Counter-strike 1.6 performance on "modern" system

So I've been playing CS 1.6 on my laptop, and I'm wondering a few things about the performance.

My laptop has a Turion X2 proc (I know, it has terrible thermals, and it even overheated once or twice last summer while I was playing SC. My system just went to 100C+ and decided to shut off before a fire broke out) and a nVidia 7150 mobility integrated graphics processor.

I'm already running CS1.6 on the lowest settings, but when servers have 20ish players and smoke grenades, my system just starts to drop to 30 fps or lower. Is the 7150 just not capable of running this ancient game without choking? Did my PC's performance permanently suffer from the bout of overheating that summer?

I even have a config file with a bunch of performance tweaks.. I have the smoke settings set to lowest.. I just don't know why even an integrated video proc wouldn't be able to handle this..

it's an integrated graphic card dude. it was not designed to run games, and 1.6 is not as 'ancient' as you would think it is.

There's absolutely no reason you can't run cs1.6 at high. Did your cpu overheat at 100C? That's pretty high and possibly high enough to cause some damage, although I really have no idea why you wouldn't get solid performance on 1.6.

yes, if you get a laptop with an integrated graphic card, your going to have trouble playing any games

I can remember running CS 1.3 on my AMD K6 266mhz, 32mb ram, 4mb Voodoo 1. It only ran at about 17 fps but it ran all the same.

Damn good times.

As for your performance, it should run a lot better than you are reporting...

Try these super pro tips:
1) Update video card drivers
2) Make sure the display mode in 1.6 is set to Open GL. If you are using Win7 try Direct 3D. Experiment with both and find which gives the most performance.
3) autoexec.cfg settings for best performance are below:

+ Show Spoiler +
gl_dither "1"
gl_cull "1"
// renders visible objects only
gl_keeptjunctions "0"
// shows cracks in textures
gl_max_size "128"
// sets the texture size*
gl_clear "0"
// texture quality
d_spriteskip "0"
// unknown, but seems to increase performance
r_dynamic "1"
// Toggles dynamic lighting
r_mirroralpha "0"
// Turns off reflective images
gl_palette_tex "0"
// Makes textures flat
r_norefresh "0"
// doesn't update hud and console at unnecessary times
gl_round_down "5"
// toggles texture degrading level (1-99 higher = worse quality)*
cl_weather "0"
// Turns off weather (de_aztec)
max_shells "0"
// Turns off ejecting bullets
gl_texturemode "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST"
// Sets the texture mode
gl_wateramp "0"
// No water waves
r_shadows "0"
// No shadow
r_waterwarp 0
// Toggles whether surfaces warp in water
fastsprites 1
// Smoke Detail (0-3, highest = worse quality) does not affect the initial big cloud, but the smoke that comes out of the grenade after its initial explosion
cl_highmodels 0
// Model Quality
cl_shadows 0
// No player shadow
gl_picmip 1
// Blends textures *
gl_playermip 2
// Blends player model textures *
joystick 0
// Turns off joystick to take up minimal cpu
max_shells 0
// No ejecting bullets
max_smokepuffs 0
// No Smoke puffs (illegal command, do not use in leagues)
brightness 30
gamma 3
r_mmx 1
// enable MMX CPU Calculations

Also the smoke effects in 1.6 are pretty notoriously bad, it's just an old game with new effects forced on it that haven't been optimised properly. If I'm playing fun maps and people spam smoke nades it brings my 5870 to a grinding halt at around 15 fps. Just part of the fun

You guys are giving onboard/integrated graphics too much credit, those cards are absolutely terrible.

No we aren't, they are more than capable of running 1.6 on high with absolutely no issues. When sc2 burnt up my card I was running 1.6 on high with an ati xpress 200, which is wayyyyyyyyyyy worse than what OP has.

If it can play Doom 3 at 36 fps, even on low - it can play Counter Strike 1.6.

He's not wrong, that card is overkill for cs1.6. You're just showing that you know not what you speak of.

I mean, I can run HoN at like 20 times the resolution, albeit with all the effects turned off. I imagine HoN is a bit more demanding than CS1.6

I think I'll switch between DX and OpenGL and see how those work out. I'll look to make sure my card's drivers are updated. I remember first running CS1.6 BEFORE the whole overheating fiasco, and having not-so-great performance. It almost feels like the autoexec configs don't do much.

Definitely, switching between DX and OpenGL is a great idea.

I used to play Counter-Strike: Source using an integrated graphics card, it's hard for me to see you not running CS 1.6.

Yet, again, CS 1.6 is not "omg ooolllld gaaaaame"; the engine was probably last updated in.. 2009-ish, I'd say? As someone else said earlier in this forum, it's an old engine using forced new functions and effects that aren't polished.

Smoke in CS is like smoke in CoD: pretty bad-looking, and it consumes a lot of resources. with 20 or more people, It's pretty hard to avoid, yeah.

What I used to do was to look away from the smoke, hahaha; it helped me avoid the lag back then.
play better, macro, control

now this i'm interested in. i have an ati x1400m which is decidedly better than your card (a score of 1000+ on 3dm6 vs a score of 300 on yours, ) and i struggle with hon on lowest everything (including resolution AND my own custom tweaks). what settings are you running hon at, exactly?

edit: and for the record my card can play cs:source quite well. that's more demanding than 1.6 i think? not sure..

Tweak it, 1.6 is one of those games that needs to be tweaked because thanks to it's age, you need to feed it the right pills otherwise it'll just take a shit all over your system uncontrollably.

I am speaking about the graphics and the net code too. Figure out what works for you, because again, thanks to it's grandfather status, there isn't always a singular fix that works for everyone.

And JeeJee, the x1400 (and the x1600) cards were noted for their power consumption and heat advantages, not their performance which made them nice for the casual gamer on a laptop, but not great for anything else. Don't bank on it getting better

They are complete trash but half life 1 engine is so old it is ridiculous.

I was playing half life 1 with a P166 and a S3 Virge it was laggy but still playable.
Then i got a CS and a K7-500 + the first Geforce and i could play fine.
Even if his card is the shittiest Nvidia it is still quite weird that it can run properly a 10+ years game.

the thing is judicator, at least according to benchmarks (which i usually don't put too much faith in, but this difference is quite large), my card scores over 3 times higher on 3dm06, 05, 03, 01 you name it. it's definitely a better card, performance-wise which is why i am literally stunned that he's having no problems with hon on higher resolutions

edit: the only explanation i see here is that hon depends much more on cpu than gpu power. this is plausible. what's your cpu, OP?

well that's kind of like me saying i have a core duo; there's a big difference between a u2400 core duo and a t2700 core duo. either way i looked up all the turion x2's and they're all either similar or slightly worse than my t2600...
this makes me confused. i wanna run hon at high settings too .... >.< maybe hon just likes amd/nvidia better than intel/ati

right, sorry for the derail OP.. that hon remark just got me wondering. i wonder what's up with mine. you're not doing anything sneaky like running linux and the hon linux client on yours are you?

I have a Turion x2 2.2g processer in my laptop.. It runs CSS on Full nevermind 1.6.. altho i have to run everything on low on sc2 and even then it chokes at least once a game. but i do have a HD4570 card.. which is a piece of shit but better than an integrated.

I'd have it checked, if it can't run the half life 1 engine at this stage then you have issues, even integrated cards should be able to run the HL2 engine no probs by now.
