Bloody hell.

When I posted earlier in the threat (saying Avatar was a huge disappointment, failed on every level except 3D, which didn't even work if you weren't in the middle of the theatre), I kind of assumed I was arguing against people who could forgive such glaring flaws, and generally thought it was quite good.

In fact, it turns out half of team liquid think's its a 10/10 film.... ???????? I can't understand this.

Now I'm willing to accept some of the counter-arguments, and admit I went in with the wrong expectations (I assumed 10 years of writing plus infinite budget= passable storyline/dialogue/acting), and as such kinda fucked myself up.
If instead I had went in thinking, 'well it's going to be rubbish but with occasional cool stuff and a big american 'that's entertainment!' kind of feel, and I should take it for that', then I concede I could have found it quite good fun.

(end of concessions)

What I can't see, is how someone could POSSIBLY call it a 10/10 film. What criteria do you use? 'I like it therefore it's good?' 'Graphics=all?' 'Dialogue= irrelevant?' If anyone who calls it a 10/10 film can list some other films they think deserve such honour, I'd be really curious.

Also, a lot of people are defending Avatar's story by saying 'there are no original stories left, so it doesn't matter'. This is clearly ridiculous.
Just because there are no new story structures, doesn't mean all stories are unoriginal. Take Up or District 9. Of course they didn't reinvent the wheel, but they managed to present and synthesise old stories into something new, something interesting, something without hundred's of cliches and total predictability. Not high art. But something worth praising.

At one point I closed my eyes to listen to the music and then I fell asleep. The presentation was great, but it was hard to get emotionally invested in the movie when so many cliches were flying about. Still it's what I expected out of a Hollywood blockbuster. A movie doesn't have to be any good to make a lot of money.

maybe you should?

btw i watched this movie in 2d and have yet to see a 3d version. I can only imagine what its going to look like haha. Also i knew nothing about it before i got there so mass hype + bandwagon effect is just another senseless comment

Tal i dont think many people called it a 10/10 movie( well i did) so dont generalize. Your points have been processed 100 times in this thread, come up with something that can stand up to the argument. I watched district 9 myself and, even though im a big sci fi fan, i wasnt nearly as amused by it as i was by avatar. It was interesting for sure but not even close

whoever fell asleep during the movie just keep it to yourself. At some point in life you probably fell asleep masturbating just to wake up on the couch in the living room with your family surrounding you and a thick crust on your stomach. If you payed 14$ and fell asleep youre retarded, thats about it.

The reason why I think that the ratings are so skewed between 10/10 and a few who have given low ratings such as 5/10 is because they rate it based on different reasons. Personaly I give the movie a 10/10 based on entertainment. Some people are over analyzing the movie imo.

Man, I agree 100%, you're not alone. They rate 10/10 movies like Jason Bourne and Batman, then you're surprised they rate Avatar 10/10. You just expect too much from the wrong people.

Its hard to critique a critique (I think this is what everyone is doing lol) unless you know where the person is coming from. The people who enjoy film as an art will obviously not like Avatar as much as people who enjoy film as entertainment. It all depends on what your definition of a movie is. There are aspects in Avatar I think people in both categories would like, and that is the special effects. I enjoy film as both an art and a form of entrainment. I liked District 9 and Synecdoche : New York. However, I enjoy film as an form of art most of the time. Now you know where I am coming from, I give Avatar a range of 6.9-7.5 out of 10.

When the guy makes two movies where we know the story pretty much and/or we know the ending of it (Titanic) and it still makes over a billion dollar and become the two largest gross in history, I do think its much much more than hype and bandwagon effect.

...especially when both Titanic and Avatar didn't have any previous real brand name, no stars whatsoever, that relies heavily on word-of-mouth then all I can say is that both movies won big based on its own merits.

I can probably agree the "bandwagon effect" for the latter portion of its boxoffice earnings, but Avatar (and Titanic for that matter) had no real hype. It was tracking at 40 million $ opening weekend TWO WEEKS before it was opening; that means it was predicted to have approx 300-400 million $ overall total gross worldwide based on its hype meter (major flop). Here we are at over 1.1 billion $. The movie actually had less hype than Alvin and the Chipmunks 2.

Just adding my 2 cents (well more like a few small fun facts)

Muwahahahaha

With no sign of letting up, Avatar is poised again to stay on top of the box office this coming weekend, maintaining its stronghold on attendance.

For the past three weeks, the blockbuster has been a record-breaking hit in the US and internationally over the holidays. Currently, in the US Avatar accounts for 84 percent of online ticket sales heading to its fourth weekend at the box office.

The film is now the number-three all-time worldwide box office behind The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Titanic. It's reached the $1.1 billion mark in revenue with the strong overseas reception. In 2009, Avatar took the second spot for the year's box office after only two weeks in release. Director James Cameron could eclipse his own Titanic.

Go ahead haters. Feel elitist like you know how to make a great movie and James Cameron doesnt. Cause as we all know the real problem is with all the "braying masses" who dont know true value like you do :p

Hey I was wondering if someone with a better knowledge of the na'vi language could answer this. I've seen the movie a couple times and I THINK that the language is choppy. What i mean by this, is that it seems like the sentence structure changes from subject-verb to verb-subject a lot. I may be hearing it wrong, but I was just curious. Overall, though, the movie was pretty amazing, especially in 3D

Twilight made $400 million dollars in ticket sales. This must mean Twilight is a superior movie to every other movie that grossed less than $400 million in ticket sales right? Because ticket sales should be the ultimate arbiter in what's considered quality.

Clearly the quality of a piece of work has no impact on its popular reception, right?
