In comparison to Torchlight 1 i liked the design of the levels way more. In TL 1 i often felt like there is no space at all. I also like the items better so far. The story once again was nothing to talk about, but it doesn't matter to me. For Diablo 3 i thought the story was ok, but it annoyed me quite a bit when playing it more than once. At the moment i could imagine that i'll play this longer than D3, but time will tell. ^^

*** It seems with outlander that the game forces you to go poison-based damage no matter what, or your dps just doesn't scale well enough. Only 2 out of 5 of my outlander builds made it to lvl 50+: a poison glaivelander and a dualie venemous hailer. My debuffer shotgunner, debuffer dualies, and dualies shadowshooter dps barely kept up with monster armor scaling, but they didn't have much burst so it would take forever to kill enemies that forced you to constantly move around, so the game only got harder when dealing with mage and berserker-types. I gotta say though, poison-based outlanders have insane dps. My lvl 85 dualie venemous hailer only has an avg eq lvl of 56, but I crunched the numbers and she does ~85k raw dps and ~60k dps to the dummy (2-shots champions and kills bosses in under 30 seconds). But I think any build that uses venemous hail or poison glaives will work, due to how powerful those 2 skills are (in conjunction with poison bonuses + cursed daggers) Once I finish up NG++ vet and hit lvl 100 with my dualie VH, I'm gonna give outlander one more go and really try to make a non-poison based build work. I'm thinking of going a shotgun fire-based build featuring burning leap, glaive sweep and burning glaives. I think dps-wise it'll make it, but it'll be really up close and personal, which should make things interesting and fun!

Although unique set items seem fairly rare, i've only found one piece of a unique set as of now. Perhaps because there are no low level unique sets? Maybe. Also, i haven't thrown away any uniques yet... Too bad you don't start in a city for making easy mule characters, although it doesn't take that long. I'll have to do that soon, or i have to throw some away / change four to one new. But i don't really want to do that, because i could imagine that i'll play some more characters later on, and having cool equip is nice. :D Edit: Also, today they rightfully fixed the shield bash damage. Damn, this nerfed me quite a bit, although it's still fine at my level. Will have to see if it stays like this, because it doesn't scale with that many things (i think only with focus, +phys dmg% (not sure) and critical chance and damage). If i had a complaint about it, it is that focus is necessary for the damage for Shield bash... You need high strength for good Shields and Weapons, so you basically need all attributes, which is what i do at the moment. It's a solid skill for a first char though, very easy to play a tanky Engineer (Veteran for me) although it's no mass destruction.

I haven't played anything but outlander, but it seems like the engineers I've played with who knew what they were doing would just demolish waves in 1-2 quick bashes. And uniques drop quite a bit, but I have yet to find a legendary drop. The only legendary I have is a pistol I traded for, which gives a nice +12% crit chance and spawns blinding clouds (which is so good), but the dps itself is comparable with other pistols in its level.

Okay good to know, thanks. I'm only so surprised because the game loading screen sometimes has hints and there is no legendaries listed there. Speaking of the enchantment hint, if i remember correctly.

Hypothetical build so far seems to be. Max Staff Mastery (-resists), Max Ember Spear, Max Fire Brand. Now that leaves a bunch leftover for utility and whatnot... I enjoy using Firebombs, useful for kiting. Probably Immolation Aura (-15% damage red shield) deserves to be maxed. Other then that, Pillar & Firestorm require some testing before I'm convinced they deserve skill points. Firestorm should be good...otherwise I have 1 point in Frozen Fate and will probably invest in Elemental Boon a touch.

Every embermage should put 1 point in it. It's blink, and god it's useful.

You should get a few points in elemental attunement, just to make sure that stuff doesn't stop burning once you set it on fire. And then 1 point in both of the other elemental damage passives is well worth it. Pillar does a lot of damage in those situations where you can use it, but i don't know if the bug where it sometimes set you on fire is fixed.. And i agree, 1 point in frost phase is the best single point you can spend in this game. I personally have been going with the wand mastery instead of the staff one because it sounded more fun, and i must say i don't feel like it is useless.

I could probably still play for a while more, because i don't really die at the moment. But i think it's better to start a new char in this case. I'm not entirely sure what they want Shield Bash to be good at then. Stunning? Most challenging mobs so far couldn't get stunned and plenty other Engineer skills do that.

overall, if you're not concerned about the super end game and want a more chill game to just slay enemies, i'd go with TL2. i'd suggest not playing outlander though lol. most polished class, but also seems to be the most boring. stack mana regen -> spam glaives edit: for reference, TL2 lasted me ~80 hours before i got all best in slot gears and got bored (granted i only played outlander) whereas i have 500+ hours on D3 (300 from monk, my main class, if you want a more fair comparison to the 80)
