Name: 강동현 (Kang Dong Hyun) ID: Symbol Nickname: Nephalem Zerg Born: January 2, 1992 (Age 20) Country: South Korea Team: Jin Air Race:
Kang "Symbol" Dong Hyun is a professional Korean StarCraft 2 Zerg player who plays for Team SCV Life. Symbol used to be a A/B-team player for Brood War pro-team Hwaseung Oz; he used the ID NeeL during this period.
Symbol started his career in the ESV TV Korean Weekly with great results. He made it to the final of Season 1, Week 10 where he lost to TaeJa in a close 4-3 series. Soon afterwards he managed to win Season 1, Week 16 without losing a single game. He defeated Tassadar 2-0 in the Ro 8, TaeJa 3-0 in the Ro 4 and his teammate RevivaL 4-0 in the final.
However he could not initially overcome the GSL monkey, the classic wall for all rising Code B stars. Symbol managed to overcome Whale and Dream to make his Code A debut in GSL November. However, he was swiftly knocked out by Genius 2-0.
And then the big break happened. Symbol won Iron Squid Qualifier #1 where he notably defeated his teammates Polt and Shine. He was placed in Group B along with MC, Mvp, Idra, and Thorzain. While MC and Mvp were the undeniable favorites, Symbol managed to squeak through in second place to face MarineKingPrime. Fresh off a decisive victory at MLG Winter Arena, MKP was expected to stomp all over the new zerg. Instead Symbol exploited MKP's greedy openers with carefully timed attacks and all-ins. When the dust settled, the result shocked everyone: Symbol just 3-0'ed the hottest terran in the world and earned himself a trip to France.
And the surprises just keep on coming at Le Grand Rex. Before the semifinals no one would have thought that Nestea could be beaten by a Code B zerg in a premier tournament, let alone a match with time to prepare. But Symbol just had better strategies, better tactics, and better base management. If not for a overconfident push in Game 3 he would have swept Nestea 3-0. Nevertheless he defeated the God of Zerg handily and advanced to the final. Ultimately he could not overcome the multitasking and macro of MMA and lost 2-4, but earned the admiration of many fans and the attention of his peers.
This also signaled the beginning of GSL success. Symbol qualified for Code A in the 2012 GSL Season 2 Preliminaries, defeating RealMaker 2-0 in the Ro 4 and YongHwa 2-1 in the final of his group. From there he went through sC, Seed, and Jjakji to immediately enter Code S. Once again he exceeded expectations: winning his Ro32 group over Parting and MarineKing, getting through Ro16 by beating Squirtle and MarineKing (again!). And he was one game away from the Ro4 but collapsed against the eventual champion Seed.
While Symbol was somewhat mediocre in GSTL Season 1, he was the linchpin of TSL's success in GSTL Season 2. When his team was down 1-3 against Fnatic, Symbol brought them back with 4 straight wins over Moon, Oz, ByuL and aLive. The next day he was called to stop the rampaging Losira, who had won 4 straight games as the point player of Incredible Miracle. Symbol proceeded to make the greatest comeback in GSTL history, beating Losira, YoDa, Happy, Mvp, and Nestea. He also entered the record books by being the first player to complete a reverse all-kill in GSTL history. Although he could not repeat this feat a third time against SlayerS Symbol still had an amazing run. In total he had a 10-2 record, the best winning percentage out of all GSTL participants.

Sign me up one of the few great up and coming zergs and here's a fun little bit of brood war trivia, symbol played in gom classic (Can't remember which season it was) where he beat idra in the first round.

I am not saying that Symbol is bad but what about his play was impressive?
he defended every early agression by MKP?
and you know, MKP is best condition of his life, right?
The defense in the last game was not bad. That impressed you that much? You don´t seem to watch a lot of Starcraft. Even if MKP is in a good condition right now he played incredibly shitty today.

are you serious?
players like DRG/Leenock have problems against mkp's early pressures.
Symbol just outplayed MKP in every possibly way, MKP didnt played shitty, Symbol played better

MKP didn't play bad, he just played greedy. Like he always does. After a failed 2 rax he goes double CC. After failed early marine-hellion medivac aggression he gpes double CC. He didn't scout at all in game one.
Glad to see somebody finally do something against it instead of going "oh my g0d i let him get to three base on the 5 minute mark what do I do now??"
Hey I saw you in the Iron squid, just wanna say I loved your game there, I wanna wish you luck over at Paris! And I hope you'll win it <3! From a fellow zerg to another, gl with your career now! And I'd love to get added on the flanclub member list :3
This guy has been posting some great results. He's got a great chance of making it to Code S and is definitely Code S worthy.
For the OP, you need to rename this forum. When I did a search for Symbol I had a hard time finding this forum because it's name is "TSLSymbol" rather than "Symbol" or "TSL.Symbol". I would just call it the "Symbol fan club" -- most fan clubs just seem to be named after the player, probably because it makes it easier to search for them.
Hope he can beat Nestea and get to the finals in Iron Squid tomorrow. That guy needs a major tourney so everyone gets to know who the real Zerg symbol is !

What a great showing by Symbol this tournament, taking out MKP, Nestea, Idra and Thorzain. I'll admit that I was rooting for MMA in the finals, but even an MMA fan like myself couldn't help but to be impressed by Symbol's play. Taking 2 games off of the world's best TvZ player is not small feat, and Symbol demonstrated great play today. Congrats.

btw Symbol did qualified for MLG Spring Arena!!!!!
He'll do very well at MLG, I just watched his first person perspective and it was amazing to see! He's been on the rise for a while, can't wait to see where he ends up. So far, the sky is the limit.

To be fair, Team Polt just all-killed StarTale to win the KSL. But yeah, Symbol is really owning it up!
Team MKP ?
Team Polt = MKP
I forget where the joke came from now, might have been an MLG.
Clutch at MLG when he was getting all the team names wrong
Congratulations to Symbol for the first ever reverse all kill in GSTL history! It was amazing! Keep up the good work and good luck in the later rounds. Try not to beat up on marineking too much in the GSL first round. I would like to see the two of you get out of the group
This guy is insane when I watched the match against LG/IM I stoped at 4:0 and though it was over for M/TSL and know I miss a Moment in the GSTL History GG
First match vs MKP on code S was easily the best ZvT I've seen. Had everything from drops to burrowed banelings and massive tech switches. Symbol is sick good.
He played really beautiful. I have never seen such a brilliant use of the whole Zerg arsenal on Metropolis. This guy like artosis and tasteless said has a great future ahead of him. I wish him the best! Hope to see more awesome games in Code S from him.
This guy definitely has a good chance of being Code S champion I think. The only way he could lose is if MVP or Nestea plan their matches better in the later rounds, but I'm not sure even that can stop him. The guy showed some ridiculous macro even for pro level. As Tastosis pointed out, 80 larva after remaxing an army... WTF??

He is 4-1 against NesTea.
he beat him 3-1 in IronSquid ro4 and 1-0 GSTL.
IronSquid and GSTL are not the GSL, mindgames are more important than raw skill, "winners will be winners" come into play too.

well Ironsquid round of 4 was like GSL. They had 1 or 1.5 month for practice.
Symbol, one of the most talented Zerg i ever seen. When I watch his games at the Iron Squid, I hope I will hear about him again and see now, he's in Ro8 of the GSL. GG Symbol for beating Squirtle (thrist for revenge xD) and MKP (again xD).
Wow this beast of a player is the future of Zerg! His reverse all kill was one of the greatest sc2 moments for me yet! And after todays results in the GSL I feel like there's no stopping him!!
Lot of Symbol haters springing up in the LR thread, from where or why they hate I have no idea. All talking about how Symbol is only good because of the patch, ignoring the fact that he won 2nd place at Iron Squid before the recent buff. Seed is the one who was languishing in obscurity and unfulfilled potential until the endless buffs to protoss. When the day comes that all matchups in SC2 are balanced Symbol will be more relevant in the scene than Seed, bank on it.

The second half of your post is absolutely unnecessary, saying Seed is only good now because of " endless protoss buffs " is really rude. You shouldn't treat fan clubs as a place to trash other players.

This from the mind that brought you this gem on the first page of the LR thread:
Seed is just riding the protoss gravy train, I hope Symbol beats him.
Seed and Symbol are both up and coming players that are performing well. Attributing one or both of their successes to balance is completely subjective and just makes you look like a whiner. The fact is, both players played well for 5 games, but Seed came out on top with some impressive play.
Neither one of them is going anywhere, and I know Symbol can bounce back next season!
Symbol is owning this MSI Pro Cup. Crushed MaNa and SuperNoVa 2-0, and going to RO8 easily.
The SuperNoVa game was really interesting, because SuperNoVa exploited the map design of Shakuras Plateau to do a Tank/Marine/Bunker/Turret set-up on the cliff at Symbol's main against Mutas. Symbol takes the map, and techs to Brood Lord/Corruptor/Infestor. Despite losing 3/3, he has great upgrades for Air, and wins with excellent control.
I realized recently this guy is actually my favourite player right now ... and I'm not even signed up to his fan club. Sign me up please, Symbol plays Zerg the way it is meant to be played.
Tonight Symbol plays against Seed, Life, and Happy. Happy should be no problem for Symbol and his excellent ZvT, but he is honestly the underdog against the other two players. Life is arguably the best ZvZ player on the planet and Seed has zero exploitable holes in his gameplay. But Symbol is good enough to reach the Round of 8.
Heh, Symbol said on the group selection broadcast that he wanted to take revenge on all of the IM for the previous season. This was also the reason why he selected Happy to the group. He also stated that the ideal result would be that both of the IM players dropped out. I bet he's pretty satisfied now that it was him that nailed the coffin shut for both of them
I'm a bit worried for Symbol. Mvp is the champion of champions and I have no doubt he wants to keep that title. But we know that Symbol has beastly ZvT and won't let ravens get the better of him. Go Symbol!

Apparently using Infestor/BL/Corruptor automatically drops any Zerg in terms of respect.

We all know how much fun that composition is to watch.
While Symbol's ZvZ can be fairly shaky, and RorO has good ZvZ, Symbol can still be a strong ZvZ'er on occasion. Hack and Happy aren't too challenging, as Symbol's ZvT is still some of the best in GSL. Expecting Symbol to progress fairly easily.
While Symbol is capable of making it to Ro8, holy crap... Just... This group... I'll be honest, I doubt that Symbol is really capable of even passing this group because of the sheer amount of monsters in the form of Life and Leenock (both who look near invincible in any MU). Soulkey is probably fodder, but man, Symbol has to go through the best Zergs currently, and with Symbol's inconsistent ZvZ, he really has to go 100% just to pass.
Ah well, at least he did his best in the GoD, and I think that most people really did expect Symbol to lose. There's always IPL5, GSTL and the HoTS GSLs to watch out for.

These two have met quite often, and I think Symbol has the upper hand in terms of wins. If he continues his momentum, he can defeat MC, and face aLive who should be defeated quite easily.
I fear that either the eSF teams will be forced to merger with KeSPA or they will be forced to disband once their ace players start searching for greener pastures. If the latter happens, it's inevitable that SC2 will turn out just like BW.

eSF teams just don't have the sponsor power that KeSPA has, and were mainly run through personal investment or small corporations. Unfortunately, despite TSL's ability as a player mill, they just weren't sustainable enough as a business to retain their best players or even keep afloat financially. Sooner or later, I think some eSF teams will end up disbanding, and surrendering their players to KeSPA or foreign teams. Players like Symbol and HyuN I expect will stay in Korea, but might join foreign teams based on their success and "asking price" as premier players.
On January 12 2013 15:15 tili wrote: Is there any word on where Symbol will end up? I want him to get into a house asap for the practice/camaraderie!
In his interview for the wild card group Code S spot he says he hasn't gotten any offers to join a new team yet... Only TSL member to get a new team is MVPShine...
Looks like Symbol won 2-0 against Jaedong, he gets travel and hotel, and gets seeded into winners ro3. Good news for him after his team just disbanded.
I'm more happy this is Symbol making a comeback in the scene after his little slump, especially in ZvZ. He beat some strong players on his road, and took out some strong ZvZ'ers (he beat Jaedong, who just beat Monster, who just beat HyuN 2-0). Nice to see him in March.
Great play from Symbol the last 2 games, after falling behind against Creator and amazing hold in that last game. I was on the edge of my chair the whole time. Good luck in ro16!
Mixed bag of a group because I can see Symbol defeating and losing to any of these guys. Squirtle is a 50-50 because his PvZ is looking good, but Symbol is confident in his ZvP. MKP has been suffering from weak TvZ, while Symbol is confident in the match-up. Soulkey is an excellent preparer and Symbol has been struggling in ZvZ. Hopefully he progress with a strong record.
I feel bad for voting against Symbol in Liquibet, but my head often wins out against my heart on those. If Symbol wins, I'll be ecstatic though. Winning against the best ZvZ'er statistically is a major feat, especially in Symbol's current ZvZ rut. If Symbol makes it, I think the finals will be so much better, but if he falls, he still got over a huge roadblock that plagued him in GSL. Good luck Symbol, I'll be hoping to see you in the finals.
sso well played with the spine crawler attack this man has a really great game sense, was amazed when he drop the 4 spine crawler after seeing 0 drone at the natural !
Congrats Symbol for finally getting to the finals. Honestly long overdue, and totally surprised it was done on the back of ZvZ. Pleasantly surprised though.
Gonna be honest, I hoped for Curious advancing to the finals. However I've been a fan of Symbol for a long time as well, so it isn't as heartbreaking. Anyway, good job and good luck in the finals!
TSL is still alive in spirit at least. Symbol always referenced TSL in his interviews, and talks about how the TSL Zergs helped him in practice and strategy.
Well, this is it Symbol. After all those months of being on the absolute top of the proverbial mountain, to the lowest depths of how a player could sink, you finally made it. After numerous GSLs, foreign tournaments and showings of skill, this is the culmination of everything you invested your blood, sweat and tears into. Now go, win what is rightfully yours.
Tonight has to be his time. All those disappointments and failures only made him a stronger player, and I don't think he'll settle for anything else than first place.
You were close Symbol, so tantalizingly close to the peak
At least you proved you can stand with the best, and that determination with hard work can take you to places you thought unreachable. I know you can dominate HotS GSL, and I'm happy you still passed two massive roadblocks in the form of Ro8 and Curious. Might have not been a gold, but silver is enough to me.
Tough luck, he was on the verge of a comeback, then lost it all in one moment with a bad attack. RorO is really good in ZvZ when it comes to picking his engagements, very patient. Time for him to start playing HotS. Good luck in Season 2!
On April 17 2013 08:51 CosmicSpiral wrote: Been away for two and a half weeks, seems like forever since I've watched a game of SC2. :O
Good to hear that Symbol roared through the Ro32 though! Maybe people will start to think of him as more than a WoL patchzerg.
Symbol's image as a "patchzerg" is hopefully erased through this season. From what I've seen, not a single Brood Lord was made in his games, and smart usage of Nydus Worms and superb unit control dominated his opponents, rather than the BL/Infestor deathball so associated with Symbol.
Make it to another Ro8 Symbol! With Symbol's impressive play in the AIG qualifiers and improving upon the ZvZ that was his crippling Achilles Heel, Symbol is a more complete player in HotS.
Symbol faces Bomber tomorrow in GSL. Seeing their records in their match-ups, Symbol is favored immensely, boasting a much stronger ZvT than Bomber's TvZ. And just to put it in retrospect, Symbol has a 3-0 record against Bomber in HotS so far, and always bested him in those games. Knowing Symbol, he will prepare extensively and demonstrate why he is a symbol of consistency in GSL.
Symbol remains one of the most consistent and high reaching Zergs around in GSL. INoVation is an uphill battle though, but if Symbol prepares enough, he has a chance.
Symbol always gets difficult Ro4 opponents, but he proved he could overcome his ZvZ weakness against Curious, and maybe he can pull it off against INoVation. I'm favoring INoVation rationally, but in my heart, I would love it if Symbol could do it again. Good luck Symbol, you will need that and a bit more just to defeat INoVation.
Symbol progresses into the Ro16 in the OSL, proving his consistency beyond the GSL. Though he wasn't playing at his best (in an interview he said he was only playing at 30% of his skill) he still defeated Curious and Shine again, which is pretty nice considering his supposed weakness in ZvZ. As long as he can improve his ZvP for the future, he should be good to go for the rest of OSL.
Best of luck against PartinG in OSL! Knowing Symbol, his consistency is always going to shine, and against a recently PvZ weak PartinG, I think Symbol can take this with extensive preparation.
Symbol played very well today by defeating PartinG 2-1. His macro was excellent and composition against what PartinG threw were finely tuned against them. So far good progress in OSL.
If Symbol defeats soO, he makes it to the Ro8 of a Korean tournament for the third (or fourth) time in a row I believe. Symbol has always been an expert at preparing, and considering the situation, this is no different. Symbol should have this.
Symbol shouldn't have too much trouble against KeeN and Reality because his ZvT has always been solid, but Trap is a scary variable. I'm worried that Symbol is either demoralized from his recent poor showings or the AZUBU infrastructure problems, but Symbol has proven he can surpass the odds.
More good news with Symbol, he got a spot in the final Ro4 for the global qualifiers in the Red Bull Battlegrounds by defeating some notable names like Curious, TaeJa, CranK and Heart. Seems Symbol is back recently with his strong performances in online tournaments and consistent GSTL showings.
