I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know wheter this has been mentioned before, but even more than from Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves, I thought Avatar stole an incredible amount from Princess Mononoke. The whole story is so similar it's ridiculous and Avatar stole a lot of the smaller ideas as well (the beast charge looks exactly like Princess Mononoke's boar charge for example).

I enjoyed the film thoroughly. It wasn't some great movie that I'll watch numerous times; but for sheer entertainment value it was fantastic.

I doubt he has watched Princess Mononoke but yeah, I found it shockingly similar in some ways, I think you're the first one I've read other than me to notice it. Although I found Princess Mononoke to be far superior in the storytelling aspect.

Although I found Princess Mononoke to be far superior in the storytelling aspect. lol James Cameron very likely saw Princess Mononoke. It's been out in US theatres and had a lot of critical acclaim and it's the kind of foreign film that most film makers who work in CGI/animation (like Cameron does) tend to check out solely to keep up with what others in the industry are doing. And personally, it was more like Last Samurai than it was like Princess Mononke. There was no attempt to hunt the god of the forest in Avatar. They were trying to knock it down to drive the Na'vi away. AKA, like how the Japanese wanted to clear out Katsumoto to build their railroad. Also, the protagonist has a curse on him which makes him seek out a cure. This is similar to Princess Mononoke but it's also similar to Last Samurai! Boar curse vs alcoholism. Then both are "cured" by the pure, native culture and their simple way of life. In the end though, Princess Mononoke is not as trite and cliche. The guy never actually joins the animals. That's what Mononoke does. She's not the main character. Last Samurai is the one where the foreigner takes charge and leads them. In Avatar, it's the foreigner who does it too. Princess Mononoke is the odd one out. Also, in both Mononoke and Last Samurai the end is bittersweet. In both, the animals/natives don't win. They lose but make a lasting impression on their conquerors. Only Avatar with its saccharine plot has the natives "win." Probably to set up a lame sequel. Overall, it's just your archetypal "going native" story. A protagonist haunted by his life, seeking a change/cure, stumbles upon a native culture that is at first hostile, then over time opens up to him, as he persistently and somewhat clumsily tries to connect with them on a human/soulful level. Then his former life comes back to haunt him with gifts in hand, and he's forced to make the moral choice between siding with "his own kind" or forging a new loyalty with the natives who helped cure him. Inevitably, he chooses to side with the new friends because that's what any brave/unconventional protagonist does and it's enlightened because the natural reaction is to side with your own kind. Then they fight, blah blah, the protagonist knows the ins and outs of the other side because he used to be one of them, shows the natives what to do, and then they ride to victory or put up such a valiant struggle that everyone's touched by their bravery. The End. Bank $1 billion.

There have been thousands upon thousands of movies made. They all have similarities and just because some are more closely related than others doesn't equate to stealing. Perhaps stealing's the wrong word, but you can't deny that Avatar's extremely heavily influenced by a few movie classics, more so than most other films. While it's almost impossible to make a completely original movie, having an original plot or original ideas in it's a sign of quality and Avatar scores very low there.

DID YOU REALLY NOT SEE ALIEN? EVER EVER EVER?! Sorry for retarded caps lock but i am totally SHOCKED. Obviously this guy meant Sigourney Weaver who played Ellen Ripley in Alien movies so for most ppl Weaver = Ripley ![]() About Avatar - too long, and i think that if you didn't see the trailer you'd be VERY disappointed by it. I saw trailer and already got in mindset that i will be watching Pocahontas with great special effects so yeah, I went, saw special effects - they were good, not something "omfg soooo awesoem" but good, but got bored b4 movie ended. Plus really if it had at least a little creative plot that would be movie worth recommendation. Otherwise - watch if you want to have some fun with special effects (Unless you didn't see Transformers 2 yet, then give it priority it has a little better plot loool. And cute actress as well ![]() In short - only good side of this movie = special effects. But what else could anyone expect with this trailer?
