I am not a movie critic, in fact quite the opposite, for me a movie has to be uwe-bole level bad before I will actively dislike it. I really loved Avatar as a full experience. It captured the childhood dream of mine, and I'm guessing many others, where you enter into a fantastical world, find love, adventure, and become the hero perfectly. I don't care if it was a stereotypical story, or sub-par acting, it was never bad enough to pull you out of the experience, which is all I was expecting/wanting from this movie.
I feel sorry for people who cannot watch a movie like this and enjoy it for what it is.
Yes overhyped, yet still one of the most enjoyable movie experiences I've had.

Even though I got the BluRay of this I kinda feel bad knowing there's 2 more versions coming out within a year, at least I get 3-D and special features with the releases coming.

Anyone has the original screenshot of this Pocahontas essay (btw writted solely for this purpose of humiliating Avatar)? I want to play around so I can literally fit any movie into it.
Who are you James Cameron? It was a joke, relax.

It's a minor disappointment for me that the movie isn't going to break 750m in the US and 2b worldwide. So near, yet so far indeed.

I fully agree with this. I saw it once, and I'll probably never watch it again. The visuals were amazing, but the story just wasn't good enough to bring me back for more. Enjoyable, but nothing spectacular. Definitely overrated, imo, but probably not as terrible as I assume many have made it out to be.

Didn't meet my expectations, but was still fine to watch once. maybe twice.

I was blown away by this movie. Didn't need a great story...didn't need great characters. I could just watch hours and hours of cameras panning over the world.
I watched it twice in theaters and wish I had gone more!

But no for me it was more like how this white guy chases the native girl but has to learn the ways of her culture before he can get with her. - Oh and the"bad guys" are chasing GOLD (read: unobtanium) and they don't appreciate nature or other cultures which is really the moral of the whole story. I mean it's soooo obvious it would only be amusing for you to intentionally turn a blind eye to it. I guess the main difference is the awesome gunfights explosions etc in Avatar because it's not G-rated.
did I mention that there's a big fucking tree that talks to you!??? HELLO???

Yeah, I rage about it too often. That essay was used as an argument one too many times, people take that stuff quite seriously. I'm sure it's funny initially.
Somehow "pocahontas in space" is supposed to completely discredit any movie from being good, because surprisingly some of the typical love stories are similar. I wonder if anyone mentioned Shakespeare yet...

Saw this like 2 minutes ago on DVD. Pretty hard not to be entertained.
Too bad cheesy love scenes are inescapable with JC. Still, good flick. I imagine it was pretty amazing in 3D/imax. The long sweeping/landscaping shots were impressive enough on my mere 40" plasma w/ regular DVD quality.

I thought the hype was over so i can freely criticize a film of the recent past ?
Pretty much all mainstream sci-fi films and series (save bsg and caprica which are still better than avatar) are alot more consistent than avatar, and above all, have original ideas. The only reason to be entertained is watching the banshee-like ships and thor-like mechs :D
The series/films i found to be more consistent and with original content which i like the most is stargate (sg1, atlantis. universe, the various films). Too bad mgm has financial problems. They should have made a horrible series and/or film with no original content and no consistency BUT which appeals to the masses, like dancing with smurfs in space while pretending to be pocahontas. Then they would be full of money.
Now try to apply the pocahontas method to stargate.

yeah, just saw this a few days ago as well. cool, but definitely very much overrated. if not for the super crazy visuals and the name director, no one gives a shit because of the very weak storyline.
it's not a bad movie or anything, but how it was even considered to be half as good as The Hurt Locker is beyond me.

I remember thinking about this when I saw the movie - since they have sex by connecting their hair, does that mean they actually fuck their horses/air creatures too?

its the highest grossing film in the world
no its not overhyped you just got some sand in your vagina.

I personally felt it was overhyped. I watched it, and it really wasn't anything spectacular for me. Just a lot of blue butts, and a predictable plot that is almost a complete copy of Pocahontas.
|
Wasn't impressed, went in expecting very little to no story, and some nice special effects, while it had the special effects, they didn't live up to what everyone was shitting their pants over.
