I got linked to kpop through a random kpop video that had nothing to do with kpop. I had Korean friends but none of them are into kpop either and most of them actually gave me shit, so I didn't fit in at all.
edit- to your edit, I have no idea what some of my favorite artists look like, I don't know where they live, if they're single married etc., I only listen to their albums.
Same for some non kpop korean music I like.

yes......ahhh i see now..
well, yeah i guess that is kind of cool
I have always associated music with artists my whole life. While i was into Zeppelin I read their whole autobiography, collected memorabillia etc
nowdays, i do research lots of kpop stars on wiki, read about them and keep up to date with their news...
i think we might view music in general in two very different ways

People from the hood tend to be nicer than you think.

Led Zeppelin were the most shrewdly marketed band in history. Everything was controlled to make them seem larger than life. I enjoy listening to their music occasionally (my mum has just about everything they ever released on vinyl and cd) but you seem to be a willing victim of a manipulative music industry.
Sure, I will ogle pictures of cute Kpop girls, I'm only human, but if they make music I don't enjoy I'm going to lose interest, and I certainly won't defend bad releases because of any sort of loyalty. Music should be about music, first and foremost.

That's funny because this is actually the song that got my roommate into Kpop. Great track.

Here's my take on it (long car ride gave me time to think).
I do like the music, but the idols give a lot to the experience as well. Western pop is catchy enough, musically, but the pop scene makes me hate it. It's associated heavily with clubs and the type debauchery that I don't partake in. The girls that sing are almost all slutty and/or annoying (a few exceptions, of course), and the guys are always over-feminine or douche-y. And the content of the songs are usually horrid, always about getting smashed, hooking up with strangers, and other such amoral annoyances that I hate in society.
Kpop has been different experience. The idols (at least most of them/the ones I follow) give off a more wholesome vibe than, say, Ke$ha or Britney Spears (does she still sing? Who cares). They're really idols, meant to give off an air of someone to be idolized and who are respectful. Even if it's just an act, it's a good one, and one I can enjoy. The music, as well, generally is less about sex, drugs, and the glamorous lifestyle that Western pop worships and I hate. Instead, you get a lot of cute love songs and fun things, as well as amazing ballads. I actually like looking up translations just to enjoy the content of the music I listen to.
So yeah, it's about half and half, idols to music. I'd probably enjoy the same music if it was in English, sung by an American group who had the same personas as the Korean groups, but there's really not that many (or any at all) like that.

If its not a case where it actually happens to sound EXACTLY the same which I dont think siamese twins could pull off.
lets say, remove Hyorin from SISTAR, would you still enjoy their actual songs just as much? I'd enjoy the visuals more.

First time poster, long time follower of K-pop and this thread.
I think one of the things that has kept me really into K-Pop is the fact that I don't know the exact words and their meanings. With English music once I learn the words a song can quickly get old especially if I overplay it. However with Korean music there are almost 'steps' of understanding as I go from hearing sounds and noises to rough words and phrases to going so far as to start learning korean to better grasp some of the lyrics.
It's almost like a challenge and a learning experience, that I think has had a part in keeping K-Pop so amazing to me.
Pretty faces and legs and such certainly got me first hooked, but now I almost am engulfed by the culture and world of Koreans... both in Starcraft 2 and K-Pop, that I think is an awesome thing.

and yeah I'm finding that I really want to learn the words as well...ive looked up some words and have asked my Korean friend at school what some mean...it would be awesome to be able to understand it by myself one day
