Did anyone here play Quake 1 competitively? I personally had the best multiplayer online experience during the period I played Quake 1. Quake1 was the single largest contributor to FPS/Clans/Mods/Tournaments-for-prizes. The competitive scene of Quake 1 was launched when John Romero, programmer for iD, offered his Ferrari if any player could win the tournament they had and beat him 1v1 (Romero was probably top5 at the time, and Thresh crushed him.) For those who don\'t know, Quake 1 was being played competitively from appx. 1995 - 2001. Much of the Quake 1 community didn\'t stop to play Quake 2 and only after a year or two of Quake 3 did much of the community finally fizzle. For those CS players who didn\'t know; Quake also set the standard for strategic team based clan matches. On the map DM3 you had a perfectly balanced map for 3v3 and 4v4 that played host to some of the hottest FPS team vs team action you will ever see. As some Starcraft afficianados might like to know, map/weapon control was a huge aspect of this game's strategy. Tell me what you think/remember.

it was awesome
i remember the first few series of CTF maps were fucking awesome, and Q1 had such godly custom DM maps, it's a waste none of these maps get play in modern games.. a huge waste. the rocket launcher to this day is just the best play, period... the game had good feel everywhere. it was the biggest multiplayer game ever at the time, i think it set the stage for everything else in terms of competition and whatnot. before it, u had diablo, which was really just hack using kiddies, and u could play games on kali, but the commities were relatively small. starcraft was the next big game i moved to from Q1. everything else is just background games that don't really stick in a multiplayer sense. or a contuation of the quake1 community (moved to Q2, moved to HL a little. whatever)

i started playing QuakeWorld a month ago, it's coo. reminds me of Doom, but i like it better. i also like how you can control Winamp from inside the game, from choosing your songs and the volume, so you dont have to alt + tab.

Umm, you can control winamp in every game by setting global hotkeys, right?

would be cool if some blizzard guys offered their cars to fans who could beat them... guess gaming has evolved a lot since then, while the relationship between manufacturers and hardcore fans died off. i think outside of korea, none of the gaming programmers could name the top3 players of any game he made.

It was actually John Carmack who put up his Ferrari, but it wasn't for a personal competition. It was a friendly launch tournament. Anyway, Quake 1 was great. I played DM a lot against bots and some friends, and I really enjoyed speedrunning in co-op mode too. I lost the game, unfortunately. If anyone still knows, tell me where I can pick it up =)

I played it until one year ago. Now I just follow it, watching important games and demos. Still chatting some on quakenet too.
ps. QW isnt dead, atleast if you live in Europe. There is a large Qw-only-lan in Stockholm 2-5 January and there are duel leauges and team leagues going right now.

Quake with more recent graphical updates like fuhQuake is awesome. I'm way to new to have played Q1 during it's glory days, and a major obstacle for me was that I could barely see what was going on because of the putrid graphics. Too bad it's dead in the US, I wouldn't mind playing it. It's straightforward and simple, but effective IMO.
|
I dont play it competitively, since I'm just learning it, but i have to say that it is surprisingly strategic :o The weapons also have a great feel to them, unlike some fps where you cant tell how much damage you did to the guy.

the best of q1/qw is the movement and the speed. :>

is any1 else getting this message?? when i try and start the game it says : W_LoadWadfile: couldn't loadgfx.wad anyone know what it is? i googled it but i can't find it.

The quake client that has the best graphics is JoeQuake. It's frequently updated. Combine that with Fuh's textures and you basically have about equal graphics as quake 3 (that is, if you like Quake I)

I've played a lot of quakeworld. honestly I put more effort into becoming good at qw than I have ever put into becoming good at bw.
I once beat some guy at norway's national team but I really wasn't ever at a nation team level myself and most of the time I got raped.
but the maps were awesome.. dm3 for teamplay and dm4 for 1v1.. dm4 in particular rocked so much. even the previous time I played quakeworld (like 2-3 years ago) I was more concentrated during that than I am during 95% of my bw games. and I really don't understand how cs caught on, qw is soo much better. =[

I prefer DM6 and DM2 (armor galore) to DM4. DM2 would be perfect if it had a LG somewhere.
Imho, DM4 lends itself to too much spam.
|
Also, I prefered Quake in software mode though I had the original Voodoo card.
Classic and retro style :-)

dm2 was a lot of fun but it was too large for 1v1 imo.. it didnt have the constant action that I loved about qw.. dm6 was fun but just.. totally being in the zone on dm4 and controlling near the shaft and then just throwing grenades into every spawn location you heard him spawn at.. so much fun. dm6 was my #2 preferred map tho.

i wish i was more into the fps scene and could watch vids of thresh, i heard he was unmatched
|
Norway28606 Posts
from having talked to people who were top 3 norwegian quakeworld players (we had a lan at my house which 2 of them attended! ), thresh was indeed incredible but he was only unmatched in northern america. the problem is that due to this being like 8+ years ago, the connections sucked, and europeans didn't play all that much with americans, and when they did the ping would never be below 100, usually like 200+, and that's just too much ping to compete with. imagine tank vs goon popping with extra high latency or something and then make it even worse than that..
either way thresh was not considered godly by the guys I talked to, at least not on qw. but it's been so long my memory isn't the greatest.
|
D11-Thresh (best in world/US) vs BilloX (best in UK)
thresh totally embarrased billox 56 to -1
but you should see some Immortal demos hes the best railer ive ever seen.
EDIT: that was Q2 :p Thresh dominates both game
|
Braavos36374 Posts
haha i love how fps if you're better than someone the score is so outrageous... you can completely dominate... sucks that its so hard to watch though, it'd be so huge if it was as watchable as bw
|
Norway28606 Posts
yes I heard in q2 thresh did in dominate.. but the quake players I've talked to said he never dominated quakeworld in the world as a whole. that you could easily justify saying he's top 3 or something but that comparing best in europe and best in usa really wasn't possible because of the huge pings people received..
and honestly in quakeworld it's possible to win 20-0 against someone who was just as good as yourself.

and honestly in quakeworld it's possible to win 20-0 against someone who was just as good as yourself. I think this is true of most FPS games. There are just days when your reflexes are abnormally good, and you own people who you would normally be on equal standing with.

and quake games in particular because the advantage you get from winning the first fight is, when both players are really good and able to know where someone is just based on teleportation sounds and picking up stuff can often give you another 4-5 quick frags. especially on dm4 which was the coolest map
but yes it also holds true because speed and accuracy is such an important aspect, and those depend more on daily shape than your ability to strategize.
|
quake 2 kinda sucked imo t.t it took away all the speed and fast gameplay q1 had.. i loved how all of that reappeared in q3.. i probably enjoyed q3 most off all (maybe because i was relatively good at it, better than i've ever been at bw ;D)..
havent tried q4 yet tho and i'll probably never get to it T.T
wish i was still young and a hardcore gaming nerd :D good old tmies
|
Q4 seems way slower to me. It's still Quake, but the movement speed and weapons almost feel gimped. Of course, it's new, but when I watch some good demos of Q4 it's not nearly as impressive as QW/Q3 demos. I don't think anyone in Q4 really bhops, it's pointless because the maps force you to lose speed very fast. Rocket jumping and other things also seem greatly diminished.
|
Norway28606 Posts
oh that sucks. rocket jumping is part of why qw is so awesome. and there's so much cool trickjumping you can do..
|
ppl dont really realize how much strategy is going on in a DM, but thats why they suck. every game is strategy. thats why its gay to call something a "strategy game" thats just like saying "well the game's not fun but it's deep", fuck that...

I was a big fan of Quake III...
In fact, I think I will re-install it after my test today and frag some people online ^^

how did guys like zero4 and fatality ranked up against thresh? the last tournament i observed had two russians beating everyone, i think that was the million man lan in USA? the russians are lakerman and alex? oh yeah.. this is q3 btw.
|
I beat fatality at quake1. I also beat Matador. They were in the top echilon of quake1 players at the end of their runs though, First of all, DM6 has always been the standard, best balanced Q1 map. DM4 is very random. Many times a player will get trapped in the bottom rl area which leads to a standoff where he dies upon trying to 'break out'. Furthermore, even in matches between top players lava deaths that upset the balance of power happen frequently. Secondly, NO ONE EVER proved themselves better than Thresh in ANY match 1v1 in Quake1. Thirdly, I have recently jumped back into the mix and there is a fresh batch of skilled players in North American Quake1 as well as tournaments and clan leagues. Lastly, I challenge anyone on this forum to a 3 game 1v1 match! Game in 20. P.S. Thresh never dominated QW because he didn't play it. (at all) The real competition was in NetQuake and QW changed the physics of Quake. Furthermore, when the Swedish clan played Death Row on Lan it was in Europe, the death row players were in different rooms while the swedish players were all talking in the same room, death row had jet lag, and the Swedish players still got PWNED when they played the netquake matches. P.P.S. Almost all the great replays are still available from Team games to 1v1. Try Quakeworld.us as a starting point.

thx a lot its works fine now
|
That DR lost to 9 does not tarnish Thresh's image as the legendary dueler.
Dennis was way ahead of his time in terms of understanding the strategic aspects of dueling; he could seemingly read minds and stay two steps ahead of his opponents
|
jea thanks alot for that. works fine now.

iirc quake 2 is open source?
if thats the case, is there any xp version of q2?

Cheers for the links guys

How did they get owned on netquake? They played five matches of Netquake and five matches of Quakeworld. The end score was 8-2 in favour of Nine, losing one on each setting.

FPSes are really really fun to me, but at the same time frustrating.
Being good at an FPS can't be learned, it's just play play play play play.
|
I could get into quake 1 and doom , but find CS very boring. Quake 3 i didn't mind , i think its because those games are fastest and less realistic (= imo more fun)
|
are there any free servers to play i cant find any
|
I remember it being Death Row who only lost one game on NQ.
