if she was actually 'Miss A Suzy' then all of her solo promos would be associated with Miss A, which makes it exponentially difficult for advertisement considering it's easier to market a single image than two at once. In the case that Miss A breaks up or has some Kara or T-ara-esque crisis, Suzy's own solo image is largely unaffected by the group's PR.

Yes there was. In 2010 or 2011, not sure.. Last time they had to renew their contracts with DSP pretty much... Nicole's mother was very "vocal" about disagreeing with the contract. They layered up and got their contracts with DSP and UMJ changed in their favors.
During the layering up when KARA members and DSP wouldn't even speak directly without lawyers they were a lot of rumors that the group and the agency would not come to a understanding and not renew their contracts.
Right now, Nicole's contract is again up for renewal in January and she hasn't renewed it yet. Jiyoung's contract is also up in February I believe and she also didn't renew it yet. Gyuri, Seungyeon and Hara have renewed their contracts.
Nicole has stated that she wishes to have more opportunities as a person and that she doesn't want to be forever stuck in the "KARA's Nicole" shell so to speak. She wants to renew her contract as KARA's Nicole with DSP but she doesn't want DSP to own her exclusively so to speak, she wants to also be able to sign somewhere else as a solo artist or what have you. That's the current issue. Nothing has been said about it since Nicole took to Twitter to express her views about this a month or so ago.
Jiyoung said multiple times that she wishes to study abroad but has not confirmed that that may or may not be the cause of her contract not yet renewed.
I hope I explained the situations correctly, clearly and truthfully as possible.
nicole had major issues with the contract and her mother was making a fuss in the media. I'm actually unclear how much of the entire thing was driven by her mother's contention with contract terms. jiyoung & hsy also had small issues with the contract but not so much that they wanted to break up the group. hara was filming when the thing started and apparently she had no clue about the entire thing. She was the first to drop out litigation, followed shortly by jiyoung & hsy. I think gyuri sided with DSP from the beginning.
later on that shit was sorted out behind closed doors. official statement iirc was 'lol misunderstanding guys' and 'management still cares even when ceo is hospitalized'.
I'm pretty curious that nicole wasn't thrown out of the group altogether considering news articles alleged that she all but 'instigated' it.
anyways, Kara took a hiatus for a while before promoting again (step iirc?). point is, suzy aint gotta deal with that shit if it metaphorically hits the fan. Hara just did some drama during their hiatus lol.
