If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.ggFor currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net |

NGNL I loved but I really wouldn't put it on a rec list (though a point in its favor I guess would be that it seems to be popular with a lot of people)
If we're going to be using popularity as a factor to begin with, i really don't see why we're bringing it up . If popularity wasn't a factor to begin with, i can already think of a few shows on the chart to slash off.

There is a difference between what is popular with the larger population and what this small TLADT community thinks of anime. So while yes popularity might come into consideration for categories like mainstream, the rec chart is what this community would recommend and there isn't many here who would rate NGNL that highly or even think it is anything beyond a pretty trashy show.

Just for the record, if NGNL was added it would most definitely go under mainstream.

Personally, I'd argue for Kekkai Sensen over Jormungand.
I'd also argue for UBW over F/Z.
Garo was also pretty damn good, but I don't know if it was good enough to warrant a spot on the list (and where would it go?).
Barakamon could be fit into slice of life I guess.
Nothing else recent really comes to mind, considering Rolling Girls and Kyousogiga both kinda shit the bed in the end.

omg how could i forget this one
please put oregairu in drama or comedy. whichever

...I'm all for Slaughter's idea. Shigatsu would fit into the trashy show category.

I like the idea.

As much as I liked Rolling Girls, I don't really think it should make the list. Then again, I don't really have an idea about SoL, so yeah...
Anyways, I checked out what I watched from 2014 until now and it seems like Nozaki-kun for comedy is the only thing I can really vouch for.

Shigatsu would fit into mainstream as well. Same as NGNL. Both aren't good enough to warrant a mention though.
Nanatsu no Taizai - After HxH prob the best Shounen in recent years. Akatsuki no Yona - Fantasy/Drama/Coming of Age SYD - Comedy, think it should be there instead of Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita which should be under sci-fi to me. Second season when? :<
Don't really think anything warrants taking over a slot though. Nothing has been that great. Saki is glorious, stfu Kip!

Chiyo-chan is too cute. ;;

Garo was really good, yeah Would probably primarily go into action which is super occupied though, it's also a fantasy/super natural show though

I watched Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun a few months ago and I forget a lot of it already. Probably should rewatch it.

My thoughts on the chart.
Mainstream: shouldn't be a section, but whatever, seems like we're set on that. Katanagatari: is it even in the chart? I remember not seeing it and dismissing the rec chart instantly because of that :D. Girls und panzer: in "Sports"? In the chart? Replace it with Haikyuu and Ping Pong. Usagi Drop: would move in Slice of Life, it's not much of a drama show. Mouretsu Pirates: probably there because we have a "space opera" section to fill, but I'm really surprised to see that show on the chart (because again, no Katanagatari ;D). Honestly I would be a bit disappointed if I watched something like Mouretsu Pirates on the basis of it being on TL's chart.
I would add somewhere: Saint Seiya: Hades (this one), Phantom Requiem of the Phantom (if not already there), Kaichou wa maid-sama, but I wouldn't be mad if they weren't there ;D. Katanagatari though...
Objectively it's a decent chart, but as I think you can't really mess up a recommendation chart, it is still surprisingly lacking. I know I'm not really an "active" member of the thread, so I'm just voicing my humble opinion to spark some discussion if others share it. There are a couple of shows in it that we could do without (not because they're not interesting, just because they're not of a sufficient quality that I would recommend them to someone coming in an anime thread for the first time).

The whole point of "mainstream" was, "you know those guys who get in here who have watched nothing but Naturo and Shaman King? We need a category for those guys and that's mainstream!" or something along the lines of that. That's part of the reason why stuff like fairy tail and SAO made the list because despite most of us not liking it, it's actually a decent recommendation for new guys most of the times. Also the reason why I was angry about Madoka being on Mainstream rather than Drama, because it does somewhat imply "it's actually really bad but it's famous!" the way we set it up/ talked about it imo.
That being said, NGNL totally deservers a spot on Mainstream the way ya'll shitting on it and how famous it is if that's what we're going for.
|
There are plenty of good shows on the mainstream list, not just madoka.

yeah I know. iirc Sent was mad about something else being on Mainstream for the same reason because it ends up being in the same list as SAO, Attack on Titan and Fairy Tail, which were included for being famous. It's just that hose few bad ones do stand out.
