Who in the world is Ripley? DID YOU REALLY NOT SEE ALIEN? EVER EVER EVER?! Sorry for retarded caps lock but i am totally SHOCKED. Obviously this guy meant Sigourney Weaver who played Ellen Ripley in Alien movies so for most ppl Weaver = Ripley About Avatar - too long, and i think that if you didn't see the trailer you'd be VERY disappointed by it. I saw trailer and already got in mindset that i will be watching Pocahontas with great special effects so yeah, I went, saw special effects - they were good, not something "omfg soooo awesoem" but good, but got bored b4 movie ended. Plus really if it had at least a little creative plot that would be movie worth recommendation. Otherwise - watch if you want to have some fun with special effects (Unless you didn't see Transformers 2 yet, then give it priority it has a little better plot loool. And cute actress as well ) In short - only good side of this movie = special effects. But what else could anyone expect with this trailer?
The fact that you just touted Transformers 2 over this (or just about any) movie completely invalidates your opinion.

1. How can you possibly think that it was so long when so many people in this thread had said they could watch this for hours? 2. You set your expectations way too high. 3. I dont think you realize how monumental this movie is in terms of CGI..95% of the movie was it and it was very very photorealistic. 4. How can you possibly say that transformers was better AND say Megan Fox is hot.
I dont get how you could be so critical about the creative plot when transformers has been used, reused, and redigested for as long as I can remember. I dont see how you guys can keep criticizing the plot when every story ever told has probably taken aspects and influences from other stories. Poeple seem to just be looking for a reason to bash this movie, I don't get it.

If you're interested, the SF writer community generally thinks the movie was an insult in terms of storytelling. It's kind of just wrong to use the term "creative plot" to describe Avatar. It had painfully bad plotting and characterization. But it did have stellar visuals. Fans should stop trying to defend the plot and stick to the movie's strengths: its visuals.

lol the plot was really good. I LIKED the plot. Its a great story and its message is much more important than any other movie ive seen this year. It was elegant in its simplicity. Now everybody repeat after me
Simple does not equal bad.

Here's a pro tip. Stop watching movies and go read a book. Movies are almost universally shallow and terrible. Comparing its "message," which is a cliche environmentalist plug, to that of other vapid entertainment isn't saying much.
That's not to say there aren't some quality films out there in terms of "message" and plot, they're just not very common. That's why Adam Sandler can put out dozens of films with the same plot and minor detail/setting changes, and audiences don't catch on for 7 years. Or why Steven Seagal had a career at all.

I understand how you feel. You wanted Avatar to be a psycholgical thriller or offer a perspective youd never thought off. Fair enough Avatar wasnt that kind of movie. But it also wasnt meant to be. It was meant to be a simple and timeless message that offers allot more to humanity than a movie like fight club ever could.

lmao. This is Titanic all over again. ("it has no story blah blah"). Its amazing how people don't understand that James Cameron were and will always be based on emotions. Amazing visuals accomplishes this end goal. + Show Spoiler +I was personally emotional with home tree's death. If you were really amazed by the visuals, you will cry too. ... Cry about a fooking tree. a tree for fuck sake!
If you don't feel it, you don't feel it. And that is why this whole "oh it has no story" is so damn pointless. If you don't integrate the emotions in it, then you won't get it.
And it pretty much explains why Titanic and Avatar went on to become wildly successful. It hits in the heart. Not just in the U.S, but also worldwide. Both movies' 2/3 of its total gross is worldwide. And most people around the world watched it in 2D so its not just the visual appeal here.

There is no problem with simple, there is a problem with how Cameron made it simple, do you not realize at any given point in the movie, he fucking spelled out every fucking thing that was going on just in case the viewer didn't understand the inherently simple dialogue and plot in the first place? There wasn't room for any thought because it was like Cameron fed you a meal and told you exactly how it was made and what was in it, etc.

Its funny it almost sounds like your saying "he made the movie easy to understand" like its a bad thing.

Hey this sounds a lot like my 13 year old cousin's justification for loving Twilight! Thanks :D

There are a TON of Disney movies that aren't original stories but they are still amazing movies because of the way they portray it and because of how good of quality it is. Just because a story is unoriginal doesn't make it bad. Especially when there are so many other amazing things going on, like the visuals.
I knew going in that the story was very similar to movies like Pocahontas, I knew the whole way through that it wasn't an original story, but I still loved every minute of it because instead of being elitist about it I just let myself enjoy it, and it was an amazing experience. I am kind of sad that people are so demanding of originality and everything being presented to them on a silver platter anymore, rather than just letting themselves go and enjoying it for what it is. Sure it's great to get your fix of stunning creativity and originality and depth, but just go look for it elsewhere, like a book or a music album. It makes my life a lot more enjoyable, at least, to appreciate things for what they are rather than demanding perfection.
I've seen it twice and would see it many, many more times.
