im not sure what advice there is to give ^^ if you free time then get it for sure, pokemon is always a fun way to wind down and relax as its very stress free. You will also probably be blown away by how much it has progressed if that's the last time you played...but there is a lot of new features in this one so even people that have played forever are confused at first. | ||

I'll echo what the other poster said. Any generation of pokemon can be picked up pretty much without having played a previous one. There's minor overlap in post game content but its so insignificant that it doesn't make a difference if you knew that or not. | ||

I never played any 4th gen games as I never had a DS (only got my 3DS this year) so I can't really judge it, the amount of post-game content in Ruby/Sapphire was enough to make up for the pretty bad flow of the story. I really enjoyed playing the 3rd gen meta though. I think I spent a lot more time on NetBattle than actually playing the handheld games during 3rd gen. | ||
