Which is a big part of depression. It's as if there's this warm fluffy blanket wrapped around this cold center trying to get it to realize it can be warm and fluffy too. Then you get his sister which is just ![]() ![]() I'm just mad weaksauce when it comes to emotional stuff in the last few years. I'm with you in theory but it's more the way it's implemented that bothers me. It doesn't bother me as much as in Yuri on Ice for example but it's the same kind of comedy that feels forced. As in, it comes all of a sudden, randomly sometimes during moments when it doesn't fit. It's chibi style with silly sound effects. That way it feels like the comedy is just there because the author felt he needed to implement some comedic relief for whatever reason. I would totally be in favour of light-hearted/comedic scenes that are more integrated into the setting to show the contrast you mentioned. Let the sisters have fun and make jokes or do silly things but make it realistic (realistic in context of the show). Make it so it feels like it's the character doing the silly, funny stuff and not some external mask put onto the character for a short time. As it is now, to me it feels like as I said: The show doesn't want to make the viewer feel unconfortable (for too long) so the author forces in comedic relief regularly instead of adding some realistic comedy when the story asks for it. For example, I always start to cringe when the blond guy with the glasses appears because I know what style of weird comedy scenes are going to come up next. Dunno, but for all the great writing the show has for character development and especially how characters come to realisation of important issues, the writing of the comedy sure feels lazy as fuck.

Generally in manga panel size correlates to importance of events. Whenever a dramatic moment occurs there are often a lot of big panels (or even double page spreads) with a lot of detail to them to empathise the intensity of the situation. In some cases the author will try to lighten the mood with a few small 4koma-ish panels afterwards which are pretty effective for that most of the time. Since in anime there's no such thing as panel size those small moments of comedic relief often become overemphasized as a result of that, and vice versa for the dramatic scenes, wich leads to a lot of tonal whiplash. I'm guessing the 3gatsu adaptation must have that problem sometimes. To be fair those types of scenarios are a bitch to adapt properly so I don't really blame the studios for messing them up but they can really ruin key moments of an adaptation sometimes.

I know there are a few (I've seen some 2-3, like the alien bath house episode and the penis-break snowboard one) but I always see people raging about how great gintama is, yet, whenever I try to watch it by myself, or with some friend while half-drunk, the episode always ends up being complete meh. (I've seen like ~15-20 episodes this way over the years)

The Shogun Assassination Arc is one of the best animated fights in Gintama. Although the others I listed will give it a run for it's money. Start with those. Watch every Yoshiwara -related arc, because of best girl.

I've read on multiple occasions that many Gintama fans say the first episodes up to 19-20 are pretty meh. If you get past those, it gets way better. It's definitely one of those shows that has lots of filler episodes, but if you like the characters and the comedy, you'll like those too. If you just wan't to watch the arcs, all of em are listed here. http://gintama.wikia.com/wiki/Story_Arcs

One of the funniest episodes for me is just a filler episode between arcs (ep. 153). It's hard to sell a show that has over 300 episodes to watch, so check it out and make your own decision. With my short experience with anime thus far, it's easily one of the best shows i've watched.

I didn't intentionally stop, more like I just didn't have any motivation to keep watching so it just wan't on my mind.

If we think of it as some written story, which it obviously is, then yeah I'll agree it sometimes feels like out of nowhere. On the other hand I don't really mind the silly teacher etc if I think of it as something just happening. He's that kind of person and if he walks into Rei more likely than not he has no idea about whatever it is we just saw pan out. So him being so out of nowhere feels natural to me in most situations if that makes sense? It's not like everyone around you will be aware of what's going on, so him getting in there, cracking a stupid joke and then after the fact realising that it wasn't the best time for aforementioned stupid joke isn't really an issue for me unless I specifically think of it as fiction and the author being able to control these things.
