Plenty of cultures have the same kind of attitude, where an unwed woman over a certain age must have something wrong with her or her family. Japan just gave a nickname to the stigma.

I wouldn't say it's a joke over there. It's just that I never hear it in a serious matter and only hear Elem and me joking about it and stuff like that. I have absolutely no idea how much of a thing it still is (culturally) but I doubt you'd hear the word itself. But I've certainly heard stories that unmarried women = bad is still a thing, maybe not as extreme anymore but let's say with 35year olds or 30year olds... I'm actually pretty sure there was some other expression I read about from someone linking me a rocketnews article for exactly that, women older than 30years, unmarried as well but I can't seem to remember it
google to the rescue:
Thirty years ago, women were labelled Christmas cake if they weren’t married by the age of 25. That age marker, nuanced by the 25th of December, is also the date after which a Christmas cake is considered old and stale, or past its use-by-date (and yes, they do eat Christmas cake in Japan!). While it’s refreshing that this term is no longer used, the nomenclature it has been replaced with is just as distressing: comparing a woman’s marriageable age to Japanese New Year’s noodles. These noodles, called toshikoshi soba, are eaten on December 31, the last day of the year. So the modern woman who is still unmarried at 31 has merely been given a life sentence six years later. And in addition to turning old and stale like Christmas cake, she’ll also, presumably, now become chewy. source: en.rocketnews24.com
wasn't too far off when I said it seems like a super old term noone uses anymore and said it sounds like 90's lol

Strange for a country with massive declining birthrate issue and culture that actively discourages relationships in favour of work. Women got it rough if even in that situation they still insulted lol
edit: I do find it fascinating that no matter how diverse we are as a species the one thing we all are on the same page on is the collective hatred of women.

We have a term like that in denmark too though it refers to both men and women and the age is 30 instead, and it's more of a thing done/said in jest more so than it being a serious thing

I'm pretty sure it is a joke these days. A very popular pop artist in japan(Koda Kumi)one time said in some interview "women over 35 have their amniotic fluids go rotten" or something like that and everyone pretty much hated her for a while for that. So i'm pretty sure no one actually takes the christmas cake thing seriously.
anyways, japanese marriages and childbirth problems have very little to do with any of this.

Not as drastic as rotting, but risk of birth defects increases the older you get.

Tsugumomo is pretty entertaining, Kiriha is pretty good.

It's about to go down in LWA. Fantastic episode. Expect about 2-3 flashbacks before it's over.
|
LWA is heating up very nicely. Moar Ursula pls~
|
Grimoire of Zero had a good first episode. Seems like a fanatsy show I'll enjoy.
|
Zero Kara Hajimeru was ok. I think their witches/mages battles can be interesting
Re:Creators : CRAZYYYYYY. I loved the "Fate/Zero's Lolis Gilgamesh" power The battles were nice, setting was interesting.
Berserk 2017 : Clang
What are you guys watching this season? What shows should I watch?
I'm probably dropping Granblue Fantasy. It looks like a generic show
|
Haughty loli silver witch is not bad.

LWA is so good, I wouldn't mind a whole season of magical hijinks with no main plot.
|
I've been binge watching miss kobayashi's dragon maid and holy shit im surprised how entertaining it is.
|
Solid choice. Now you should move to Bungou Stray Dogs if you haven't.
|
I don't think i'd recommend bungou stray dogs
|
Hmm, the first season wasn't very good so I wouldn't either. But the 2nd one was very nice imo.
|
Thanks, Bungdou stray dogs is certainly on my list - but so are dozen others lol

The biggest problem for marriage is when the woman cannot find a man older or with greater income as far as japanese told me, so if you earn a lot and are above 30 as a woman, your choices diminish harshly. Sometimes those women are called make-inu (loser-dog) but some of them take that proudly as they have a lot of money and refuse to marry the very few candidates avaibable (usually much older or divorced or widowed...)
well im no expert but japanese society can be pretty harsh at times.
