There are a lot of reference to Japanese pop culture and some things that are purely Japanese, but for the most part, it's pretty accessible. The arcs I recommend are, for me, the best at the moment. There are other ones that are good and short, but those will give you the gist of the story that is Gintama.
Yea a lot of the funniest episodes are really just random stand alone episodes lol. The longer arcs are the more action packed while the shorter arcs that are just 1-2 episodes are usually comedy.
But yea the Yoshiwara arcs are nice. Tsukuyo is too good and GinTsu is love ^_^
You could probably get away with watching a few of the key arcs to get like the cliff notes introduction to the major characters/story developments then start watching the current stuff.
Utsuro's VA is like such a great voice for a villain. Such a good job all around by the cast. One of the most impressive things about Gintama is that it can get you from multiple angles. It can make you laugh hard, hit you in the feels, or hype you up. It has it all with a wonderful cast of characters to love or hate.

I agree. Shoyo does make you feel like he's both victim and villain. That's good VA from the two. He looked like he was in pain when he saw his students fighting. Wait until after this fight though. It gets even better.
Man the art in Kaze no Shoujo Emily is so gorgeous. That one guy in the review section on MAL had some nerv to claim that the people behind the art put in no effort...

Which is a big part of depression. It's as if there's this warm fluffy blanket wrapped around this cold center trying to get it to realize it can be warm and fluffy too. Then you get his sister which is just .
I'm just mad weaksauce when it comes to emotional stuff in the last few years.
I'm with you in theory but it's more the way it's implemented that bothers me. It doesn't bother me as much as in Yuri on Ice for example but it's the same kind of comedy that feels forced. As in, it comes all of a sudden, randomly sometimes during moments when it doesn't fit. It's chibi style with silly sound effects. That way it feels like the comedy is just there because the author felt he needed to implement some comedic relief for whatever reason. I would totally be in favour of light-hearted/comedic scenes that are more integrated into the setting to show the contrast you mentioned. Let the sisters have fun and make jokes or do silly things but make it realistic (realistic in context of the show). Make it so it feels like it's the character doing the silly, funny stuff and not some external mask put onto the character for a short time.
As it is now, to me it feels like as I said: The show doesn't want to make the viewer feel unconfortable (for too long) so the author forces in comedic relief regularly instead of adding some realistic comedy when the story asks for it. For example, I always start to cringe when the blond guy with the glasses appears because I know what style of weird comedy scenes are going to come up next. Dunno, but for all the great writing the show has for character development and especially how characters come to realisation of important issues, the writing of the comedy sure feels lazy as fuck.
If we think of it as some written story, which it obviously is, then yeah I'll agree it sometimes feels like out of nowhere. On the other hand I don't really mind the silly teacher etc if I think of it as something just happening. He's that kind of person and if he walks into Rei more likely than not he has no idea about whatever it is we just saw pan out. So him being so out of nowhere feels natural to me in most situations if that makes sense? It's not like everyone around you will be aware of what's going on, so him getting in there, cracking a stupid joke and then after the fact realising that it wasn't the best time for aforementioned stupid joke isn't really an issue for me unless I specifically think of it as fiction and the author being able to control these things.
Again, I can see characters like that teacher being sort of realistic. However, it's, again, the way it's done. Why make those interupting moments even more ridiculous by adding chibi faces, flowers everywhere, silly noises and lalala-singing in the backround? It makes absolutely no fucking sense. Same goes for Numy's comment. Of course people put on masks. But here it's the author/director that puts on a mask on the whole scene. It's like when you are walking down the street and the hand of god reaches down and randomly throws stuff at you while singing lalala with a girl's voice. Actually, I would probably laugh so hard if that ever happened.

I know there are a few (I've seen some 2-3, like the alien bath house episode and the penis-break snowboard one) but I always see people raging about how great gintama is, yet, whenever I try to watch it by myself, or with some friend while half-drunk, the episode always ends up being complete meh. (I've seen like ~15-20 episodes this way over the years)

Except Eris because she pads them
rofl. You guys are being harsh on Aqua. Her rather quirky personality makes konosuba fun to watch compared to Megumin and Darkness who are rather tame at times. Liked this episode as usual. Wonder how they'll finish the next one XD
