February 7th, 2012 shall forever be known as the DAY OF RECKONING!
That's right folks, I'll be doing an 8 hour streamathon for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning on February 7th! However, streaming single player games can be oh so lonely. So, we’re going to make a big social game out of it. I’ve invited 8-15 well-known gamers to simultaneously live-stream themselves playing and to share prizes with their audiences!! (That's YOU).
LE EVENT STORY I love playing games, but given my time constraints, I must be selective! KoA:Reckoning seemed like a game that was right up my alley: open world RPG with bright colors and a badass combat system. Moreover, I love Todd McFarlane. He's the art director. How can I resist? :D
So, I reached out to 38 Studios (the developer) to see if I could have rights to stream the game on release day (similar to what I did with Skyrim). They kindly gave me the rights to stream, at which point I wondered how many of my friends were also excited for the game. As it turns out, pretty much all of them! So, rather than all game in isolation, I decided to organize a massive simultaneous streamathon where we all play the game at the same time!
38 Studios was so excited to hear about it that they threw in a ton of amazing prize giveaways (see below!). Since things were rapidly growing, I figured why not have a special web page where you could go to see everyone that was streaming and get updates and the like? Because this whole event is somewhat last minute, the webpage is being produced as we speak. I'll be posting a link to it as soon as it's done!
As you can tell, I take my fun very seriously.
WHAT GAME? Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is an open world 3rd person action RPG.
THE TEAM: 1. Ken Rolston, the Lead Designer of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 2. R. A. Dear god Day[9] is officially the biggest esports if not video game community figure. The company is giving him a few grand worth of prizes just because so many people watch his stream, no matter the game. This is one of the most awesome things I have ever seen, good job sir, good job!
Next tuesday is going to be a heck of a lot of fun and I can't wait to tune in. Edit: Tiny warning to those who don't know much about the game and want to play the demo. The code is like 3 months old and was outsourced for the demo so it has a variety of bugs some of which are hilarious and others game breaking and fail. That said, if your demo experience runs fairly smoothly it's fun as hell to play and worth a look for people who need to really " feel" a game before they invest in it.
Oh wow - i saw a developer video about this game at the end of last year and was extremly hyped because it already looked awesome and the combat system as one of the things i really looked forward to test. until now i lost totaly track of this game and never thought it would be released in a week.
definately will tune in and play with you all as this game is going to kick ass!

Anyone else been having trouble with the demo? Stuff just gets stuck on the screen: Subtitles don't vanish and just stack up, after all the cut scenes it stays on a black screen with just the UI, opening the menu then closing leaves the info there, even opening the steam thing (Shift-tab) and closing it leaves an imprint in game.
Tried a few different resolutions, in and out of windowed mode but nothing seems to work.

i played the demo and the menu interface suuuuuuucks. i haaate it whyyy whyy T.T and i dont like the design decision to not be able to aim with my bow but beside that its ok the skill system is awesome"i like numbers^^" and the Sword/dagger/staff combat its pretty neat
and also the difficulty was damn low @the highest possible so i hope that it gets harder and the encounter are creative and challenging.
@day9 GL HF and i hope you will not play on normal^^
I wonder if we could set up a chat room for all who want to participate. A TS, Vent, RC whatever room for anyone who wants to join. all the main guys would be in a private room and the rest can join the chat channel below. day9 or whoever could drop down and say whats up whenever they want and not have to worry about being fungled by crazy fans. we can all bond and have more funs? I had not heard of this game before and now I can't wait to see what it's all about. If nothing else, R.A. has earned my support many times over and I'd buy the game for that alone.

I hated the menu interface and the aiming with bows (and magic) as well, but haven´t played enough to see the skill system in practice.
The game is sooo easy, I made a warrior and just to play around, removed all the armor I had got. Still didn´t die to anything, but as I said I didn't play enough to tell (of the 1 hour of the demo, maybe I played 30 minutes). The quests seem dull, and uninteresting.
The combat interface doesn't look like that big of a deal too.
Overall, in my opinion Reckoning, is not as good as Skyrim, gamewise, but it is better codewise. It runs smooth in every scene, whereas Skyrim sometimes stutters a little.

Skyrim's argument feels so much better.
The graphics and open world in Reckoning, though very well done, doesn't feel as good too, but that is ny opinion only. I liek to climb mountains.

oh man, that penny arcade review is lame. Comparing Bayonetta and GoW combat systems with Skyrim? Nevermind the fact that the former are linear fighting games with small levels and choreographed fight sequences, whilst Skyrim is completely open world. Skyrim uses the limited power of the current gen consoles better than any game to date. When the next gen is out I am sure we will see hugely improved fight systems in open world games, and bethesda will be the first to do it.
I'm looking forward to seeing what this game is really like during the stream.
Wow even if you're getting paid for this thats so epic I can't even imagine. I thought it would be some of your friends but you picked out huge guys in a lot of communities.
I'm still in shock that day9 managed to open any locks at all in skyrim, will definitely be tuning in and buying the game. Even if this game was simply skyrim with good combat I'd buy it, but it looks like it's better in many more ways.

This is ridiculously awesome. It's going to be tough choosing which stream to watch (or settling for jumping between them). On that note, how are the prizes going to be given away with multiple streams going? Maybe some way with the website? Impressive prizes for a sudden event; huge props to 38 Studios.
Been intrigued by this game for several months. Didn't think Skyrim would be up my alley based on past Elder Scrolls experiences but I got a good vibe from Amalur. Pretty badass event you got planned. I'll have to remember to tune in to some of the streams.
Now to figure out who's going to be playing a Mage character...

Downloaded the demo before i knew about this but never had the time to try it

from what i've gathered thus far, there's no DRM the "online pass" you're talking about is for unlocking Mass Effect 3 armor and ADDITIONAL QUESTS they are given to you for free when you buy the game new... you do not have to buy an "online pass" in order to play the game =___=;;;
so if you buy the game secondhanded, chances are the code has been used already and you won't be getting the mass effect 3 stuff or access to bonus faction quest line, not a biggie. if it REALLY bugs you that you have no access to it, BUY IT, sheesh
PS: you don't even need to log in with the EA account to play the game, the logging in is mostly for the unlock stuff
The demo was extremely disappointing, but I'm actually looking forward to watching fun streams of it instead of playing myself as I don't have to worry about being spoiled.

But it's all fine. You show us a game in a great way, for absolutly free, and only those that enjoyed it will actually buy it. And if they enjoyed the show, they will probably enjoy the game too. You entertain us quite a lot, therefore you deserve money for it. Probably even way more than what you actually get.

Neither do I. If he does something, then that's his decision, I couldn't care less about what somebody was getting paid, and he said himself that he's not getting anything. If I wanna watch what he's doing, then DAMNIT, I'm gonna watch it!
Then again, I'm extremely biased. I tend to think that Day[9] + anything = Awesome, but that's just from personal experience

Just a quick clarification here...the "online pass" is completely free content to anyone who buys the game new. If you purchase a used copy of the game you can still play the game, you just won't have access to the House of Valor quest line without purchasing the DLC.

He could stream himself doing laundry and make money, that wasn't what people were wondering. He could also get more viewers by doing something else.
On topic, I finished the demo and it have potential. Maybe a bit linear but the demo doesn't really dwelve too deep into the content so that might change later on.
I haven't heard of this game before but after watching some of the videos on their site I'm blown away. It looks like the perfect mix of Elder Scrolls and Diablo.

I've always thought that a game with exploration, questing, freedom and other such typical RPG tropes found in WRPGs, mixed with a Devil May Cry or God of War battle system would be amazing. Hopefully this game will succeed in doing exactly that; as you say a lot of WRPGs typically have such tedious combat and I can't see why this hasn't been tried before.

So ie the Witcher is not a rpg to you? Mouseclicking for combos. One of the best RPGs I played, and #2 was pretty good too. The combat system in TES is terrible, you can just backpeddle infinitely and never have a problem, even with melee.

This is your opinion and i wholeheartedly disagree. I don't understand the need to categorize games either.
Demo seems kind of fun, but then again, i kinda think that all the pretty finishing moves (though i've only seen a few dagger assasinations so far) will end up making the game really annoying after the first 4 or 5 hours. And it sounds like it's something to be played for a lot more hours.
Can't really spot the special combat system in the demo so far either. Looks like u hit attack and stuff dies. How's that innovative?

I don't get it... I just don't get why it is SO important to know if Day[9] gets money or not for doing what he does? I don't understand why everybody feels SO concerned about how he gets for the adds when he streams or how much bacon he receives when he cast events? Stop with that, people. To be fair it's been pretty hyped already, several prominent gaming people already did playthroughs of the demo (e.g. Ciderhelm and JP), it's not exactly a unknown release. Probably one of the most anticipated releases of the first quarter, after the big franchise monsters (Mass Effect, Final Fantasy etc).

Can someone help me? First time poster here, and I'm not familiar with how or where to watch this event. Sounds like amazing (almost) free advertising for this game, not surprised they were willing to contribute those prizes. Will no doubt be tuning in to check this game out.
I never heard of this game, I played demo just because it unlocks stuff for upcoming Mass Effect 3, and I must say that this game is not bad. The only problem here is that I already actively play Battlefield 3, Stracraft 2, Skyrim and soon Mass Effect 3 and Diablo 3. So Im short on money and time, thats why I will not buy this game. In few months when I got some time and price would drop Im definitely gonna buy it (Space Marine is also on that list)

REAL QUESTION : Is this the future of game advertising ? I don't know how much you'll get from this guys but be honest about the advertising nature of your stream.

You're assuming that these people don't know each other? I don't know about you but several people on that list have mentioned each other a couple of times in their stream so they must have some sort of contact with one another.
I don't see what the problem here is either, and how you came to the assumption that Mr. Day9 didn't write that OP himself. Just you assuming all these things is just wrong, and seems like you're undermining the point of the event or something.

its a bunch of guys excited for the game who decided to make an event out of it, much like a lot of people do when a new game that they are excited for is coming out.
So yeah it is advertising, but its not disguised.
I mean this is what the most famous Youtube let's players have been doing for YEARS, its not something new, only difference is its done by livestreaming, rather than uploading on to youtube every other hour..

the camera was a mess in demo too, can't really tell from TBs stream if it's any better. The areas TB and Cinderhelm whom I saw play this earlier, seem really..restricted? I mean, there's no "oh I'll wander off to the horizon to see what's there" it's all this foresty area that is limited by walls, is the whole game like that? Sometimes there's a cave or dungeon added to the walls, sometimes not.

The original post was done by him... and honestly I'm surprised something like this wasn't done for the Skyrim release seeing that EVERYONE was streaming it. And how is this a horrible advertising model? Stream it, let the streamers give their views on the game and let potential customers make their decision based on what they see. Seems to be a much better model than looking at biased as all hell reviews on various websites/magazines and coming to a decision based on those.

I hope 38 studios is paying these guys a million bucks each to advertise this game. I would take any level of subversive advertising happily. Yay! Advertising through e-sports and e-sport personalities. More please!! I'll definitely be tuning in for a couple hours before bed. From what I demoed it seems like a fun game. I will definitely pick it up eventually and support these guys, and have lots of fun with my wife at the same time!
Also, come on, know your audience, if you want to advertise to video gamers for a video game, choose other gamers to do the advertising. Easy!
yeah i dont know how you could dislike this. its not like theyre gonna hype the game if they dont like it (well at least not all of them) and this way we at least get some good footage with people commenting on it that actually know what theyre talking about. if all advertisement was like this the world would be a better place.
Glad I watched TB's stream. Pretty much confirmed my suspicions after seeing the "big names" working on this: boring story and no challenge on hardest difficulty. The only game I eagerly anticipate is Mount & Blade 2. Warband has been a lot of fun (I came late to that party).
After watching TB´s stream I´m a bit disappointed as well, looks quite boring. And amazed how honest TB was during his cast. I don´t like some of his posts as they are very blunt, but have to respect his honesty.
The more I see of Felicia Day and her involvement in video game culture, the more I'm pushed to the inevitable conclusion that she is -- let me put this politely -- an escort. But she's beautiful, clean, pleasant, and possessed of an effervescent personality. Only think if the world was full of such professionals. Around gaming websites I've seen quite a few negative posts about her, and she doesn't deserve a single one of them.

From the little I have seen of this game it kinda seems like a Fable (the original, I hated Fable 2) 2.0 or something. Is that just me? Because I LOVED Fable 1 despite it only taking me like 12 hours to beat the game and get every single weapon.

I loved fable 1 too. Played it through 2 or 3 times trying everything. I think the artstyle is similar and it has fast paced combat but aside from that dunno.

Sorry day9 but you're playing really too slow, i'm all for taking your time and everthing, but you barely made it though the demo ( 30 minutes) in 2 hours... Time to go to bed for us poor europeans.
This event is really cool, the game looks good and faster paced than Skyrim for example, definite plus in my eyes. Not to mention the Combat seems to excel as opposed to Skyrim, which hit on all fronts except the dull combat. I'd sure as hell buy/play it!
Curt Shilling was one of the best pitchers in baseball, and won the Red Sox their first world series in forever. Really cool that he did an interview with day9.
I bought the game on steam just now, it looked like it was really good but I wasn't ready to play it yet. However with the crazy amount of support they're showing the esports community and how the supports mutually and just for the love of gaming in general I picked it up today.
If you're on the fence, or thinking about pirating it go buy it off steam/day9's amazon link and show people just how powerful the community can be.

all the interviews! the people joining in the skype calls! talking and playing at the same time! And the game itself is just awesome, and the people making it is beyond awesome and the understanding they have for people playing.
This type of event should happen more often, nothing better than seeing the community come together and try something new together...when you add in the game company interviews and giveaways it makes for a great launch event! I hope to see more in the future.
I also want to say that twitchTV has been very smooth threw the entire event and i love the idea of a "team" page so that I can easily hop between the different stream host all doing the same event.

Regardless of how much of his wealth it amounts to, that is a fuckton of money. Anybody else would spend it on vacation homes, boats, politics or stick it in a bank vault somewhere. The fact he is willing to invest a sizable portion of his assets into a field he is passionate about with no guarantee of a return on his investment is really cool.
While I think the game could be a bit more polished, we really need more people who are willing to sink the money into a project so that it's done right without cutting corners. Trust me, the consumers will speak with their wallets as soon as that actually happens.
