This weekend through Monday night is going to be a tournament for In the Groove for the top players in the world. In the groove (itg) is similar to DDR, but it is far harder. To put it into perspective, people playing this weekend will be playing songs that force the player to move at over 14 steps per second for minutes at a time. Both footspeed and stamina will be tested with a song pack picked the push each player to their limit.
The rules and format are posted on the stream, as well as the times for specific players.
The stream is: http://www.twitch.tv/bearpocalypse
Fun fact: EGSuppy plays ITG for fun and visited the stream chat yesterday, as a mid master zerg player this was really cool for me :p Last year Day[9] watched a lot of the tournament as well.
It's really fun to watch and there's a great group of people playing and watching in the chat, so visit the stream and have a good way to close the new year!
Players competing: GG, Zetorux, Dark Xuxa, Aoreo, Steve Reen, Rynker, Rawinput Krushrpants, ViVi88, WinDEU,Captain Black, Mulletman, Archi. Arvin, and Mad Matt
p.s. I'm not entirely sure if this will be a thread that is looked too highly upon, so if it is not it's fine if it is locked and I apologize.

I'll certainly suggest anyone with even a tiny bit of interest in machine dance gaming to check it out. These guys are the best of the best, you won't see this level of play often!
|
WINDEU HATES YOU.
That is all. gl hf with tourney!
|
Haha sick sick sick ITG is awesome :D Hope it starts getting more popular!
|
Does anyone even have a shot at beating mad Matt? I noticed on aij rynker has been posting some really sick scores but mad Matt seems too good.
Edit: fack I missed it this is what I get for moving without checking on dance games much anymore

Thats amazing and I'd love to watch this but my only question is, how in the actual hell can you dance 14 steps a second, that is crazy... I guess kinda like tap dancing.. ?

While the bar helps and is preferred by most, it's not the "only" way to play this well. Constant practice and extreme dedication. I was big into the scene back when I was in high school, circa 05-07ish. These guys have been playing for many years. Same as training for any other physical activity.
Edit: Here's Mad Matt's youtube channel, if some are interested to check out a top player http://www.youtube.com/user/Sigatrev
Im kinda bummed I missed it. I'll have to see some highlights.

GOD I wish that we had an ITG cabinet close to my house. Sadly I only play on the keyboard. Kinda bummed that I missed this tourney...

Not even just bar holding, they have to minimize their feet movements to be able to go quickly as the simfiles requires now a days.
I miss back in the days when holding the bar was considered bad lol, like pre-ddrmax days =[

idk this is flamebait

It's not flamebait. It's truth. The timing window is tighter and the max difficulty is higher. In ddr the hardest songs are easy in itg.
For those who want to watch still, the stream has VoDs available. I highly recommend AoReos set. His play was inspirational. Highlight of the event to me. Zetorux and Mad Matt were insane as usual.
Zetorux won overall, Mad Matt won the 8th Era, and GG won lists of struggle. Zetorux won overall over Mad Matt by less than .25%. Considering it's out of a possible 1200% that's prettyyyyyyyyyy insane how close it was. It was a great event.

No comments about PIU since I don't really know anything about it other than knowledge of DDR did not transfer over at all the few times I played on vacations lolol~
In general how I saw the difficulties (timing window aside) as such:
Easier <> Harder DDR (before Supernova) <> ITG ~= DDR (after Supernova) <> User Created
Hardest songs in early DDR (looking around the time of ~Extreme) were similar to 9-10 ratings in ITG. Then Supernova came around and shoved high bpm + nonsensical stream to 'match' top ITG difficulties 10-13ish(?). Then there are the user created stepfiles where you now see ratings of 18. I really only see ITG cabinets modded to add songs... so maybe people are just considering user created to be ITG?
Though, just to jab at DDR, the groups I played with generally considered ITG stepfiles to be more well made. While Supernova brought the difficulty up... some of the files just didn't make sense at all to me (see Pluto Relinquish on Doubles =/). ITG had a lot of fun charts for doubles. Supernova was rather meh.

Funny part is that I have met all the guys at the Fort Rapids tournament that happens. I've been playing since I was in high school (about 8 years now) and I still play every other day :D
Loved the stream, watched it most of the weekend it was live.

Also, the bold part, that's pretty much the impression I get lol
