To ensure this thread won't be closed, you must adhere to several a number of simple rules;
  • Please use spoilers when quoting a post with pictures and/or videos.
  • When posting large quantities of media (pictures or videos), please begin spoilering after the first piece. Grouping related videos in the same spoilers & labeling is recommended.
  • No reposting of old material unless justified
  • Posting any material with little or no relevent discussion accompanying it
  • No passion-induced flaming of each other because 'x said y sucked' etc.
  • Keep the expression hate of music individuals/groups to a minimal level
  • No 'pagetopping' in any form whatsoever, as it constitutes spam equal to posts similar to 'first'.
  • No vulgar fan fics or wet dream stories. It is creepy, weird, and it dehumanizes the people who you are here to celebrate/discuss.
  • Normal posting standards that you find throughout the rest of the site still apply and will be enforced more strictly from here forward (2012/03/11)

Due to the poor nature of this thread in the past, temporary two-day bans will occur more than often if people slip up.

What doesn't make any sense is why the he decides to post any of this on Reddit in the first place. Why would you not take this shit straight to the media? Juicy news brings juicy money.

Perhaps it's because he's in a job with a decent salary and doesn't wanna get fired and/or ostracized from Korea just yet? Consulting for these entertainment companies rake in quite a bit of money I would imagine.

If I were in his position I'd be hard-pressed to simply drop it all as well if I'm not financially stable for the next 30 years.

Either because it's not news or because he wants to keep his job, take your pick lol.

edit to below: mind you he's not leaking anything so far, zero facts absolutely nothing. Might as well be a troll.

These kinds of leaks bring shit storm regardless of where it is at (Netizens are crazy good at finding shit), if he was trying to secure any sort of finance then why even tell anybody now.

But he wasn't trying to secure any finance, perhaps he just wanted to vent? It was a throwaway reddit account as well.

So things posted on reddit means it's true now? Hmm...

How about the person provides the info to a legit news agency under terms to remain anonymous instead..?

Nobody ever proved that this was true, you're right on that. But are you so naive that you think the Jang Ja Yeon suicide scandal was all faked as well?

Not sure if I should link this here, but it's pretty interesting and related to kpop:

Pretty depressing too, but it's not like people didn't speculate such things to happen beforehand.

Idk.

It's a delicious thought that the industry works to hard to present these girls as 'pure-hearted' virgins only to whore them out in backrooms.

I'm assuming this is true for the top girl groups as well.

yeah no wonder they get no sleep, this is pretty ugly there's only so long you can pretend you don't know about it

The whole business is pretty sick considering how young most of the girls are when they receive their 'training'. A 10-12 year old's sensibilities are severely malleable. They're probably conditioned to to tolerate abuse and brainwashed into thinking their lives glamorous.

But seriously. I can't get over the fact that a lot of these girls are ACTUALLY forced into underage prostitution.

I wonder what makes Korean culture tolerate this sort of thing.

What I -really- don't understand is that the fact that kpop isn't a relatively new thing in korea, so obviously these sorts of shady business have been going on for awhile.

I honestly hope the korean government does some heavy investigations into this matter, if this sort of scandal happens in North America or even in Europe:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jang_Ja-yeon

the public would simply never let go of it - it'd be an uproar. But it seems like it was just a breeze in korean media, with light sentences on the offenders as well.

As a foreigner, it's easy to see what they're (rumored, can't say confirmed since the OP in the reddit post wants to be anonymous) to be doing is atrocious. But a korean friend of mine says that Koreans have a heavily patriarchal society and that korean women are subservient to the max as well, so it wouldn't be too unbelievable for them to just take it.

It's just sick.

I'm starting to think that South Korea's total embrace of Christianity has really perverted their values.

The contradictory obsession with sex, yet claiming to idolize 'purity' is distinctly Roman Catholic.

It's pretty impressive the number of adults in this thread who un-ironically ogle these girls without feeling some measure of disgust with their situation.

The unlikeliness of kpop truly going global is due to this. The exploitation story is just too good for Western media to ignore.

Protestantism is much more prominent that Catholicism in South Korea. Within this South Korean Protestantism, the main theme is neo-Calvinism.

/Korean culture

/off-topic.

I think you're right.

But I think my generalization still applies.

Nah. Although I would agree that the Calvinism in South Korea is often sickening and sometimes just downright disgusting, the outward artificial prudence that masks the debauchery within modern South Korea has its roots in a society that predates the inception of Christianity by a great deal of time. Blaming Christianity for South Korea's social issues is a rather shallow and juvenile critique.

From the Kim Sung-hoon case.

Show nested quote +
According to South Korean reports, Jang claimed that her agent Kim Sung-hoon had regularly beaten her and forced her to have sex with a string of VIPs, including directors, media executives and CEOs. Kim Sung-hoon, who was in Japan, denied the accusations.[8] Internet users later uncovered a partial list of the 31 people involved, including Bang Sang Hoon, CEO of Chosun Journal; Vice-President of Sports Chosun, Bang Myung-Hoon; Chosun Central Journal's Director of Advertising, Lee Jae Young; Chairman of Kolon, Lee Woong Ryeol; Chairman of Lotte, Shin Kyuk Ho; former KBS PD, CEO of Olive 9, Go Dae Hwa; producer (PD) of KBS’s “Geumji Ok Yeob”, Jun Chang Geun; producer (PD) for KBS, MBC, SBS, Jung Seho; producer (PD) for KBS’s “Boys Over Flowers”, Jun Gi Sang; and Broadcasting/Music PD of “Playful Kiss”, “Boys Over Flowers”, “Perfect Couple” and “Goong”, Song Byung Joon. Chosun Journal later issued a statement saying that it was not their current CEO, Bang Sang Hoon, but their former CEO, whose name has not been revealed. [9]

The former manager of Jang's management agency, Kim Sung-hoon, was arrested in Tokyo, Japan in June 2009 for overstaying his visa. Korean police requested Kim's extradition on a warrant related to Jang's death. Kim at the time of his arrest stated that he "committed a crime in South Korea and overstayed in Japan to avoid being arrested."[10] twenty figures were investigated by the police, resulting in seven prosecutions. Kim was sentenced to one year in jail, two years of probation and 160 hours of community service.[11]

Look at the list of people involved. Now look at the punishment for the main perpetrator of the time.

One year in jail.

You think an aspiring journalist wants to go against that?

We are not given the charges. For driving somebody to suicide, assaulting, and forcing rape you're going to get that punishment? Hardly. I don't know shit about the Korean law but it doesn't seem like he was charged with any of that. It makes absolutely no fucking sense that somebody would post any of this on Reddit first instead of going to any media outlet and letting them know.

I never claimed that scandal was real/fake, I'm just questioning why everyone thinks this random person who is posting stuff on reddit is actually legit. I don't know how trustworthy mods on reddit are, but the approach taken by this person is questionable..

Sure, there may be some truth in what they say, but people need to take things with a grain of salt. I'd question more about legitimacy of the poster before accepting what's being said..

The important thing to take way from the Jang Ja Yeon scandal was the laundry list of people in the industry that were involved and the lack of any justice rendered whatsoever.

One CEO and literally dozens of VPs, and producers were implicated.

Worst of all, the Korean public didn't give a shit and instead chose to 'mourn' her death while deliberately ignoring the tragedy that drove her to suicide.

Everyone remembers about the list that Jang wrote, but no one seems to remember that it was found to be fabricated.

http://www.allkpop.com/2011/03/national-forensic-service-confirms-that-jang-ja-yeons-letters-were-fabricated

Unless of course, you believe the NFS to be corrupt as well, but at some point you have to trust the government. Or maybe not, if you're into the conspiracy theory sort of thing.
