I'd suggest instead of just youtube:ing random songs just keep checking this thread and the reddit sub. Subscribe to all the big youtube channels and you'll get into it fairly quickly. When you see a release you like by a group/person then look into them some more by checking out previous title songs. I'd say don't even spend time looking for former big names, there is just so much stuff to dig through and learn that you can still learn new stuff every day even when you've been into kpop for years.

Well there's three major parts of kpop imo: pop, hip-hop, and ballads.

Some of the current big names for each part. There are many many others of course, these are just some off the top of my head:

Pop: SNSD, Big Bang, Super Junior, 2NE1, Beast, TVXQ/JYJ (formerly DBSK), Shinee, Sistar, IU, EXO, Kara, 4 Minute, Busker Busker, KWill, Ailee, Apink

Hip-Hop: Dynamic Duo, Epik High, Verbal Jint, Primary (producer), San E, GD/T.O.P (of Big Bang), Jay Park, Leesang, Outsider, and then there's a more "underground" hip hop scene with some pretty good artists

Ballads: I could name a couple, but honestly not too familiar with this area, maybe someone else can help you out.

Can't really help you out with the older stuff either. As for finding music, you can search for online playlists on grooveshark, etc., seoul.fm, related video hopping on youtube, and regularly check this thread and r/kpop on reddit.
