Yeah and check the airing date. Sometimes something is tagged as prequel because it plays before the original anime but aired after it so it's meant to watch after the original.

At least, Owarimonogatari was captivating even without all the background, felt like a mystery/detective story

They don't know what they're talking about. The series was great.
Granted, if you watched it now, you might think it's average, because you've seen these tropes before. But early when it aired, it was relatively new/interesting thing. It was a pretty fun SoL show with supernatural elements to it.
Season 1 was great, season 2 trolls you, and the movie is the reward for the culmination of all the suffering you've had to endure that was season 2.

Or just read the LNs. The series was fine, the movie was great and the first few LNs were pretty good.

Disappearance is generally rated much higher than the tv series, I personally found the quality of the (anime) franchise fairly consistent throughout but that's just me.
Normally I'd say the series is worth watching but since you already watched Disappearance I wouldn't bother with it anymore.

Season 1 is fairly good, season 2 is fairly bad due to reairing the same episode 8 times in a fucking row, and the Movie is great.
