I missed a modern antagonist. That over the top military doom toon was really tacky, I would have liked a serious version of the corporate guy to be the focus. I didn't like Trudy either, it was like they cut her out of S.W.A.T. The horses look stupid. ^^

I agree. It happens, and is terrible. It shouldn't happen. I'm fine witha movie making thoise points. My problem with Avatar was that so many of the bad guys' one liners and attitudes weren't obviously (I thought) meant to evoke the current "War on Terror", which while a mistake and problematic, is to me a separate issue. As you say, the movie was conceived before Iraq and deals with problems that were around before Iraq. That being so, I thought the movie ould have done without the obvious callouts to the situation in Iraq. But I'm probably retarded. And this is Why I edited out my post ![]()

The film then went on to win countless awards and continues to be the highest grossing film of all time at 1.8 Billion Dollars! One critic, Kenny Turan, continued to write scathing reviews even as it became a cinematic phenomenon. Among the many "hate mail" he recieved was a teenage girl who stappled multiple Titanic tickets to the letter to show how many times she had been to see the movie. Later Cameron issued his own response to Kenny Poor Kenny. He sees himself as the lone voice crying in the wilderness, righteous but not heeded by the blind and dumb 'great unwashed' around him. It must be a great burden to be cursed with such clear vision when your misguided flock bray past you, like lemmings, unmindful." -James Cameron He later said this about critics and Titanic (I should add that Cameron, genius though he may be, is aparently not the most likable guy) We were branded as the biggest idiots in movie history. They were just sharpening their knives so they could really take the film apart. Then they couldn't. So, fuck them. Fuck 'em all. -James Cameron

I think it is very appropriate to this discussion and speaks of just what it means to be a critic and just what standards you define as a "great" film. When Titanic first came out the critics bashed it as a shallow love story. Titanic appeared to be a disaster, the most over budget film ever made at that time. Fox thought that they would lose millions even if the film exceeded thier wildest expectations. Critic: “Mr.Cameron, your movie had beautiful visuals and featured a compelling setting with a simple, yet powerful message. However, your characters failed to be anything more than cliché caricatures and the plot felt too familiar, so I had to take points off.” Director: “I’m glad you enjoyed my movie and I understand I made some mistakes with writing the characters. My plot wasn’t very original and I apologize for that as well. These are elements I hope to improve upon in my future projects.” yeah right =p
