Pff. Dribbling is fun and all, but real football is made in passing. I'll take Xavi, Silva or Mata over Neymar, Messi or CR any day. Maybe it's the Englishman in me...but then again the three players I mentioned preferring are all Spanish haha.

Maybe you haven't seen Messi enough because his passing is easily as good as those players you mentioned. His assists sometimes are the best I have ever seen. He has amazing vision/passing.

messi blows silva and mata out of the water in every aspect of the game and anybody who knows anything about football woulda rather have ronaldo over them 2 also

since we are talking about young players, check this video of Ganso. He's 22 years old, Santos' playmaker. People expected him to be the next Brazilian star along with Neymar until he got injured in 2010:

The video is one year old. Unfortunately, Ganso had an awful 2011. Around September 2011 he had a really serious injury on his left knee and had to stop for 6 months. He returned in February 2011 and in March he had another injury that put him off for another 3 months. He returned just in time for the Copa Libertadores final. Ever since he's not been the same player. He's also struggling to make a new contract with Santos since 2010. Back then, Neymar made a new contract to earn a shitload more (both earned around R$ 1,200,000 per year - $1 = R$ 1,85), and Ganso was negotiating with the club to get a better salary too. During the negotiations Ganso got injured and they postponed the negotiations. Since then, Neymar has become a better player and is now getting paid R$ 36,000,000 per year, while Ganso still makes the very same R$ 100,000.

He still makes brilliant plays, but he seems uninterested in most matches and sometimes he looks like a 40 year old player just walking around. I wonder if will make a good season in 2012. Hopefully he will have a good season in 2012, I used to love watching him play.

I didn't make this post to compare him with any of the young players above btw. I just wanted to show some of him to those who never heard of him.

Yeah Ganso is quality.

Also one of my favorite Brazilian players atm is Coutinho. He may not be as hyped by the media but along with Neymar I think he'll be the next big thing in football in a couple more years.

I'm just talking about what I prefer to see. Touch perfect passes are so gorgeous to watch, so clean and dominant. A good pass gets through as many guys as a sick dribble but it is faster and more efficient. But I will agree with the other guy who said Messi can pass as well as the ppl mentioned, as long as we are talking Silva and Mata, but Messi doesn't focus his game on passing as much as them. Xavi is even better than Messi in passing imo, I don't think anyone in the modern game is as good as him at controlling and setting up attacks from midfield.

For me personally (obviously):

Best ever: Messi [I know its very hard to compare players out of different decades and stuff but if I had to make a decision it would be messi. Reason being: Every real soccer fan should basically just know]

Zidane [Definitely up there; right now i realize I cant really put those in rankings so I wont]

Messi,Zidane and Henry are the three players I admire(d) the most.

C.Ronaldo is definitely a special player and has certain abilities + Show Spoiler +
that put him above many players if not every play but I will never see him as the greatest.

I'm french and for me messi is the best footballer of all times, he just misses a world title with selection to overshine maradona.

Also i understand now i grew up how good was zidane, i looked some videos and he just dance with the ball, this is fantastic, he was such an elegant genius, and his vision of the game was so perfect, he knew where to pass before control the ball, his head was always high, and he defended amazingly too. Just the perfect player, he just missed pace and acceleration but when you control and do the right pass faster and better than anybody else this is nothing.

Also i discovered susic, this guy was so elegant and technical, i almost cried a tear :'(

And for me henry wasn't this kind of genius, he ran fast, he scored many, he dribbled often, but he wasn't a genius, just a verry good footballer.

Since we are in this discussion I will just say that my fav player and one of the worlds greatest ever is Batistuta.
Quite possibly the best center of all times.
My dick has shrunk to the point where it looks like I have 3 balls.

I and everyone who used to watch Premier League and Champions league and thinks he has a certain knowledge about soccer whould be offended by this statement or at least not accept it!

I know I admire Henry more than most people (on this board anyway) but still, Henry definitely was a genius and not just a very good footballer.

Gotta be kidding me..

Speed:

skill: / goals (scoring goals and especially scoring amazing goals is a skill..)

I know his main skill is scoring goals but he is a genius at it and his passing and overall skill is just crazy as well.

skill

watch this and tell me you still think hes just a very good footballer

at certain points Henry schooled top competition in the premiere league..

I wouldnt go as far as to compare him with messi or zidane (because they are the greatest for me ever) but Henry .. no genius?

No way

Sorry if I annoyed people with this post

Im probably a bigger Henry fan than that one guys Name i forgot but everyone knows is a fan of Totti and Roma

One of the great things about that last goal is that Frank de Boer (the one who gave the assist) is headcoach of Ajax right now and Bergkamp is his assistant.

Just before this little Messi/dribblers/neymar/goat debate fizzles out I just want to throw out that if you dont think Messi is the best player in the world, best dribbler in the world and on his route to being the best of all time then you've not been following football for the past 5 years. Messi is sublime- not only is he ridiculously talented he couples this with desire and positive sporting attitude and carries himself with unbelievable composure on the big stage. Forget champions and legends, he is a god. He is setting a new standard for gods. On a weekly basis.

Football ultimately is about getting the ball in the most optimal position for your team to score a goal. Neymar does this by carrying the ball himself through 3-4 defenders. Cronaldo powers his way through using his strength, speed and skills. Messi does this in his sleep.

He's good but way overhyped in my opinion. No way he's going to reach the level of Messi. You forget that Messi was already kicking ass in Spain when he was 17-18?

So far Neymar hasn't impressed me as Messi did back when he was 19.

Are we talking dribbling here... if so, it's situational, because Naymar is really good, has more tricks than Messi and awesome acceleration.

I would say both Naymar and Ronaldo are better at out-dribbling a whole team than Messi.

Now, is Messi better at dribbling past one or two players outside the box to score a goal? Yes.
Is he better at one-two's? Yes.

Basically, my argument is, dribbling wise, Naymar is better in MORE situations than Messi NOT ALL. As a complete player Messi is way better than Naymar, but not at dribbling.

IMO Messi has out-dribbled a whole team many more times than CR. And finished it with a goal I mean. For reference look at the last ~50 goals of both and see which are better

If you can show me a clip where Messi wins the ball in his own half, then out-dribbles the opposition team and scores, I will concede and shut up. Remember, there can be no passes. It would be ok, but it would be fair-er, if this was done during a non-counter attacking situation, i.e. there is at least midfield/defense in front of him and he has to dribble/go around say 3 -4 players.

IDK guys, I support Real Madrid but everyone who says Messi is not the best in the world is just a bit silly/hasn't seen any Barça's game (not Barca).

You cant compare brazilian defenders with european defenders. Messi in the brazilian league would dribble the entire enemy team all the games.

There's talk of Barça being interested in v. Persie as a replacement for David Villa btw. Thoughts?

I'd like it at least. A chance for him to develop even further and finally win some prizes. I think he can be a decent addition to any team. Technical player that can definitely play well in the passing game that Barça employs and obviously a tremendous finisher.

Dunno, I don't think RVP fits that well in Barca. I see him as a younger version of Ibra and we all know how that turned out.

Against top defenders, I absolutely agree with you. But I don't really see any difference between brazilian defenders and defenders from Getafe, Levante, Rayo Vallecano, Espanyol, Racing, etc. Those teams suck as a whole. The top European teams are way (wayyyy) ahead of South American teams, but I don't think the rest are better than 'our' teams at all. It's alright if you think otherwise though, we will never know for a certainty since they will never face each other .
