Hello TL and hello Skyrim fans!
Since our main thread on Skyrim moves very fast since the release and quite some people stated in there that a solid guide on what mods are out, usefull and awesome would be something they'd like to see, I'm going to make one and keep it updated for the time being.
If you have the feeling that you know a mod that I don't know about and have not integrated yet, feel free to post it in this thread with a source and a short description.
1st rule of modding your game: ALWAYS BACK UP FILES / SAVEGAMES BEFORE YOU MODIFY STUFF 2nd rule of modding your game: Unless it's small stuff like textures, do it one by one to avoid conflicts. If two mods try to modify the same resource your game might crash on startup and you have to find out wtf is going wrong on your own.
(click us) 1. Modding 2. The Purpose of this Guide 3. Known Bugs and Fixes 4. General Graphic Mods 5. Gameplay Modifications 6. UI Modifications 7. Texture Modifications 8. Other Mods 9. Other Modding Guides
1. Modding Modding and the games itself being modding-friendly has been proven to be an intregral ingredient of what makes The Elder Scrolls Series so popular and playable over huge amounts of time. Modding Bethesda games is rather easy to accomplish since the release of Morrowind (2002) and can range from tweaking small textures, to changes in the UI, integrating new buildings or NPCs and all the way to completely change the game to a completely new experience.
To show you guys some examples in terms of what has been possible in previous TES games, entirely done by the community:
TES: Morrowind 2011 Graphical Project
Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul 1.3
2. The Purpose of this Guide The TES modding community has a tendency to... let's say "explode" very quickly. As of now, the major modding databases for Skyrim already have 200+ files uploaded. Since the construction kit is not available yet most of these mods are textures and workarounds, but that doesn't mean that there isn't awesome stuff to integrate in your game yet. I won't add small texture mods like armor/face/etc. stuff. If you want a whiter snow fox, cleaner faces or a more baller looking dragon armor, please look for it yourself. That's what the big mod DBs are there for.
Since it is very, very easy to get lost quickly when it comes to all those different mods and tweaks I will try to guide you through the swamps and make your Skyrim experiences as pleasent as possible. Please fasten your seatbelts as I'm trying to give recommendations on what's already out there and how it works.
Note that I (obviously) don't take any responsibility for whatever happens to your game or computer if you use any of what I'm suggesting. Also note that I'm not providing official support for any of those mods. Please always check the original sources for updates and discussions as I might not be able to keep up with this soon enough.
MAKE SURE TO BACKUP FILES BEFORE YOU OVERWRITE THEM, JUST IN CASE.
I'm trying to avoid any and all spoilers, however it might happen that you get to know the name of certain quests or see some parts of the game you haven't seen yet. Shouldn't be anything major though.
3. Known Bugs and Fixes
Questname: Esbern Quest (anyone got the real name of the quest?) Problem: At one point the player will be asked to rescue a person named Esbern from the Ratways. However, his voice is bugged and you won't be able to hear him. Fix: This fixes it nicely.
Questname: Waking Nightmare Problem: When you follow Erandur up the mountain into the night caller temple he goes inside and when you follow him he isn't there. Fix: Afaik there is no "official" fix out there yet, however what worked for me was talking to him after his little speech at the temple and when he has his weapon drawn. Then I waited for a few seconds and entered and suddenly he was there. Yay!
4. General Graphic Mods
Modname: FXAA Post Process Injector Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=131 Author: some_dude What it does: This allows you to access the FXAA settings for the game. FXAA is usually known to be a quick way to access a lot of features like bloom, sharpen, technicolor, sepia, tonemap, vignette, and more. Each of those features can be edited via a .txt file and applied instantly just by saving the .txt and pressing the PAUSE key on the keyboard, very conveniant. Comment: While this is the original version of the injector, personally I'm using a slightly different version with different settings. While the file that manages all the post processing is easy to edit and access, some of it's features are quite tricky to get right. The mod I'm using personally is right below.
Modname: rendermax fine-tuning FX Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=174 Author: rendermax What it does: Same as above, making the FXAA values accessible and sets a solid preset. Comment: I really loved his settings a lot more than the original ones. More realistic, more crisp and it gets rid of the games inherent green stitch. Yes, it has one. Trust me. Personally I set float Sharpen to 0.10 to remove the "grainy" look and I set VignetteRadius/Amount to 0.90 and -0.10 to reduce the darkened corners. Heres how the difference looks for me (open in new window to compare properly)
(don't ask me why the second image is resized, but you get the idea, I hope. + Show Spoiler +Before: ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Xy00S.jpg) After: ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/0STB4.jpg)
Modname: Fix Shadows Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=148 Author: Ray What it does: Not a true "mod", but rather a .ini tweak to improve all the "blocky" shadows you can currently see, even on ultra settings. This should also incrase FPS drasticly if you run similar 4xxx numers. Just try it out. Comment: Awesome fix. Make sure to half all the 4096 numbers if you get FPS issues from this one.
Modname: Large Address Aware Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=202 Author: FordGT90Concept What it does: This allows Skyrim to use up more than 2GB of memory, this will increase stability of Skyrim and performance by increasing the amount that can be loaded into memory at any one time. Comment: Helped to fight those persisting 5s loading lags for me.
5. Gameplay Modifications
Modname: Fuzzys Realism Mod Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=235 Author: Fuzzysecurity What it does: FRM is a realism mod designed to make the game more immerse, challenging, and more realistic. Comment: This is the one for the hardcore Morrowind fans. Gives you the ability to remove stuff like Quest Tracking, Compass and HUD. Updates planned for when the mod kit is released (e.g. no fast travel)
Modname: Map in full 3D Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=145 Author: Mikanoshi What it does: This mod changes camera controls in ingame map view so it becomes possible to zoom in almost to the ground. Comment: Awesome feature, especially to find routes to objectives without ending up on the wrong side of the mountain. =D
Modname: Lockpick Pro Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=219 Author: Kenney What it does: This mod adds a bar at the top of the screen while picking a lock which shows you the 'sweet spot' of the lock. It also shows the health of the current lockpick. Comment: I'm not using this since I consider it cheap and I have no trouble with locks, but for those who are simply pissed about them this should help.
6. UI Modifications
Modname: Display time on loading screen Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=98 Author: Kenney What it does: Your boss is already complaining that you show up late? Your kids are crying 'cause you forget to pick them up from school? No more! Comment: To everyone who gets immersed too much, this is simple and should help out.
7. Texture Modifications
Modname: Enhanced Blood Textures Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=60 Author: dDefinder What it does: Exactly what the name says. Looks way cooler imo. Comment: BLOOD!!
Modname: Glowing Ore Veins 300 Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=193 Author: Baratan What it does: Are you missing like half the ore because you never recognize it's there? Comment: I didn't think it's usefull. Installed it and realized how many ore veins there really are. FML.
Modname: Enhanced Night Skyrim Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=85 Author: CptJoker What it does: More stars, brigthers stars - just like it should lo Comment: If you have ever been out in the wild far from cities and miss the thousands of stars you see there in Skyrim.. here you go.
Modname: better interior__ retex-beta Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=238 Author: quazaque What it does: "Too many times we have to interact with wooden shelves/tables/chairs etc. - I realized to make retex for those things cause vanilla ones are disguisting." Comment: Simple yet awesome fix for the small interior stuff.
Modname: Beautiful Skyrim Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=120 Author: Masterdaz What it does: "Photo-realistic retex Collection to make Skyrim a more beautiful place. Working through the textures one folder at a time." Comment: Awesome project, so far he's been updating it frequently.
Modname: Vurts Skyrim Flora Overhaul Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=141 Author: vurt What it does: Right now, treeeees! They look way cooler this way imo, you can select from a few different versions, too. Comment: I use "Subtle Green" and recommend bark 1 or 2, but check them for yourself. Installation is a bit effy atm, I just installed the first version, overwrote stuff and overwrote/deleted for the bark textures.
8. Other
Modname: Perk Planner Source: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=159 Author: Shiloh What it does: A simple spreadsheet to plan out your levels/perks and all that stuff. For all the mathcraft nerds. Comment:
9. Other Modding Guides
Here I'll list other solid Modding Guides I'm coming across. A lot of the stuff will be similar to what I showed you here, but maybe you find some other worthy mod for your game.

This is really ambitious considering how many mods come out, thanks for it though, I haven't really messed around with this much in Skyrim, but I think you should put in big bold letters above your post for people to back up their game files when about to mod and things are working in case something goes wrong with a mod, these things can conflict, you can lose some files etc.. and what sucks is you might need to go back and reinstall mods you had installed in order to get your save game to not be a mess of yellow exclamation marks.. etc.

Holy shit, this is truly awesome. I've seen some of the mods out there and they have been mainly graphical, which doesn't really interest me as I'm barely running Skyrim as is. Some of the other ones like Ore veins or Lockpick Pro sound really neat though!

If you are barely playing it, keep an eye out for mods that greatly increase FPS and performance, there are some that cause some quality reduction, but if it means you can play the game it's worth it usually. There were tons of these for Oblivion, haven't looked around at the Skyrim ones at all cause my machine runs it fine.

Surprised how many mods are out now, the creation kit isn't even done.. how do you even mod the game without the CS?
|
wow, thanks for picking out the good mods for us.

The "mod" (.ini tweak actually) for improved shadows actually improved my performance while looking better at the same time.
Alot of "i can barely run it" is caused by bad .ini settings since the options menu doesn't allow you to edit some of the stuff that's important like e.g. shadows.

Some people already bitched at him for the updated wood and fire textures, I actually like the axe you linked. Wood chunks look awefull in the current dl, I expect them to be changed soonish.

I have a question about the shadows fix I miss some of those values in my .ini file:
iShadowMapResolution=4096 <--------------------------------------------(4096)-(2048)-(1024)-(512)-(256)-(128) fShadowBiasScale=0.3000 iShadowMaskQuarter=4 ------------------------------- bDrawShadows=1
Should I just add them?

could you perhaps add whether or not a mod will change fps?
also, why cant i set to any lower resolution than 1200x700 ? im playing on VERY SHIT laptop and think resolution probably affects fps more than any other thing...

._. I'm just clicking these links waiting for the site to come back up, because I want like 90% of these.

Hmm... the fps thingy is tricky. Technicly all graphic improvements should lower your fps (e.g. the FXAA thingy costs me 5-20 depending on what's going on right now), however the Shadow Fix improved fps AND graphics for me. There are also people claiming that the FXAA improved their FPS a lot, it probably depends on the settings you use and which filters you run.
Texture mods should not affect your fps at all, they should only slightly increase loading time and RAM usage at most. Since Skyrim is very RAM friendly and a few 100kb of textures don't change that much during loading... for me I don't notice any performance hit for any of the texture mods out there atm. Think of them like giving an SCV a new color instead of turning the SCBW SCV into the SC2 one. =D
For your resolution issue: do you have "Show all resolutions" ticked in the Launcher? =P
If yes, try this one: http://www.shacknews.com/file/29505/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-simple-borderless-window-06 - that's the only thing I found coming close. If it works, please report back and I'll add it to the list in the OP.

Yeah, just add it. That goes for all .ini mods. Personally I added "[My random shit]" at the bottom and threw stuff below there.
HOWEVER IF A MOD SAYS THAT IT SHOULD BE IN A CERTAIN CATEGORY, ADD IT THERE JUST IN CASE.
For me the shadow the part above [Grass] looks like this: + Show Spoiler +bShadowMaskZPrepass=0 bMainZPrepass=0 iMaxSkinDecalsPerFrame=3 iMaxDecalsPerFrame=10 bFloatPointRenderTarget=0 iShadowMapResolution=1024 fShadowBiasScale=0.3000 iShadowMaskQuarter=4 iShadowFilter=3 bTransparencyMultisampling=1 bDrawShadows=1

can you Mod the game if you bought it through steam?
|
On November 16 2011 07:35 hiro protagonist wrote: can you Mod the game if you bought it through steam?
Yes, you can. Some mods hint at how it works via steam, some don't - but it should work with all of them.
Basicly you need to find the /data folder for Skyrim, I don't have it via Steam myself but I'd assume it's somewhere in your Steamapps stuff.
However, I have no clue how the whole autoupdate from steam interacts with mods and if it wtfpwns them, maybe someone else can answer that.

it's probably best to turn autoupdate off for Skyrim when you mod it.

Needs more UI modifications to make it actually worth playing on the PC. I would imagine this would be the first problem PC users have with the game, over graphical changes and stuff.

Actually as a pc player I have no problems with the UI at all, it's a big improvement over oblivion that's for sure. I don't really get what gripe people have with it. It just takes some getting used to, and I consider myself a pretty hardcore pc gamer as a matter of fact.

It can be a bit bothersome, but certainly not a reason to not play the game

Its usable sure, but after playing for ~30 hours its definitely frustrating to use. The more you have to use a UI the more obnoxious anything suboptimal becomes.
You don't understand what gripe people have?
There is no sorting capacity in the inventory at all, equipped items arent moved at all in the lists, there is no graphical representation of open/used inventory slots, the skill trees are pretty but extremely clumsy and slow to navigate, the inventory is in several catagorie you have to scroll through when they could all be displayed at the same time if they filled all the empty space, there are no icons for item types.....etc
Everything just takes more work than it could, this is the mark of a bad UI and the little bits of wasted time really add up when you play for as long as you play Skyrim for.
|
So...how do we install any mod? I'm pretty new to this.
|
I thought this was going to be a guide on how to mod, not just a list of mods already made Perhaps change the thread title? This isn't really much of a guide.
Nice list, none-the-less.

Modding is really simple and doesn't require much of a guide at all, if you run into any problems though just PM me and I can help you out.

Now that I think about it, that would all be really nice to have. I suppose I didn't really miss it though, although I do fidle around myself. Anyways let's just hope people release some awesome UI mods soon. I liked the look of the oblivion interface better.

Any good links for getting started with modding yourself?
like, for simple stuff for texture replacements and stuff? like how to open the archives in /data and how to put it back in there so on.
generally, where to start! :D
thanks a lot for everything so far!

Generally texture mods usually involve you downloading the mod and then placing it into ProgramFiles or w/e...\Skyrim\Data\textures. Or just into \Data. It's just simple copy paste into the right folder. Usually the instructions given are pretty clear.

Is there a mod out that fixes some of the hotkey issues? for example, i cant equip dual wield (of different weapons) without having to go into the favorite or item menu.

I get that part, but how do you extract the texture itself? I mean, what if i want to get a hold of the .dds file for a dragon for example, what editor can open the .bsa archives and how to create your own patch archives ect.
The installing mods part is pretty clear, but there is no info in this thread on how to do it yourself yet.

That's because the official tool to create mod (the Creation Kit) isn't out yet. Bethesda has yet to release it. Those modders probably used some external tool which I don't know about.
|
Two ways to install mods.
1) When the Mod Manager comes out, you drag the .esm and .bsa files to your data folder, along with anything else and you simply check them off in the mod manager and set the load order if necessary.
2) Drag the .esm files and shit into your data folder, and activate them via the Data option from your launcher.
This may seem simpler, but when you get multiple mods that require load orders and eventually start using script extenders and shit, you will need the mod manager.

I find it pretty weird that a game which has been out 1 week already has a mod community. Is the original not good/interesting enough? I can understand mods for a game like this much further on, when everything has been done over and over (like with diablo 2), then you'd like stuff to get harder and require more teamwork. Right now, it feels like telling the developers: ok job you did there making that world and all, but we can all do a better job...in a few days.

For New Vegas there were mods on day 1 as well.
It's really not meaning anything. TES/Fallout games are always modded almost instantly by a HUGE community of different groups of people. Chill out.
|
I don't have this previous posters issue, but I do use this mod, as full screen was buggy on alt-tabbing...it worked with no issues for me, just is kinda a pain to set up, as updates to the game will break it.
I've also installed the large memory address fix, 3d "street view" full map, enhanced blood textures, and enhanced night Skyrim. I didn't notice a performance hit with these.
I'll try out the larger mods later when they're more fleshed out...but will try the shadows one tonight, those blocky shadows are terrible. >.>

awesome thread! already using some of these mods, but loving it all consolidated in one place. keep up the good work.

People tend to do things themselves when they're not satisfied. Developers have deadlines and ultimately cant make things perfect as we want them to be. There will always be new mods right from the start that fix bugs, improve ugly textures, add new features, make females nude, etc., which is why the Bethesda modding community is so awesome.
And it's absurd comparing TES to an ARPG like Diablo.

ppl should stop complaining about the smallest things and play the damn game instead of spending half their time tinkering with code. I don't get the realism mod either, you don't have to fast travel if you don't want to and lots of people carry compasses x.x
on a completely hypocritical note I wish loading screens had a "press any button to continue" thing, because it loads too fast for me to read the text and gawk at the cool looking models. and i guess that shadow improvement thing looks cool and ill check it out. Still, most of the mods (That aren't bug fixes or obvious visual improvements) seem to be rather nit picky and stupid.
|
Why are there two SkyrimPrefs.ini files? One in My Documents -> Skyrim and one in Steam Directory -> Skyrim. Does it matter which file I modify? Most of the tweaks say to do it in My Documents. I've checked that modifying one does not modify the other, so they're not pointing to the same file.
|
Really nice thread, the "Beautiful Skyrim" texture pack looks a lot better than the real one IMO, it's making the game a lot more playable for me.
BTW, I don't know what's the reason, but I simply couldn't load the game when I had "rendermax" installed, and my map wasn't showing any texture when I installed "3D map".
So I just uninstalled these 2, and it works perfectly.
Thanks for a better gaming experience, and thx to everyone on skyrimnexus

Hmm.. for me all hotkey issues are fine since 1.1, did you try hovering over them after opening favorites with Q and pressing 1-8?

I can understand mods for a game like this much further on, when everything has been done over and over (like with diablo 2), then you'd like stuff to get harder and require more teamwork. Right now, it feels like telling the developers: ok job you did there making that world and all, but we can all do a better job...in a few days.
The answer to this is pretty simple: It's a Bethesda Game.
Both Morrowind and Oblivion (not sure about Fallout 3, but I'd assume something similar) had HUGE modding communities. It usually starts with "hey, this texture looks kinda meh... gimme half an hour" and ends with "uh, so I thought I could make this or that better so I created a mod with 1GB content (Oscuros Oblivion Mod is kinda like that". Since the official construction kit isn't out yet the current "mods" are mostly texture reworks and .ini / d3d9.dll tweaks. Once the tools are out you can expect the fancy stuff to drop out.
From what I remember about Oblivion in the first 3-4 weeks also most "teams" start assembling. Aka "hey, we want to completely overhaul the Flora. We need textures for trees & plants, maybe some new shadowmaps..... hey, can we get a guy to help us who's good with snow? Oh, fuck, let's ask this guy who tries to mod how alchemy works into the boat." =D

Most of the tweaks say to do it in My Documents. I've checked that modifying one does not modify the other, so they're not pointing to the same file.
Without Steam there are two, too and the one you have to mod is in Skyrim\Skyrim, not the one in Skyrim\
@Whoever asked which tools are being used: It seems a lot of the basic stuff is similar to Oblivion and some of the old tools still work. However, no one can get to the real fun stuff like AI behavior, scripting etc.

Need a short opinion on this one since I seriously can't decide myself: Which snowflakes do you guys like more?

I don't get the realism mod either, you don't have to fast travel if you don't want to and lots of people carry compasses x.x on a completely hypocritical note I wish loading screens had a "press any button to continue" thing, because it loads too fast for me to read the text and gawk at the cool looking models. and i guess that shadow improvement thing looks cool and ill check it out. Still, most of the mods (That aren't bug fixes or obvious visual improvements) seem to be rather nit picky and stupid.
The great great great things about this game, is that it's a singleplayer experience thats completely customized. So sure you might enjoy game as is, but there are tools out there for people to change the game in drastic ways or small ways. I don't get the realism mod either, I usually walk everywhere myself, but i'm sure later on as walking gets old I'll start using the fast travel options.
Oblivion was pretty dull for me, I only spent about 40 hours with the vanilla experience until I found mods, I probably have 400+ hours on OOO and MMM, and Francescos, and tons of quest mods, etc that I've messed around with.

^^evercharmer's is way better.
I don't even think the other one is a noticeable improvement. If you put those images next to each other and asked which one was the 'improved' version I wouldn't be able to tell you. Same with beautiful skyrim, many of those textures look the same or much worse even :/ In fact, many of the beautification projects out now are not improvements in my opinion. It's to be expected since the game just came out. I can't wait for when the real mods start rolling out.
Better interior textures is excellent though. Looks much better than the vanilla, which is awful.

Has anyone found a mod that allows me to kill all NPC's, even the quest giving NPC's? Just frustrates me when someone looks at me wrong and I can't bash his face in and then murder his associate to get rid of witnesses...Spent a long time on google and only found people talking about murdering children :-/.

Alright, that is totally not disturbing whatsoever. Maybe there is a kindred soul out there that has made just the mod for you! I thought there was a console command to kill something, not sure if it works on questgivers, probably not.

Ugh, when is the construction set coming out. That's what I really want right now.
|
For those people with older pc's this works wonders.
|
Well this sure died fast >_<. Are there any more new mods worth getting or have they decided to wait for the construction set coming next year?
|
Any mods I should be aware about besides the ones post on the first post. I'm talking things might make the game harder or more enhanced like tougher or more realistic flying dragons, etc. I'm not looking for mods that add to the game, but make the game better with what it has.

Is there a mod that fixes the small distorted line in the game? Like in the map, when you move it there is a small distorted line that passes horizontally sometimes. Happens in-game too.
