Seems like this is the kind of game you have to play a lot of to really enjoy it. Anyone that could explain what makes this game so fun for them? probably same reason people play every other MMO. to feel badass running around killing stuff with a super strong dude/girl!

The Transmog system in WoW lets you be a little more unique, I'd loooove to see a system like that pop up in ... well, every MMO, but FF14 for sure :D e: Definitely agree that the combat could use some work, but overall the game seems like it'll be a good way to spend some time with my friends. Mostly just excited cause a bunch of my old FF11/WoW friends are coming to try it out :D

I still don't really know how the materia system in ffxiv works, at all. The instruction manual on beta site doesn't say much. Does anyone know a decent guide or anything that explains it? Basically how do you get the materia and affix it to your gear. You need to meld it or something? What kind of stats are on it etc. Would be appreciated.

You need to meld it or something? What kind of stats are on it etc. Would be appreciated. This is long, but explained it pretty comprehensively for me. Here's a long ass TLDR: as you use gear it gets spiritbonded. At 100% spiritbond you can convert gear into materia, provided you have the appropriate craft levelled. Materia conversion consumes the gear. That materia can be affixed to gear by a crafter, with use of a catalyst. You get catalysts from the gathering classes. You can affix more materia than there are slots on an item via 'advanced materia melding', but the attempt can fail (think 40% chance of success for your first advanced meld, 20% second etc.). Failure consumes the materia & catalyst. Finally, there are item level-based stat caps. I presume this encourages you to diversify your items stats, rather than stacking +crit materia on an item with innate +crit, for example, as well as limiting equipment power/materia stacking. The lodestone has some info on how the system changed from 1.0, as well as all the materia currently in for launch. I probably missed stuff, so feel free to correct me anyone.

Failure consumes the materia & catalyst. So the item itself doesn't blow up now? In 1.1 if you fail you lose everything, including original item and materia on it, also the odds were significantly lower, 2nd materia only had success rate of 10-20%, making anything beyond 2 materia extremely rare and expensive (like only a handful of people in each server has them).

Nope, that silly systems gone. As I said, the lodestone has all the changes here, including that, the 'max values' stuff, how 1.0 materia/equipment transitions and so on. The stat cap comes across as a much better limiter for the materia system to me. Then again, I lost interest in 1.0 after really briefly trying its beta, so I don't know much about how it's systems actually played out. As for the odds, that was just based on some lower level beta screens, so it might be different at max level with high rank materia

Even with everyone max craft can still make a decent profit make stuff, which can't be said for other MMOs. I wonder what will be the new way to keep market stable. You had to craft tons of weapon/armor and spiritbond farm a majority of the time. Though if you had an efficient party like ours, you could clear out camps in no time with a bunch of Marauders and complete whole sets quickly. Before they nerfed steel cyclone you can get lvl 40-50 in an hr lol Though the best place to materia is the ant boss at Cutter's Cry, hold princess/marshal and let them heal up and kill pops, can get 10 full set per run.

It's mostly just forum regulars arguing amongst each other over silly shit. was just there this morning before I posted that question ;p Killing ifrit ff11 forums died a long time ago, doesn't look like 14 is doing much better judging by post dates.

On topic though. FFXIV is good. Many times better than 1.0. However, I'm finding questing to be a bit of a pain. I pick up quests, and then have a hard time finding out where they actually are. I think it's because I opted to play the beta on my PS3, and navigating the UI on the PS3 is like pulling teeth sometimes. I really should just play it on my computer I guess. So much for relaxing on my couch and playing.

![]() It's surprisingly even in regards to non-legacy NA servers, though some seem to favor greater populations of EU/JP than others. I'm leading towards Gilgamesh myself since higher population servers tend to have more people around to do events with and more balanced economies.
