I noticed TL had a Final Fantasy: Dissidia thread a few years ago, so I thought I'd start up a new thread to mention that the sequel was released today (in Australia at least).
For those who are unfamiliar, Dissidia is an extremely fast-paced, 3D Real-Time fighting game in the Final Fantasy universe. And when I say 3D, I mean more than just your traditional Tekken or Street Fighter where you can sidestep into the foreground or background. I mean crazy aerial battles in huge arenas with terrain elements (such as slipstreams you can use to glide around the level, or pillars you can throw your enemy into for bonus damage) reminiscent of the most epic Dragon Ball Z battles.
The game involves the main characters and villains from every Final Fantasy game from 1 through 13 being transported to a single universe, where they engage in an endless war between the two gods "Chaos" and "Cosmos". Now before I go ahead, let me just mention that ALL characters are playable - good and evil - including Sephiroth. For a full list of characters (in chronological sequence), see below.
A few of the newest additions since the previous Dissida include Tifa, Laguna, Yuna and Lightning from FF7, 8, 10 and 13. During gameplay trailers, we also see cameo "battle assist" appearances from characters such as Aerith.
As you would expect from a Final Fantasy title, it has very sophisticated RPG elements, with each character being able to levelled individually from level 1 to 100, picking up a range of unique abilities and equipment along the way.
Each level is presented in a sort of "chessboard" format, where you control a piece on a board and freely move around to choose which opponent you will battle. Some battles require you to win under a certain condition (ie. Defeat the enemy within 10 seconds, or Win without taking damage, etc), allowing you to unlock new features, items and summons throughout the game.
Furthermore, if the previous Dissidia was any indication, finishing the story mode is truly "just the beginning", as all of the real content becomes available upon completion, allowing you to enter the Duel Arena and grind out each character in a card game for additional treasures and unlockables.
Collecting the "Ultimate Weapon" for each character is generally an endeavour that requires a few solid months of grinding, as the components required to construct each weapon are very difficult to obtain, and are spread across all of the different game modes.
I've been playing the first Dissidia game nearly daily for almost 2 years now and I have to say it's one of the best investments of all time. There is SO much to do, the characters are SO stunning and it's just so awesome to finally have the opportunity to see your favourite characters go head to head in beautiful detail. And of course, the game can be played against other people online.
I recommend this not only to anyone who owns a PSP, but to anyone who is a fan of ANY of the Final Fantasy titles full stop. I personally bought a PSP just for Dissidia and I still don't regret it to this day!
See below for a great gameplay trailer, or fast forward to the 4:30 mark to see the most stunning CG animation we've seen from Square to date.
Hacked my psp and got the game. I LOVED IT. I just wish it was longer...
This game also put the original dissidia storyline back in, so im busy playing that right now instead of grinding. I'm doing all lv 1 run through, which is pretty annoying...
<3 I am totally getting it for my cousin's birthday... tomorrow? Oh yeah, Korean Standard time. we both played the original, and is psyched for this one. Shhhhh! Don't tell him!
Any insight on how the newer characters play? I've watched some gameplay videos of Tifa vs Sephiroth and she looks insanely fun. Only seen a few glimpses of Laguna, Yuna and Lightning though!
So is anyone playing this ? I'm 14 hours in and on the party battle story tale. So far I'm finding this freaking awesome!! I did sink like 200 hours into the original Dissidia and loving the improvements.
Anyone want to battle over PS3 Ad hoc party ?? Currently my mains are lightning and tifa ~lvl30. If only I didn't have pharmacy work, I would play this all day xDD
I've been semi-competitive in the first game, so its only natural that I start analyzing the game way too deeply. (The game is rather casual)
So for I have found Prishe and Tifa to be extremely fun to play. Currently trying out Gilgamesh, which seems to be very fun so far.
I've played the first one a lot, and really gotten used to DC (Dodge cancel) combos. However they are completely gone now, and you use assists instead.
Basically you can call for an assist from character you have set. Assists have one ground brave and HP attack. If you played with DC's in the first game you know how positioning and stuff were crucial for some combos to work. However with assists its rather simple, and almost impossible to miss if you have a good psynergy between your assist and your own attacks.
This allows characters with troubles hitting HP attacks normally (Which most often have very good brave game) never miss their hp attacks.
For example: As Prishe all of your basic HP attacks are incredibly slow, and the only way to hit with them is if the enemy screws it up. But she have incredibly good brave game. One of her attacks is a fast downward slam that breaks any guard, and its really hard to dodge. And it always wall rushes, and assists go through the wall rush invincibillity. So pair up it with an assist for an 100% hit with a HP attack.
Because of that I feel that strong Brave characters like Sepiroth or Squall will dominate any tournaments.
However, It might be too early to tell. As there are a lot of counter tactics like counter assist and EX-revenge now.
All in all, A really fun game. And if you have the possibility to play it, take your chance.
Okay, so I got home from work, fired this up, and played it for like 14 hours straight or something. I seriously just kept playing and playing until I passed out, hahaha. IT'S SO MUCH FUN! I was expecting basically Dissidia with some extra characters and assists. But WOW. The whole game is so damn different, in all the best ways! As haze said - the assist concept really changes everything because of the enormous number of character possibilities and potential synergies.

So far I'm just so happy with the story mode, the world map navigation and especially the KP chaining! It's so fun entering a gateway, zooming out and planning exactly which chain you need to use in order to maximise your KP. The new chase design is actually so much more intense than it was in Dissidia... giving you like half a second to decide whether your opponent is going to use a HP attack or a Brave attack. :D
I'm just so impressed. I wasn't expecting this much out of duodecim, honestly.
Hmmm gotta dust off my PSP to try this. There's official online in this you say? You need a PS3... same as the original nevermind -_- All psp games are like this now right

The most awesome thing about Dissidia is how they implemented the battle system. It truly feels anime-ish and just looks and feels really awesome. It's so cool to do an attack when your opponent does one, and watch them collide, or do a stronger attack that completely crushes through an opponent's weaker attack.
Also, Laguna is the best character in this game. You don't need any superpowers to kick ass. You just need an infinite array of ridiculous weapons.
Oh man, I just finished the first Laguna chapter and I see exactly what one of the earlier posters meant - he's just so awesome! Machine Gun, Shotgun, Giant Ragnarok Laser, Nuke from Orbit, Sticky Mines, Hand Grenades... so many awesome weapons at his disposal!
I seriously can't get enough of this game at the moment. I should be practicing for a $25k SC2 tourney this weekend but I just can't stop playing my PSP.
Yeah I was about 200 hours deep into the first Dissidia when I started playing this, I was SO HAPPY to see you could import all of your game data over from the first one! So awesome.
The dialogue for Laguna makes him a more lovable character than ever! I love how he yells, "BEST. WEAAAAAPON. EVEEEEEER" when using his Limit Break, hahaha. <3
Can't wait to play Tifa!
Still can't get over how awesome the chaining concept is, I've been waiting to get a good gateway so I can get a 6 chain for the Accomplishment! Grrr. I really appreciate how scarce the KP resource is, and how the introduction of limited items discourage you from hoarding KP until the best items become available. I really feel like everything (GIL, AP, KP, etc) is so much more "hard-earned" in duodecim. Ahhh, so much love for this game! <3
