That's right, all you American fans, in this event co-hosted by KBS World, you just might win a chance to fly to Korea; get a free pass to see Girls' Generation on KBS' music show, Music Bank live; and an access to Mvibo aka Korean goodies heaven! Eligibility Applicants have to be 1) non-Korean who doesn't have Korean as their first language and 2) willing to make a trip to Korea if an air ticket gets rewarded. Please note that only ONE ticket will be given no matter how many people there are in one group. Schedule To start off, download the application here, and fill it in. Along with a demo CD/DVD that briefly introduces yourself, mail it to: Korean Cultural Center, 5505 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036 Attn: K-pop Contest Be sure to mail it before the 20th! The people who made the cut will be announced on the 28th via the KCCLA website. The first round will be on the 14th of May, 2011 at the Korean Culture Center, where you can perform any kind of K-Pop song! Make sure to give it your best shot in front of the judges, and your name just might be announced as one of the finalists on the 16th of May. The second round will be on the 27th of May, and finalists will compete on an even larger and professional stage, which will be recorded by KBS America to be aired on KBS. Prizes The first winner will receive a round-trip air ticket to Korea, and access to see Music Bank live. You never know when Girls' Generation would make a sudden comeback in Korea, and you just might get lucky! Not only that, you can also have a free access to Mvibo, where you can download all sorts of dramas, movies, and music videos for one whole year. If the 1st prize winner is a group of more than two, the other members (who do not receive the air ticket) will be given a Korean restaurant coupon worth $200. The second winner will receive more than 20 assorted K-Pop CDs, $200-worth coupons to a Korean restaurant in LA, and free access to Mvibo for 6 months! The third winner will receive $200-worth coupons to a Korean restaurant in LA and free access to Mvibo for 3 months! Last but not least, for the participant(s) who receives the best response from the audience, the Shining Star Prize, will be awarded a CGV Cinema voucher (worth $150) and free access to Mvibo for one month! So, what are you waiting for? You can start trying to win this opportunity of a lifetime by downloading the application here! Good luck! Now i dont even know if snsd will be performing there but w/e free ticket to Korea sounds good. I don't know if anyone remembers this contest. I just got back from LA where I was one of the 17 finalists and I thought I'd give a little recap of what it was like. It was a really awesome event. It was held in a concert hall in downtown LA. Heads of KBS America and Korean Air and Korean Cultural Center LA were there as judges. There was a TV crew and everything. The contestants did interviews for the Korea Daily newspaper in Koreatown LA as well. I'd say there were about 150ish people in the auditorium and they were a really awesome audience. Very supportive of everyone trying to sing Korean songs. All the contestants were really nice as well cheering for everyone backstage. The organizers gave us a choice of Kpop cd's as gifts (I got Hoot!) and the head of KBS America gave us all a 4gb KBS America usb thumb drive lol. There was an MC hosting the show who gave all the contestants short little interviews before we performed. He asked me who my favorite member of SNSD was and I said Sunny. He asked why and I said because on a variety show a couple years ago she was catching chickens and I thought that was cool hahaha. Crowd got a laugh out of that one. As far as the performances go, there was a lot of variety with some songs I had never heard before(to be fair I am pretty new to Kpop anyway). A 9 year old girl sang "If I leave" by Jo Soo Mi and was a huge hit with the crowd. She was the cutest thing ever lol. A 50+ yr old woman sang "Moo Jo Gun" and was also a huge hit with the crowd. These two won the crowd favorite awards. Two other girls did "Ma Boy" by Sistar19 with the waves and all. Few other did IU songs like "The Story Only I Didn't Know" and "I Need a Boy". One guy did a medley of Taeyang songs and he was a great dancer, and I thought for sure he was going to win. That was until the last girl went who sang "8282" by Davichi. She had an incredible voice and was just way better than everyone else. She won the trip to Korea and definitely deserved it. They even mentioned that if Music Bank has time when she goes, that she might be able to perform on the show. That would be pretty sweet. For me, I made an acoustic arrangement of Into The New World by SNSD. It was pretty original because everyone else was singing along to the instrumental versions of their songs, but I just played the guitar and sang without anything else. I wasn't nervous to begin with but by the time I got halfway through the song I was practically shaking haha. I've never performed solo in front of so many people and cameras before so it was pretty intense. Everyone was super supportive though and a couple people came up to me afterwards saying they enjoyed my version of the song, including this one ridiculously cute Korean chick in a blue dress. That was probably the highlight of the whole event for me right there hahahaha. I probably made a complete fool of myself on stage, who knows, I barely remember performing lol. It was a lot of fun though. So yeah that's about it. Awesome experience even though it was completely nerve wracking at times. I had never been to LA either so the whole trip was pretty cool for me. This was just the first annual contest, too. They said they will for sure be doing it again next year. If you guys love Kpop you should totally try out next year. I bet the prizes will be even better the longer they do it. Kpop fighting! | ||
