While he was talking about all of the industrial-era policies, I kept thinking to myself "My games never go long enough for me to get those." You don't really get a chance to use most of the late game techs in the average game either. I wouldn't want them to overhaul the policy system for that reason. I like social policies as they are personally.

I like social policies as they are personally. But there's the other problem that most policy trees are simply not viable, and unlocking most of them so late doesn't help promote any diversity. Hopefully this will change a little bit. I'm curious how Piety is going to be reworked since it was previously the culture tree, but unless there's a nerf to Liberty and a buff to Commerce/Patronage, policies will still be one of the more boring parts of the game.

Will still buy it once it goes gold though since I love Civ, but will probably play it to death in the first few weeks and say goodbye .

I don't think adding religion is gonna change that many fundamental things about Civ were dumb down too much in Civ5 vanilla. The fundamentals of city management and strategy forming is still very much there, with an added fundamental of army positioning and composition. Sure, some key elements like complex diplomacy was removed 4->5, and things like social policy and wonders didnt work out as well as hoped, but we gained as much complexity as we lost, but in a more easily manageable and intuitive way. (I can't believe The Great Wall defense was a legit strategy, as cool as it was)
