Love the fanboys foaming at the mouth.
Humanity does overconsume and overexploit the planet and it's incredibly sad that we've developed a material-based society that emphasizes consumption.
Now, for all you who loved that message, why not go out and do something about it instead of arguing about how awesome you think Avatar is when some people think the movie had a stupid story.
P.S. archer, there are more things in life than SF movies. Some of them even have good storytelling. You should try them out for a change, rather than glorifying this pile of blue dookie known as Avatar.

No, I'm still angry that terminator had bad science!
Mythbusters also told me that the grappling hook on the batmobile was also scientifically impossible, so now I hate batman too.

My retort: In terms of the technology, eco-systems, etc... Avatar is the least believable. Ask around
But yes, you are right about the the floating mountains: its an alien property that is truly science-FICTION. Though I find it funny how you dismiss the movie as having "little to no science". So far, you admit to a major ting that's unscientific, without giving me anything specific that IS scientific.Show nested quote + Also, we can travel to other solar systems and transport stuff to make a city, but we can't make a windshield out of something that won't be shattered by a wooden arrow? That has nothing to do with science. Oh, I'm sorry. I must've missed the part where the Na'vi enchanted their arrows with Na'vi magickery. Its one of those childish discussions like the spinal thing. (imo, no offense lol. just my opinion) So if it doesn't fit in with your argument, it's childish. I see.

Material-based society isin't necessarily bad. From a moral point of view, maybe it is bad; but its all arguable based on our perceptions. I think its mostly a good thing The problem is sustainability. We are clearly living in credit card debt from nature, and most of us don't realize it nor do we care. And the people who do care can't do anything about it (Avatar is NOT sustainable... at all.). So there's a problem...just right now, we'l fine and dandy.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying a movie with terrible science. It is fiction. There is, however, a problem with defending an unscientific movie by claiming supposed scientific merits.

OK, so you say a material culture isn't bad, the problem is sustainability. You can't see the conflict between the two?
Unless you start neutering 80% of the human population, any kind of material-based society is going to continue raping the sustainability of the planet.

L doesn't understand that. I said ages ago that I enjoyed the movie, thought the plot/storytelling was bad, and that there were inconsistencies in the science. Since then, it's just been a debate about whether or not the science was legit. L decided he wants to make posts that belabor a point nobody's arguing.

Lol why don't you guys argue about how a 6-year flight to ANYWHERE in space would require near-relativistic speeds, which would cause much more time to pass on Pandora, leaving everybody waiting for Jake to get there dead long ago.

lol you're right but FTL is such a trope that nobody bothers anymore. We just take it for granted that yeah yeah, FTL, warp to other planet. SF is too boring without aliens

Nah, I just like reminiscing about the sci-fi films of my childhood.
Terminator was pretty awesome.

I don't get how you can argue with this. The fact is: We can't go on living the way we do now.
I honestly personally don't care if we do continue to live like this or not. I have no idea what the solution is. And I don't think all that many people have any real solutions either.
Whether we genocide 2 billion people to diminish human population or we change the way we live; I don't really care. But we're going to have to change the way we interact with nature or face the consequences. That is the fact and beyond that fact, I don't have anything else to say.
