, id recommend trying to get the emei parry skill books. THEY WILL SELL FOR ALOT.

I have quit the game for three reasons.

1. My constable endeavors were being screwed over by people abusing the system, that is when someone got a bounty they would just teleport to their guild town and let a constable in their guild take the kill and split the bounty. This literately cut my bounties per day to a 1/3 what it was and makes my game experience not as fun.

2. i got hit by a 5 day account freeze. Spent 1.2 ding (money i earned from selling scripts and bounties) on the best wep you can get right now (12-22 with 4 bonuses atm) and got auto flagged for freeze. Got my account back but i missed out on 5 days of TP/cult/exp/everything.

3. Even after getting my account back i have nothing to level. since server is capped at first internal for another week or 2 atm all my cult is being used on stuff i wont ever be using. This is also topped with the fact that since im playing wanderer valley, i dont shine till at least 2nd inner lvl 26. Compared to RG/Tang atm i just cant stand equal footing against anyone unless they are under leveled or just retarded at the game compared to myself.

Overall i love this game and want to play it, but things are just leaving a poor taste in my mouth. I feel its less an issue with the game thats making me not want to play it and more about the people managing the game.
Forever ZeNEX.
